Old As Dirt Mom Posted August 5, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 5, 2009 Psalm 104: "You cause the grass to grow for the cattle, and plants for people to use, to bring forth food from the earth, and wine to gladden the human heart, oil to make the face shine, and bread to strengthen the human heart". From the Ryndam last week, here is a compilation of wines offered on HAL: Wines by the glass All prices are in US dollars. trvlcrzy Posted August 5, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 5, 2009 From Nigel Thomas, the Beverage Manager, and Tinus van Schoor, the Assistant Beverage Manager... to share with the wonderful members of the HAL board! Holland America Line Alaskan Beer Tasting ALASKAN AMBER ALE Style: Alt. The name of this beer style comes from the German word "Alt" meaning "old." Flavor: Richly malty and long on the palate Food Suggestions: Serve with King or Silver salmon, flavorful meats and hearty Italian dishes. Perfect with pizza. ALASKAN SUMMER ALE Style: The traditional style of Kolsch Beer brewed in Cologne, Germany Flavor: Alaskan Summer Ale balances a softly malted palate with the clean freshness of hops. In the tradition of the style, neither overpowers the other. Food Suggestions: Enjoy this Kolsch-style beer with delicately flavored foods like fresh, wild Alaska crab or halibut or try it as an accompaniment to salads ALASKA PALE ALE Style: Golden Ale. A blonde, lighter bodied beer with a floral aroma and a crisp, hoppy finish that's not bitter Flavor: A clean, softly malted body with a hint of citrus overtones, followed by a hop-accent dry, crisp finish Food Suggestions: Complements light flavors such as prawns, crab and halibut. Also a good accompaniment to spicy ethnic food. ALASKAN WHITE ALE Style: Alaskan White Ale is based on a Belgian-style witbier, literally translated to "white beer." Flavor: Alaskan White Ale has a soft, slightly sweet base with the unique spice aroma or coriander and crisp, citrus finish of orange peel Food Suggestions: The crisp flavor of Alaskan White Ale pairs well with spicy foods and lighter fare including fresh salads and grilled shrimp or halibut. Holland America Line Culinary Arts Center The back side of this handout has the "Beer Flavor Wheel." I do not have a scanner readily available, but if any requests it, I can get this scanned to post to this thread. Thanks, Middle-aged Mom, for your wine listings. trvlcrzy

Old As Dirt Mom Posted August 5, 2009 Author #8 Share Posted August 5, 2009 Thanks, trvlcrzy; now we're ready to party!!:D Hey, I went to a few wine tastings presented by Ron, the Sommelier. They were great fun, very elegant, a broad spectrum of wines were presented, and I even learned something. The premium wine tastings are the best. They are $35 per person, and you get about 5-6 wines to taste, plus either port or sherry at the very end. You get to keep the shot glass.:) If anyone's interested, I'll dig around in my mass of papers and see what I can find. I really liked Ron. He has a dry, deadpan wit and a sardonic demeanor. Underneath is a very kind man and a dedicated oenophile. ps The wine is paired with food at the tastings. Each place setting has a plate with assorted cheese, pate, fruit, and chocolate (all in bite-size amounts) which match each wine that is tasted. We went to one premium wine tasting a year ago -- someone else here mentioned how great it was. Ours was terrible!! What a waste of $70 (2 of us) to taste only about 1 ounce of 4 wines -- only a couple of cubes of bread.

I'll bet I'd really like Ron, too. Of course, I'm not really a full-fledged oenophile. Heck, I'm not really even a wine connoisseur. I just like to drink:D PS: I was in cabin 401, and I had two punches left on my wine card. So I stuck the wine card in the bible in the top drawer next to the bed. Look for it under in John 2;), the miracle of the wine at the wedding feast in Cana. First one to find it, gets it:)

juliecat Posted August 6, 2009 #14 Share Posted August 6, 2009 Thanks for posting the wine list! How familiar are the sommolier (what's the plural?) with the vintages of the wines on the list? If you ask which year a particular wine is, will they know right off or have to go back and check a bottle, possibly never to be seen again? The list contains a Sokol Blosser Pinot Noir. I'm a club member at that winery and quite enjoy the 2006 PN. At the winery that retails for $38, so, if that is infact the vintage they have onboard, they're marking up about 50%. I may have to ask the winery manager which vintage they sold HAL! J

I'm a wine drinker, but not a wine connoisseur. The wine stewards were all quite helpful, and always presented the bottle with the label prior to opening the wine. I didn't inquire as to vintages. Ron is the actual sommelier (cellar master) onboard the Ryndam, the guy who gets to wear the "tastevin" around his neck. He's always floating between the main dining room and the Pinnacle Grill during dinner, and you can always request his assistance if needed. If you are able to attend a wine tasting or two on your cruise, it's very interesting, and Ron on the Ryndam was always happy to answer questions. As you may already know, HAL does allow passengers to bring their own wine onboard with them, and there is no limit to the amount you carry on.
