Whittier Late Night

There is no reason to get off your ship late at night in Whittier. It is safe but there is absolutely nothing to do. Whittier is a very odd little, bitty town. Very, very odd.

Stay on your ship and be comfortable.

We arrive in Whittier at 12:30am, is there anything to do if we get off the ship (i.e. grab a drink)? and is it safe?

Whittier is safe that's not the problem but I doubt if you'll find much open at 12:30 (not even sure if the ship will let you off until the next morning). The town basically lives in one building (originally apartments converted as condos) and you'll run into some people living on their boats for the summer but it definitely isn't a hopping town.

I can only imagine the original posters laughter when he/she gets off the ship in Whittier, sees what is there and then thinks back on this post. There are just some things that you cannot explain to people. Gave me a chuckle thinking of them looking for something to do at 12:30 provided the ship would even let them off.

Just don't chase the bears. They might lead you into the looong dark cave, where, if a car does not hit you, the train will.

Thanks for the feedback, fantastic, what exactly are we going to do???

See the challenge is, we are on a B2B, so we will be in this thriving metropolis from 12:30am until 9:30pm. I guess this is lots of time to relax on the ship. Does a transfer into Anchroage make sense? I am just debating over $100 each plus 90 mins each way on the bus...

Actually, the bars stay open all night to accommodate the ships crew who usually get off the ship after it docks and go out drinking. Last time I was there the nice bar at the hotel was open and the sleazy bar down the street was open and both were hopping!

What we did on a b2b was take a Prince William Sound small boat cruise. There are three companies to choose from in Whittier. We used Prince William Sound Tours and did the 6 hour cruise that goes through Esther Passage. During the stay, we slept in, had a leisurely breakfast, went on the cruise (which included a light lunch), walked back to ship and checked through. You do have to leave the ship and get back on with your new seapass card. Then we had our usual early dinner and went to the evening show. Lovely day!

Actually, they probably won't even let you off the ship until early morning.

You can get off the ship. I've seen younger passengers going to the bar with crew.

You can get into the abandonded Bucker Building, just bring a flashlight. The building is full of asbestos, too.

Hello Cruising Carol,

We are also doing a B2B in June 2010. Thanks for the advice about getting off and checking back in, I hadn't thought of that since we are in the same cabin each way.

How did you like the PWS cruise? We are trying to choose between the 3 companies offering cruises out of Whittier. We are sure we want to take one, but with a photographer in the group, we are looking for the best scenery and wildlife opportunities, not necessarily the kids activities. We are from Oregon and have salmon hatcheries here so that would not be a deciding factor for us. We would like a chance to see a calving glacier and/or the sea otters.

Thanks for any light you can shed.

I only took one company so I can't compare, but for the photography I think video is the best. You're talking birds, otters, dall's porpoise (ever heard of it? neither did I...), calving glaciers. I have no doubt a skilled photographer could find plenty of stills, but on this one I think video is the star of the show. I don't think the salmon hatchery makes for particularly impressive stills. I could be wrong, though.

You could also reserve a rental car at Whittier. (Avis still there?) Then my recommendation would be to take a quick round trip down to Seward or over to Soldotna and Kenai rather than trying to see Anchorage in just a few hours. Beautiful scenery - most of the time.
