I think it was because she was the National Teacher of the Year, selected from all of the other teachers of the year.

While I think it's great that a teacher should be so honoured, rumours I heard onboard suggest that it was more cynical than this. Apparently, a number of other, more typical, "celebrity" people were approached first. Unfortunately, none of them could fit the 7 May naming ceremony into their schedules. So RCI was left scrabbling around trying to find someone - and then hit on the idea of the teacher of the year.

Ah, probably because it was from this year. Nothing more than a representative of all of the other winners who just happened to win this year. They had to pick some one, some how.

But here's to all past winners and every teacher out there who wasn't even nominated. I'm sure he/she is teacher of the year to someone. icon_cool.gif

Why mar a special recognition with rumors, even if they are true? I think its a great idea!

Whatever the motivation, it's a wonderful choice in the end.

Darn! I knew I retired too early! icon_wink.gif What a wonderful honor to bestow upon a teacher. After spending years in the "trenches of education" I can honestly say she deserves it. So little recognition is given to the teaching profession, but everyone needs to remember that without teachers there would be no doctors, engineers, scientists and so on. Kudos RCI for picking a teacher as Godmother! icon_biggrin.gif

This is a good example of why you shouldn't listen to rumors onboard. The date of the naming ceremony has been set for months, and if it was a case of just finding someone - anyone - after a few turndowns, that could have been settled a long time ago by just picking anyone. Although these days it's not unusual for a cruise line to be turned down by a potential godmother, because many/most consider it a business arrangment rather than an honor.

As we reported in CND yesterday, the reason for the late announcement in this case was the timing of the announcement of the Teacher of the Year. The annoucement wasn't made until April 21 by the White House, and there was no way Royal Caribbean could get any information about the person selected until that date. They didn't want to announce that the godmother would be the Teacher of the Year prior to that in case (a) the person selected was a man, and (b) the teacher selected declined the request to serve as godmother. (If either of those turned out to be the case, then you would have seen some scrambling, although I'm sure Royal Caribbean had a Plan B in mind.) Consequently, they had to wait until the announcement by the White House to approach her (and know who to approach) and then had to wait until she made sure she could arrange her schedule to work with the May 7 date. (It is a school day, you know.) It all just came together late last week.

This is wonderful!

Regardless of how RCI came to make this decision, it was the right decision. In general, teachers do not get the respect & pay that they deserve; nor do they get the proper support & resources from their respective communities. This is a step in the right direction towards honoring the true heroes of this world. I've always thought that great teachers should be lauded as passionately as great athletes, great musicians and great actors. Good choice Royal Caribbean!

Sincere congratulations to Ms. Mellor and all the noble professionals she represents.

Except in Greece (where men do christen ships), crew members consider it bad luck. As superstitious as many are, they probably couldn't even get them to board the ship.

That's exactly how you can tell this wasn't an afterthought. Royal Caribbean has had all of them, and a teacher fits right in with the other inspirational godmothers.

But I don't agree about not listening to rumours on board. Some stuff that is talked about on ships is deadly accurate, long before it is officially made public by the cruise line. Like all high profile organisations, they are always trying to control the image they present to the public.
