fos- is there anyway you can download pictures to a zip drive

Recommended Posts

The ship's Photo Dept. could probably do it for you for a fee but it would probably be much cheaper just to bring extra memory cards. I believe the ship charge was $20 to make a picture CD so you can gauge what the charge might be. I recently bought a two card 2GB SD package recently on sale for $9 and a 1GB Pro Duo Memory Stick for $4.

If you use SD, MMC, MS, MS Pro (needs MS adaptor) or xD memory maybe you could see if someone on your roll call is bringing a laptop, as most now have 5 in 1 card reader, and would do this for you if you don't have a laptop. You could also bring your specify memory USB card reader if your memory is not of the type above.

I did this on our laptop for several people on our roll call during our last cruise. One had lost their camera but did have some SD cards and borrowed my spare back up Pro Duo Memory camera for some of their excursions that they were doing separate from us. At the end of the cruise I simply transferred some of my pictures from the first two excursions we did together and all of their's on the borrowed camera card to their cards.

On the Enchantment, there was a photo kiosk that had slots for all different memory cards. I believe there was a USB port also.

I did not use it, so I do not know if you could move data from one source to another, of if it was just for uploading to a CD. I suspect it was just for CD creation.

FOS has a separate photo kiosk room, but like the EOS, I suspect it is only for digitally viewing your on board photos or creating a CD.

If you or the ship has a computer (laptop or desktop) with a USB (universal serial bus) port and your zip drive is a USB type drive, the process is a simple as copying files between directories. That is if you are using Windows XP or VISTA operating system, I'm not sure if Apple works the same but I suspect it does. Windows XP and VISTA operating sytems will recognize the zip drive as a new storage device, if the device is supported by Windows, then you can download/upload your files to the zip drive onto a ZIP Disc. I would suspect also that the ship's computer center can do this for you or help you do this if you are uncomfortable doing it yourself. Most newer machines no longer include ZIP drives, they are more apt to have USB ports and memory cards slots. I'd recommend you invest in a USB Flash drive (fancy name for a memory chip with a USB connector). They are relatively cheap and you can now get them with fairly large storage capacity.

The computers consist of a keyboard, monitor and mouse. You can not connect any sort of device.

A Flash drive is nothing more than a memory chip inside a container than has a USB connector instead of a typical memory card connector. The photo shop should be able to do this as well but they will probably charge you for doing so.

You can´t access USB ports at the ships computers.

I might be corrected but I doubt there is a chance to download to a zip drive. To a CD/DVD yes as mentioned for a fee at the photo shop. But a zip drive is kinda special and I doubt it to be available.

I believe the OP is speaking of a USB flash drive that some North Americans use the term Zip Drive for. This is not a correct name for a flash drive. If the OP actually means zip drive, he/she should used the much more inexpensive , more compact and higher storage capacity flash drive.

There is a real danger that if passengers can use a USB port, they might be able to upload unpleasant things to the computer, like malware. I worked a case a few years ago where every computer in an airport executive lounge had been infected with malware that provided complete keystroke capture, including user IDs and passwords, credit card numbers and CVV values. In short, the risk where a USB port is open for use is significant, and I suspect that RCI's CIO would have chest pains if those ports were open. During the same investigation, we found that some rocket scientist had uploaded a fairly substantial stash of hard core pornography to the lounge computer hard drive.

Very true....enabling USB ports is a no-no for public computers....people are just too irresponsible.

Best bet is to bring a laptop if you really need to offload pictures from your memory card. Or, just buy a memory card that's big enough to hold all the pictures for your trip.

I agree - buy SD cards with high capacity and either bring a laptop or see if some will be bringing a laptop. I usually bring mine and download the pics/vids to my laptop after taking a bazillion shots. I also download friends' pics to their thumbnail drives for them.

I always use multiple memory cards when I travel and change them often sometimes twice a day. If I lose my camera I wont lose all my vacation photos. The price drop on cards has made it easy to have multiple small sized cards instead of 1 big card.

This sounds like a good idea. I just got some 512MB SD memory cards for 99 cents each. While when compared to the capacity of memory cards available currently, these maybe quite small but even at my SLR 10.2 MP setting a 512MB card will hold over 200 shots in a JPEG format. That's more shots then I use to take on a 7 night cruise when I was shooting shots with film since I would bring one 24 image film per day of the cruise. Granted I tend to take more shots with a digital camera then I did with film but I have the capability to delete bad pictures immediately.
