Car Rental in Tenerife

Has anyone rented a car for the day in Tenerife? Also did you make an advance booking or did you just sort it out on the day? Are car rentals readily available at the port?

Think we will definately be renting a car in Tenerife however we just going to take it easy in La Palma, where maybe we will visit the cigar manufacturer. We have already fixed up a private tour in Madeira.
