port time help please!!!

OK, Carnival says we are in GC from 9a-6p. GC port authority says we are scheduled from 7:30a to 4p (local time??).

 

Assuming port authority is on island time, the time would still be off (8:30-5). It doesn't sound like a lot, but it does make a difference in my excursion...I think-- I'm starting to confuse myself :(

 

Just for reference, the excursion I want to do has a check in time of 8:45a and returns @ 2:30p local time. Will I make it back to the boat??

How are you scheduling your excursions? I couldn't do mine online.......I have the ones I want picked out but not sure of the times so not sure of the other options I would have

I'm going independent w/ companies recommended either here or on trip advisor. I already have Mark booked for Jamaica, now I'm trying to book Capt Marvin for GC.

 

One good thing about booking w/ the ship is you don't have to worry about stuff like this.

Ship time is usually the same as the time zone in their departure port, i.e. if you sail from Florida the ship would stay on Eastern Time Zone, in the summer it's Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

 

Grand Cayman is in the Eastern Time Zone, BUT DOES NOT use Daylight Savings Time. So in the summer when U.S. is in Daylight Savings Time, Grand Cayman time is the same as Central Daylight Savings Time (one hour behind Florida). If it gets hard to figure out, remember they didn't "Spring Forward" with the U.S.

You didn't mention what cruise ship/line you are using, but as indicated, most ships stay on their home port time (but not all). I used the Meeting Planner at dataandtime.com to figure out the time difference in our ports. Just put in the ship home port and the various ports that you will be visiting, along with the date that you will be there and it will show you the time difference for all of the ports.

When we were in GC in mid April on Carnival Valor the Valor stayed on EDT, since GC doesn't observe DST the time difference was two hours. We docked at 8:00 ship time which was 6:00 local time.

 

BTW, your tour company knows when the ship arrives and leaves, so if you are concerned ask them to show you ship time and local time. Sharon at Native Way was very patient with me and helped me understand the difference.

 

Oh yeah... Once you are there, keep your watch on ship time so you don't get confused.

1st day you could get off at 8 a.m and had to be back by 6

2nd day you could get off at 8 a.m and had to be back by 2

 

We had a great time, wish we could have done something besides the cayman islands. A lot of ships like 6 were there the first day and only 2 were there the 2nd day, we were the only one there both days

You will get in GC very early= I believe it is 2 hours difference. The stores were not even open when we arrived.

Just got off the Inspiration on Thursday. We spent 2 days in the Caymans & loved it. On the 1st day the last tender left @ 5pm & the ship sailed out @ 6. We were told that the ship had to go back out 12 miles so that they could open up the casinos, etc. The 2nd day the last tender was at 2pm. (All on ship time which was 1 hr ahead of Cayman time).

 

We heard one couple just rented a hotel room instead of returning to the ship that night so they could enjoy the nightlife I guess. Only thing with that is you run the risk of the water becoming too rough for the tenders. I just thought I'd pass it along. Not sure I'd do it. :eek:

I emailed Captain Marvin's and told them what I wanted to do and which ship I would be coming in on. Ruth, from Capt. Marvin wrote me back quickly (I sent the email late at night and had an answer the next morning) she told me which tours and times to book so that we would be back in time. I was confusing myself with the times too. Also she knew the tender times which I didn't have either.
