Shipboard Credit for Stock Owners

To all:

In my dealings with RCL on this topic, I was told that they are trying to rebuild how they offer this credit to allow for easier application for and notification of approval an posting through some web-site or email notifications. Guess we will see what they eventually come up with.

Besides stock holder benefit, I also have the CC and will use 15,000 points for a $150.00 discount on the cabin and depending on what points I have left, may get coupons for shipboard credits. By charging the RCCL cruises to that card, I get double points and will use that card for seapass so I get double points on all purchases.
Need to work all the angles these days.

15,000 points for $150 seems like a lot unless you earn multiple points for purchases. I used my MBNA card for $500 off for 500 points. Found that using 100 points only gave me app. 1 upgrade sometimes not worth $100. Will look into RCCL MBNA card.

15,000 <-> $150 is essentially a 1% rebate. I think I'll stick with Discover, since I can use the 'cash back' for anything. They do a double cash back bonus on cruise bookings, but you have to use a designated TA and I don't know how they do in terms of service or prices.

Frank, thanks for the info. I think when you said "online" above we were thinking it might be something different.

Sheila, thanks too. It would be nice if RCCL could enter the 1990s and do simple email/snail mail confirmations of credits and other things. I bet they'd save a small fortune (over time) since people would stop calling the support desk to ask for confirmations. (I'd send them a email explaining that, but I'd almost certainly get a form letter back... lord knows they are good with form letters! [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif[/img]) Still, nice to know they understand and accept the privacy issue regarding the submission of brokerage statements.

Mike, first of all, I second everything that Sheila said. (not that anyone would doubt Sheila [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif[/img])

RCI took my VERY blacked-out statement with no problem. (I had the exact reaction that you did; that they CERTAINLY didn't need to know what other holdings I had! - or my account number!)

They allow you to apply via snail mail, fax or email, though I don't see how they can receive your proof of ownership via email....

The language on the new offer (extension of the old offer) is much more specific about eligibility.

Good luck - it's a bit nerve-wracking not having written confirmation about the credit, but it was there by the end of the second day of our cruise.

I am on the MOS 23 may 04. If I purchase 100 shares of stock tomorrow morning could I get the $100 credit or is it too late because I did not own the shares before May 1st? Anyone know?

It would be nice to receive a confirmation of the credit after sending in the information.
I brought a copy of the information with be on the cruise just in case...
Upon viewing my account onboard I saw no credit. I checked with the pursers office and was informed that they were not posted until about the 3rd day of the cruise. It was posted and everything was fine.

Since they are making this offer to encourage us to invest in RCI it would make sense for them to make it and as simple and carefree as possible.

I have another trip booked in October and assume it will work out fine.

So, you have to buy 100 shares in order to qualify for the credit of $100 on a 7 day cruise.

If I buy thru Charles Schwab, this will cost me $30 to execute the purchase. Then, when I am ready to sell, it will cost another $30. So I need to spend $60 to get a $100 credit, AND bear the risk of market dynamics in the travel industry.

Now if I were in the market for a travel industry stock, and had done my homework, determining that RCI was a good place to put my $$, then this is a great offer for me. Otherwise, be careful about buying stock only to get the credit, as it will likely not be worth it.

Cmason, I totally agree with what you say. When I purchased my stock, it was at an all time high of $24 a share and my husband, a stock guru for our family advised against it. I have not regreted my purchase and now asked my husband why he didn't buy any for our joint account when I did for my IRA. Since I can't touch this for another two years and am getting quarterly dividends from this purchase plus the credits, for right now it is still a hold.

I however, will watch it closely, since today it has dropped a bit more, and if it ever comes to the point that it is not profitable, I will then sell it, but i have also factored in the Schwab commission of $60 to the equation.

You are right of course not to buy a stock just for the credit. But in my eyes it was a good choice.
Although it´s now almost down to the price I bought it (just bought it this year and dropped the las days very much [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif[/img] ) it´s still a win for me so far. I bought it at a very good exchange rate from Euro to USD. As the Dollar gets stronger now it´s good for me.
I´m still making a win of it.
And concerning the credit I´m getting 400 USD out of it this year and that makes it worth for sure. But it´s a sensitive topic and everybody has to diced for himself as it may cost you lots of Dollars to invest in stocks.

Concerning the confirmation, I sent them some emails asking for confirmation and of course got nothing but then I decided to send them a fax to ask for confirmation and I got finally an email back confirming the credit. I´ll take this with me on the cruise. Just in case.

My broker offers electronic statements, which could be copied into Word or some other electronic format. The benefit would be that the private deals could be cleared with absolute security (and without costing RCL $2 is fax machine ink! [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif[/img]). I would still print that out and fax it, rather than send it plain text over the Internet.

I didn't see any date restrictions on the posting above. However, unless you can generate a brokerage statement on demand, you may not have the approproate proof. Also, as cmason points out, it may or may not be worth it in terms of commisions and risk: the stock dropped over $1 a share this morning. It will come back, of course, suince there was no good reason, but it may take a couple of weeks.

You make a good point. Still for someone is a different situation ($5 commision each way and $250 credit for a long cruise), the "profit" might be well worth the risk. In theory they only would have to hold the stock for 1 day, though I would personally consider that to be dishonest.

You are assuming the credit you get will be only once. If you cruise often before they stop offering the credit, you may be correct to invest solely for the credit. We plan to use it a few times, so even thought the shares have declined, it was still a viable investment and possible return.

I just got my shareholder information today and the vote is being put to the shareholders to extend the shareholder reward plan for another year for bookings through 5/05.

The shareholder's material I got today came with a form to submit for the credit on any of my future cruises and it was already extended until May 1,2005, as you said, however I don't see on my voting proxy where a vote is needed for this.

Any RCL stock that you buy by 5/27, you must be on record by then, you will get 13 cents per share dividend payable 6/29. Plus your $100.00 credit. Now if the stocks goes up you are way ahead. If it goes down, hmmm, guess a bad buy.
