greatam Posted August 21, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 21, 2009 I have been there three times-once for 4 days, once on a buying trip for 2 days and once for about 6 hours (layover with Air Pacific). If you dock in Nadi, get to Denereau Island and take one of the day trips to an island. Snorkeling, cava ceremony (it really tastes nasty), nice boat ride. You can also buy a day pass at the Sheraton and enjoy the outdoor bar and pool. You may even want to inquire about the time share presentations. We did a couple and got great meals/drinks, even a coupon for souvenirs at Jack's downtown for free. Just got to listen to all the BS. Nadi is very weird and you can feel the tension downtown. The native Fijians have an ongoing (silent) battle with the Indians from India who have most of the money. It is safe, but you may feel the tension. Just an FYI-the Indian vendors will do everything they can to dissuade you from going into the Fijian shops. If you dock in Suva (which is the other side of the island from Nadi), there is a market downtown and much better beaches than there are in Nadi. You can actually swim and surf, while on the Nadi side, the water is very, very shallow over a 1/4 mile off shore. I enjoyed driving around the island in a rental and getting off the beaten path. We found a great beach just before we got to Suva and there are some neat little furniture shops before Suva with furniture made from coconut wood. They drive on the "wrong side" of the road so be careful.
