Trekker, thanks for info. That all looks wonderful but I would like some feedback from someone who has been there. I was in Fla. once and read some ad about a casino cruise out of port st lucie. It looked wonderful but when we took it, it was a large boat full of local regulars and I was uncomfortable that I hadn't brought my gun because I felt like most everybody else did. Don't want to take DW to place like that again. We'll be there on 7/24/09, so it looks like the ponies will be running that night.

Hastings Park is a fun place if you like that sort of thing. If you're looking for outdoor entertainment in what is a pretty decent time of year, our local pro soccer (USL) and baseball (single A) have great outdoor stadiums, and it's an inexpensive way to spend an evening with locals.

cookiemantoo,

Your DW would feel comfortable there. It's often used as a social-get-together type of place for local groups or companies (for employee parties) when they want to do something different other than just a dinner in a restaurant. It's a fun way to spend an evening even if you don't know much about racing.

The race track is a fun thing to do....we go once a year during the PNE Fair just for a fun time. Purses are small....there are slots there to play....the food is not bad...but it is a race track.

Scottbee's suggestion of the baseball game is a really good one. The stadium is refrred to by many as the, "best little ball park in the world"....it is just a nice, small, friendly place in a great location...family friendly. (Haven't been to a soccer game here but have been told it too is a fun thing on a summer evening.)

Vancouver is a very safe city.....and the locals like meeting visitors. I am sure no matter what you decide to do you will find the venues welcoming and the people fun to be with. (BTW....we don't carry guns!)

Hastings Park (aka Exhibition Park) is just fine. I've been there many many times. I grew up on a race horse farm in the Fraser Valley, and my family had horses there non-stop for almost 100 years until 1996, except for during the war years. It's been in existence since the 1890s and it's lovely. Great air, pretty track.

Funny that you should mention about taking in a baseball game at the Nat - I was there on Monday for the first time in years and posted some info and photos on my blog. Here's the link:

And yes it is a great place to watch a game

Cheers

I highly recommend a soccer game. The stadium is just lovely and overlooks the trees in Central Park. Easy to get to too, just ride Skytrain to Patterson station, and it's a couple of blocks walk. IIRC the tickets are about $20, and there's a beer garden section you can sit in too if you get thirsty.
