Rare pierces Posted June 5, 2009 #2 Share Posted June 5, 2009 Hi, is it advisable to have a filter for a DSLR (Nikon) in Alaska? Will it help w/photos of sea, glaciers and from airplanes? Thanks Polarizer on a sunny sea - yes Polarizer on a cloudy sea with bright cloud cover - yes Polarizer on a cloudy sea with heavy overcast - no Polarizer for sunny day scenery - yes Polarizer for rainy day scenery - yes, if bright enough. it will bring out color from wet, shiny foliage. Polarizer for sunny glaciers - absolutely Polarizer for glaciers with bright cloud cover - yes, cuts haze and general glare Polarizer for glaciers with heavy cloud cover - maybe, try and see what it does to the deeper blue parts. Polarizer from airplane with plastic windows (most planes) - NO! Plastic partially polarizes light and will give odd color banding. Open window helicopter or a plane with optical glass windows designed for photography is OK (some sightseeing planes - ask if you're not sure). In any situation be aware that a polarizer can cut available light by 1½ to 2 stops and will slow down your shutter speed considerably. This is why i list "maybe" or "no" with a heavy overcast above. My 2¢... Enjoy your trip! Dave
