Craps Players Step Inside!

I think the rating issue is that what are the chances you'll be back on a cruise anytime soon? I've seen them comp some drinks to the high rollers.

On our past Christmas cruise the dealers started calling me "Silent Night" since I play pretty seriously and don't hoot and holler, even after rolling for 30 minutes.

What do you think is the best cruise line for craps players? I would be leaving out of Florida port.

My experience lately is with Carnival and Royal. Both only allow single odds with maybe one evening with double odds. The dealers on my last Royal cruise were not very good. Carnival also had one night with $3 table minimums. On one Holland America cruise, my DW and I were often the only craps players. I threw dice one evening for two hours by myself. So, no more HAL for us.

In my opinion, the best craps dealers come from England or Australia.

Carnival, and Carnival owned cruise lines allow double odds.

NCL allows 3x4x5x odds. That is 3x odds on the four and ten, 4x odds on the five and nine, and 5x odds on the six and eight. It gets confusing, but that is the best odds I have seen on cruise lines.

NCL will give high rollers better perks, once you have have established history with them.

The funny thing is, craps is not a big game in either of those countries, IMHO the best dealers for craps are Americans, but you never see them on ships, the dealers from the UK are trained in a totally different manner than the dealers in the US so that may have a lot to do with it.

When I was learning to deal (in the UK) just to get through the roulette part was 6 weeks, BJ a week and craps another 6 weeks, in the US it's more like a month for the whole lot.

So what you end up with is a dealer (from the UK) who has chosen dealing as a profession and for the most part takes a little pride in how the game is dealt.

Again my observations :p

Oh and Merry Christmas to all

We bumped into some of the UK dealers we became friendly with on the ship gambling at the casinos in St. Maarten. You'd think they'd know better than to gamble.:)

On subsequent cruises, some of the UK dealers even remembered us and asked how we were. Dealers from the other countries were never very friendly. Let's have some fun while I'm fighting with the house.

Btyko....Regarding the 3X4x5X odds game, IF you take MAX odds the payoff is 7X your front line regardless of what the point is..makes it a little easier to make sure you are paid correctly.

Yes, the payoff is always the same, seven times the flat bet, if you take maximum odds. You just have to be careful that you put up the correct odds bet. Since I bet progressively, I have to always be thinking, but since I am an accountant it is not that difficult for me.

Interesting that most Las Vegas casinos have 3x4x5 odds games. The best place to play is @ a little dump on the Strip named Casino Royale....$3 min bet with 100X odds....no vig due on the buy 4 & 10 until it hits....can't find a better game anywhere.

That was always my favorite place. I seem to recall years ago that at times during the day they had roulette for $0.25?

I absolutely adore craps. I'm mostly play with the "light" but have been known to play the don't on occasion! I generally max my pass line odds and place the 6 & 8.

After my last cruise on the Eurodam (12/12/09), I am thinking about modifying my strategy.

I miss my early cruising days from the 90's on Carnival where they sometimes had *2* craps tables. I haven't seen that in years. And back then, I was still in my research/learning phase (I read a few books and watched several hours of live play before I placed my first bet).

On our past cruises on Zuiderdam and Westerdam there were very few craps players. How was your experience on the Eurodam? I expected there to be lots of craps players among the older cruisers, but I guess they all went to bed at 9:00. So we will not be going on HAL for the foreseeable future.

I used to play PASS and two COME but lately I've dropped the COME since they get taken out too often with the random throwers. So now I'm PASS and place numbers.

Sounds like a recipe for becoming a full time wrong better from now on. Oh wait, you are bi and swing the bat both ways cuz you don't know which team to play for. Hahaha

You are correct, I may go bi  so I can be on the winning side depending on circumstances. I have been tempted lately to go dark, but with a change in my betting strategy and control of the dice, I'm still winning on the right side for now. My concern is the unqualified dealers I've met lately on cruise ships being able to handle dark siders when they have trouble with right siders. I don't like having to argue payouts with them and have to watch them like a hawk. They are often too quick to clear the table after a 7 when I have a COME bet pending and they grab everything. That's why I think it's good to always bet the same way so they get to know your pattern.

The Eurodam this past cruise, the craps table was up and down. At least 3 or 4 nights, the table was packed while I was there. Talking to other players, I missed at least 3 or 4 big rolls, so there was definitely action. In Dec 2008, craps was much more lively.

Also, on the Eurodam, they didn't open the crap table until 9 pm.

I'm here. Pass line, odds and 2 come bets is all I play.:) I never vary from that strategy. Occasionally I'll spread $4 on the hardways for the dealers. My DW also plays if no one is at her favorite "Let it Ride" table.

I'm a dice setter and often get challenged by the stick man for throwing the dice too high in an arc trying for that single roll at the backboard.

You have learned how to play craps the right way:D. I play in Vegas as well as on the cruise ships and I have very good luck at the tables playing the Pass Line/ Come Bet and the Odds that go alonge with them. I may play one hard way (if the point is a 4-6-8-10:cool:.

Hey! Piemom9397 here. I adore craps. I won't say I'm a newbie, because I've been playing it since Vegas in 2006 (went from slots to 3 card poker to BJ to craps in the course of 4 visits to Vegas) but I do have to say that I couldn't tell you the odds and how much payout I'm going to get if I do a come or place bet. I just love playing and have found that the dealers have always taken care of me wherever I go. :D I never played the $5 tables until cruising--the first night on Voyager of the Seas, DH & I won $450! And I've been hooked ever since.

I have a quirky thing I do with the field--if a number on the field has rolled 3 times, I'll place a bet on it. I'd say that has worked for me 8 times out of 10. If the point is a 2, 4, 6 or 8, I'll do that number the hard ways. Ever so often I'll place a C & E bet but that's about it.

I'm glad I stumbled upon this thread--love it!!

Piemom.....There is an old saying in craps about field bets...."the farmer got buried in the field". The "No-Field" 5-6-7-8 numbers give the house a 5+% advantage....much too high. Good Luck.

LSTEFFA, thanks for the info. I have to admit that it's difficult not playing it because it has worked, but I'd rather keep my $ than give it to the house.

Question: is it better to place a come bet than a place bet on a 6 or 8?

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO piemom9397: A Come bet gives the House a 1.43% advantage. If you take odds the House advantage falls to .80%. The Place bet on the six and eight gives the House about a 1.5% advantage. The advantage with the Place bet is you can call off the bet if it doesn't hit. The Come bet is a contract bet and cannot be taken off. The odds can be called off at any time.

The advantage of the come bet is the payout on the ODDS bet are true 6 to 5 with EVEN money being paid on the original come bet. The disadvantage is that the come has to be hit TWICE to be paid. Try placing the six and/or eight with a come bet...if either hit you will be paid 7 to 6 for the place bet which will replaced by the come bet. Simply tell the dealer "down with odds". Always place the 6 and/or 8 in 6 dollar increments (6-12-18-etc) to take advantage of the 7 to 6 place bet payoff. Good Luck
