Rome - Off The Tourist Route?

We've been to Rome a few times, and last time in Rome, we decided to go to Ostia Antica. This is once a thriving Roman trade town as mouth of Tiber river opens up here. This is a good size ruin. Certainly does not have the grand scale of Pompeii, but much more intimate and without the tourist crowds. There is a nice small museum there with statues collected from this place.

If you liked Pompeii you will love Ostia Antica. Just 25 minutes outside of Rome easily reachable on the train. Get yourselves some Prosciutto,Cheese ,bread, olives, tomatoes and some good wine and make a day of it. You will not regret it. http://cmd.shutterfly.com/commands/pictures/slideshow?site=travelguy&page=travelguy/costacruise1208&album=1694
