sail7seas Posted May 8, 2009 #4 Share Posted May 8, 2009 We were on Eurodam for two weeks in March and I don't think I saw any smoking permitted anywhere at Lido Pool/bar including the cabanas. So far as I know, there was no smoking permitted under the dome.

Himself Posted May 9, 2009 #8 Share Posted May 9, 2009 Why not quit smoking. If I can do it, anyone can. I used to be a two and a half pack a day smoker and smoked pretty much from November, 1956 until June 8, 1992. I will be off seventeen years next month and have never regretted quitting. I feel better also.
sail7seas Posted May 9, 2009 #9 Share Posted May 9, 2009 Unless they've stopped it there is smoking allowed under the dome on the side of the ship that allows smoking. With rare exceptions here and there, no smoking any area at Lido Pool, the tables outside Lido or at the bar. They stopped permitting it about for about 2 or so years ago. Maybe longer.... sandypaper Posted May 9, 2009 #10 Share Posted May 9, 2009 Does that apply to the Volendam also? Do you know what bars allow smoking on that ship?
sail7seas Posted May 9, 2009 #11 Share Posted May 9, 2009 No smoking under the retractable roof at Lido Pool applies fleetwide. Crows Nest on Volendam permits smoking (Eurodam does not). You can smoke in Casino Bar but Ocean Bar just went smoke free a few months ago, fleetwide. No smoking in Explorer's Lounge either.

suse Posted May 9, 2009 #13 Share Posted May 9, 2009 A smoking thread! I agree with the others; no smoking under the dome. I'm glad I don't smoke but understand it must get harder and harder to be one. I'm not one to sigh and cough when around smokers since I still have friends ( a few ) who smoke and I love them, but I wish they weren't so tied down with this habit. So be it. swedish weave Posted May 9, 2009 #16 Share Posted May 9, 2009 I do so love the smoking threads and the tray threads. It's so fun and never gets tiresome:D:D:D Enjoy it while you can. Our last HAL trip in April we got a questionaire about whether we would continue to cruise with them if smoking were not allowed. It appears they are trying to get some numbers together to see what impact a ban would have on their business.
suse Posted May 9, 2009 #17 Share Posted May 9, 2009 You know it's such a controversial subject. In our town, when the bans went into effect, it was all doom and gloom:(, but, seriously, all the bars and restaurants seem to be very busy in spite of the smoking ban. It is legal, people still do it, and I find myself a little bit of a libertarian about it all. Of course, there are people who do get sick from it so there needs to be a sensitvity to their needs. It seems to be a habit that is a major hassle. Finding a hotel that allows it must be difficult unless you don't mind staying in a fleabag motel. Island Tripper Posted May 10, 2009 Author #18 Share Posted May 10, 2009 I find myself a considerate smoker. No litter, no blowing smoke in a non smoker's space etc...(none of my friends smoke) but if I am going to spend extra money on a cruise I want to be in a place where I can if I so choose. I like the idea of my own "space". Like I said..don't want to ignite a flame...
kryos Posted May 10, 2009 #19 Share Posted May 10, 2009 Enjoy it while you can. Our last HAL trip in April we got a questionaire about whether we would continue to cruise with them if smoking were not allowed. It appears they are trying to get some numbers together to see what impact a ban would have on their business.I can't imagine you'll ever see HAL go entirely smoke-free. It's just not going to happen. I think what you are seeing, however, is more restrictive smoking practices with each passing year. Of course, if things get too restrictive, guess I'll be looking for another cruise line. Carnival has pretty smoker-friendly policies as I seem to recall. But for now, I can deal with the changes, if not be entirely happy with them, and as long as I can light up in one or two public areas and in the privacy of my cabin, then I can live with it. But take those things away and I think more and more smokers will start jumping ship from HAL. And, yes, other people say that jumping ship wouldn't do smokers any good because chances are all cruise ships would have tight smoking policies in effect by then. Well, maybe that's true ... but don't forget, there are other vacation options besides cruising, right? Blue skies ... --rita
Cruising Carol Posted May 10, 2009 #20 Share Posted May 10, 2009 Just off the Westerdam. Not a smoker and rarely smell smoke around home and town, so very sensitive to the smell. The only places that smelled of smoke (really stinky!) were the casino and Sports Bar. We had a balcony -- never smelled any smoke. There was a place on the 10th deck just outside the hallway to Crows Nest that had ash trays. People were smoking there -- and there was no smell of smoke. Fresh air took care of it. No smoking in Crow's Nest, Exploration Cafe or around pool on Lido Deck. Didn't go to deck aft of Lido so don't know about that area.
SeaBlueSkies Posted May 15, 2009 #21 Share Posted May 15, 2009 Why not quit smoking. If I can do it, anyone can. I used to be a two and a half pack a day smoker and smoked pretty much from November, 1956 until June 8, 1992. I will be off seventeen years next month and have never regretted quitting. I feel better also. Nah, I've already quit drinking. One thing at a time. I smoke about 4 ciggies a day and that satisfies me. When I'm ready to quit, I will, as most people do. I did order an electronic "cigarette" called "NJoy" that has nicotine in full flavor, regular or lite flavor and non-nicotine. It glows like a cigarette does, and there is a vapor that is inhaled and exhaled that looks like smoke, but isn't because there IS no smoke in it. It can also be "smoked" in ANY area where there is NO SMOKING, because it is NOT tobacco. I'm going to try it out and see how it works. If I'm happy with it then I can "smoke" when and where I want to and people who abhor "smokers and smoking tobacco" will be happy as well. I think smokers are STILL permitted to use fake cigarettes that are not harmful or smelly to anyone else. So...I will be a happy camper. We all have our vices, I suppose and I allow other people to enjoy their vices and I will enjoy, er "NJOY" mine anywhere anytime I wish. That's a win-win situation, in my opinion.:D I can satisfy my smoking desire with some harmless vapors and the drinkers can kill their livers with booze. To each his own, right?;)

m steve Posted May 15, 2009 #23 Share Posted May 15, 2009 Printing out all the rules for every line. I guess it must be your obsession. Why can't people just let the few smokers onboard enjoy what little space is left for them. They have already lost the great space in the Ocean Bar. I bet the bartender tips have dropped a lot. Next you can post all the rules regarding brining wine and liquor on board.
