packing query

I'm going on a cruise tour 6-28-09 and have 2 questions-

1. If I cram all my carry-on stuff in a backpack will it fit under my seat on the plane and the train?

2. Can I just take a dressy skirt and top for formal nights or do I need the glitz I usually take to warmer cruises?

Hi. We went on a 15 day cruisetour last August. I took a normal carry-on bag and had no trouble with it fitting everywhere it needed to fit. The formal evenings on the Alaskan cruises don't seem as fancy. I usually wear long gowns or sequins on Caribbean cruises. On the Coral Princess my husband wore a dark suit 2 nights and I wore knee-length dresses- the kind you wear at home when you go to a nicer restaurant. On the other nights you could wear casual slacks or even jeans. ;)
