GinDon Posted June 27, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 27, 2009 A few posters have referred to a beach that is literally littered with conch shells...............from conch shells lining the beach, to huge piles of them. Is there a name to this beach? Directions to get there from the ship (I believe people say it's easily walkable)?.............I just don't want to start walking in the wrong direction! I would love to bring home a pretty conch shell that I picked off the beach with my own two little hands. Does anyone have a picture of this beach they can post? Thanks in advance for any info. gammasip Posted July 5, 2009 #4 Share Posted July 5, 2009 It is illegal to bring the conch shells back to the US through customs. Just be careful Where did you hear/read that it is illegal to bring conch shells back into the USA??? We recently returned from St Lucia and we were told that you had to pack them in your checked luggage NOT in your carry on. Apparently they are considered "dangerous weapons" cause of their pointed ends! But it was o.k. to bring them into the country. Maybe this has changed??? Thanks! kendon Posted July 8, 2009 #5 Share Posted July 8, 2009 Generally it is forbidden to take shells, plants, rocks....from anywhere, especially from our national parks. Nothing new.
gammasip Posted July 8, 2009 #6 Share Posted July 8, 2009 Of course any "live" thing is illegal to take.
HeatherB0923 Posted July 12, 2009 #7 Share Posted July 12, 2009 before everybody thinks importing conch into United States is illeagal, might want to read this link from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services to see what the rules are: http://www.fws.gov/international/DMA_DSA/CITES/pdf/queen_conch.pdf I had found it through an earlier post when I wondered about bringing shells back
TaraImp Posted November 25, 2015 #8 Share Posted November 25, 2015 We brought a ton of conch shells back with us, twice, from the conch shell graveyard. We had no trouble whatsoever.
Rare crewsweeper Posted November 26, 2015 #9 Share Posted November 26, 2015 (edited) Read the rules. If they inspect your bags, given that most of these are bleached white by the sun and sea, they'll most likely be looking for bodies of conchs still inside. wrapped in dirty laundry or towels in checked bags will usually make it through.
