BillieB Posted August 15, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 15, 2009 We are sailing on the Balmoral on the 14th September 09 on the Baltic Highlights Cruise, and would like some advice on which ports of call we can just leave the ship and use a shuttle bus or walk into the Town/City with the exception of St Petersburg and Travemunde. :D

stevesmum Posted August 21, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 21, 2009 I went on this holiday in July and can offer the information that applied then. Copenhagen; local bus service into town from the quayside where the ship is berthed or apparently 25 minute walk but I cannot verify that! Stockholm; shuttle bus into town at £4 a person, jorney time approx 20 minutes.Tallin shuttle bus same price but 10 minute journey about 1.5 k to walk.St Petersburg you know about. Helsinki shuttle bus, same fare about 10 minute journey and the same walking distance as Tallin. In Travemunde there was a complimentary shuttle bus provided by the port authority, walking out through the docks was not an option. Hope this helps. If you need any more info just ask! RayF Posted August 31, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 31, 2009 We've just returned from the same cruise in August and I can confirm what stevesmum says. In Copenhagen it probably took us about an hour to stroll to Tivoli stopping at sights along the way. We then got the local bus back. In Stockholm you really need to get the shuttle to the centre. We had a local boat tour which was half the price of the Olsen one. We did use the shuttle in Tallin, but it's easily walk-able. We walked into Helsinki and then got a 1-day tram ticket (6.80 euro pp). The 3T/3B tram does a figure of 8 trip round several of the sights. We then got the 4 tram back to the ship. As said, you have to use the free shuttle in Travemunde. We took the train to Lubeck, which, frustratingly, when back past the ship.
BillieB Posted August 31, 2009 Author #6 Share Posted August 31, 2009 Thanks RayF and everyone for their information on the shore excursions. We have been to Lubeck, although on our visit it was cold wet & windy and very overcrowded with queue's out of the door for the marzipan shop, where we had a delicious afternoon tea.
