I had gone to one of the dollar stores near my house to find a folding laundry basket to take on our cruise. Didn't find one, but they did have gown and suit protectors (bags to put over your clothes, with a hole on top for a hanger).

I bought a gown protector and used it as our laundry bag. It worked great!!!! It hung in our closet, out of the way, and didn't take up any floor space. When it came time to go home, I just put the bag in my garment bag, moved some of the clothes around so the bag would be flatter, and then I didn't have to worry about mixing clean and dirty clothes for the trip home.

Note: for 2 people for a seven day cruise, we probably only needed a suit protector, but it never hurts to have extra space.
