Weather in the Med in October

Hi All:

I wonder if I can ask a question in regard to weather in the Med in October. We are booked on the Regatta in an aft cabin 7121 for the October 12/2010 Venice to Athens. We chose this cruise because of the itinerary, which is not offered earlier.

What has been the experience of previous cruisers at that time? This is also our first Oceania cruise. We cruised early September with RCI and the weather was beautiful and the seas were very co-operative. We were also in an aft cabin. (Although it was Barcelona to Barcelona and the ship was larger.)

You can check on

Just choose the City and there is a history section so you can check dates in previous years.

Generally the furtherSouth you are, the better the weather is likely to be. We often fly to Marbella in Spain in October and the temperatures are in the 70's. Italy can be cooler but Venice is ALWAYS worth visiting.

We've done two Oceania Med cruises in October. There was only one rough night--it makes you a bit nervous when you start seeing seasickness bags throughout the ship.

The weather varied--there were days when we wore shorts, short sleeved shirts, and sandals, and other days when we wore long pants, long sleeved shirts, micro fleece, rain jacket, shoes & socks.

When we were aboard the Nautica, from Venice to Athens last October, the only problem was high winds crossing from the Adriatic to the Agean. Otherwise it was nice enough.

Canadian Snowbird: Since you will be on the exact itinerary, perhaps you will like to read our report http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=869685&highlight=meow It should contain most things you need to know, including weather. Hope this helps!

We did Venice to Barcelona, starting Oct 2, 2007 for 14 days.

One night in south of Italy there was a thunderstorm at 0200, and the port(Sorrento/Capri) had obviously had a lot of rain and it was dull when we docked at 0800. However the sun came out quickly, and it was perfect.

The rest of the cruise was sunny and warm, capri pant/Tshirt weather.

As a matter of fact, we were in Venice for 3 nights before the cruise, and in London and Paris for 3 nights each after the cruise, and that was the only rain we had in the 3.5 total weeks of our trip!

We never needed a jacket till we were in London and Paris, and there we wished we had mitts in the early AM and late PM!

Thanks so much for the replies, I did read the review by Meow and found the information very good which I copied.

Meow, what did the cats like about your hotel (Duodo Palace) and was it convenient to getting to the ship? Did you take the transfers offered by Oceania?

October 17, 2007, we were on the Athens to Venice ten-day cruise. The weather was great for the most part, particularly the Greek islands, Turkey, Croatia, and Montenegro. Mostly sunny days, with cooler temps at night as we headed north and away from Greece. We brought along sweaters and light jackets, and that was all we needed on the coolest of days, until we reached Venice, where it was quite chilly and rainy for the first day (we stayed on in Venice afterwards for a few more days).

We did have some rough weather in the Adriatic - very windy and high swells - for a full day at sea. Lots of people were feeling the effects of the weather.

We loved the Oceania experience - I think you are going to have a wonderful time - enjoy!

You are most welcome to read our report, glad to be of help.

It cost us 90 euros by water taxi from the Duodo Palace to the ship, that was the most convenient way, particularly with luggage. The reason we chose that hotel was its direct access to a branch canal and therefore water taxi, which could stop at its back door. Otherwise, hotels without such access could be cheaper.

The Duodo Palace is a small hotel without much facilities other than included buffet breakfast. They charged us 216 euros including breakfast and taxes per day when we were there. It is about five hundred steps from San Marco Square, where all the shops and restaurants are. If you want hotels with even better location and facilities, try the Hotel Bauer or Hotel Baglioni (?), but be prepared to pay 350 euros per night.

You may also like to look at hotels in Athens. The Electra Hotel is quite nice, at 160 euros per day including breakfast and taxes. It is right at the centre of the walking shopping street, with everything around. The city tour trolly actually starts and stops at this hotel. On the other hand, if you want something upscale, try the Grande Britagne, which is in the high fashion new city centre, also with everything right around, but be prepared to pay twice as much!

P.S. We did not take Oceania's transfers, because we did pre-/post- cruise on our own.
