Hi,

Will be in Yokohama Oct 8, 2009 overnight. Would like to know if anyone used a taxi to get around or know of any private tours.

Would like to see

Northern Kamakura

Famous Zen temples, the Great Buddha Statue

and Sankeien Garden

Thanks,

Ed and Donna

We stopped in Yokohama in 2006. We took a ship's tour into Tokyo. Normally we opt for private tours but heard that traffic to and from Tokyo as well as within the city of Tokyo was horrible. Glad we made that choice. Several tour buses that did the Tokyo excursion, came back late. Of course, the ship waited for them. A few passengers took the train into Tokyo but had to cut their day short so they wouldn't miss the ship. Since you're doing an overnight in Yokohama, the train might be an option for you. As I recall, our friends who did the train, took a taxi to the station. Some passengers just walked around Yokohama... which really looked nice. Everyone we talked to that explored Yokohama, really enjoyed it. The Sapphire Princess docked right in the city, which was very convenient to walking around there... no taxi required.

Japanese Taxis are wonderful - but very few taxi drivers speak any English. You need to prepare with maps and hopefully instructions written in Japanese if you don't speak the language.

You can take the Shinkansen from Shin-Yokohama Station to Tokyo Station. Travel time one-way is under 15 minutes.

You can take any number of regular trains from Yokohama to Tokyo. Travel time one-way is around 30 - 40 minutes.

No need to take buses in Tokyo traffic. They have the best subway system in the world. You can travel all over the city safely and quickly, for just a few dollars. But you need to do some serious homework and possibly learn a bit of Japanese before you go.

No need to take tours in Yohohama, use the local train to the Buddha which takes about 40 minutes, The trains are easy and you can also get a train to Tokyo Station if you want to get there.China town in Yokohama is worth a visit.

Kamakura

Famous Zen temples, the Great Buddha Statue.

You can catch a train from Yokohama Station or Shin Yokohama Station to Kamekura.Kamekura is a lovely small resort town at the end of the JR line.It connects to a great little private electric railway opposite on the Kamekura town aquare.Alight at Hase and when coming back you can continue to connect with JR line again at Fujisawa changing for Yokohama again.

Its all very easy. The secret.Take your time at the stations.Study the fare map if you dont have a all day ticket.Take a photograhic memory of the characters on the wall map if no english and dont panic. Its very easy.Sit back and enjoy this wonderful safe, clean, country Japan.
