Brazilian festival for MSC Cruises

8/5/2009

As it prepares for its longest season to date, MSC Cruises’ Brazilian arm expects to handle around 330,000 passengers in 2009/10, an increase of more than 50% from the 193,000 carried during the 2008/09 season, just finished, reports MSC Cruzeiros. Whilst the bulk of passengers will be locally sourced, approximately 54,000 will comprise international cruisers.

MSC is increasing its capacity in South America next season with six ships going transatlantic to the continent compared to four in 2008/09. MSC Lirica will be the first to arrive at Recife on October 19 (instead of November) and will cruise through to March before returning to the Med.

Arriving in November will be MSC’s Opera, Musica, Melody and Armonia with Orchestra arriving in mid-December. The last departure of the season will be MSC Opera, which leaves Santos on May 3, 2010, on a 19-day voyage back to Dover.

According to MSC Cruzeiros, port fees and passenger shoreside spending will generate some Reais90m ($41.9m) in extra revenue for the port of Santos, a major turn-around port for the line, and for the state of Sao Paulo.

MSC Melody will operate a series of eight-day Brazil cruises round-trip from Salvador de Bahia calling Maceio, Recife, Fortaleza and Cabedelo from December to March. To cater for this operation the Italian line has opened up a new office in Salvador, in northeast Brazil.

MSC now employs more than 1,000 people directly in the country, and has expanded rapidly over the past three years as local cruise business has boomed on the back of a strong Real.

thanks Jack. You'll be pleased to know that I finally got around to making a start on it yesterday. Hope to finish it later today. If I don't I'll post the first part on these boards and the rest in instalments!
