We will be in Newport for 1 day on our cruise the end of September. We are trying to decide if we want to rent a car and drive out of town along the coast or just roam around the town. We are not interested in touring the mansions. Any suggestions?

You won't need a car if your not interested in the mansions.

There is so much to see and do within walking distance. Great food all around as well! "Roaming" around would be great! It's a beautiful city!

Enjoy!

I do agree with Willbcruisin about renting a car, so here are some suggestions on what to to (some are seasonal):

Take a walk on Cliff Walk: http://www.cliffwalk.com/

Rent a grass tennis court and play tennis at the International Tennis Hall of Fame - http://www.tennisfame.com/

If your visit is in the summer, take the ferry to Fort Adams State Park -http://www.fortadams.org/

View an art collection that just happens to be in a mansion, Doris Duke’s mansion & art collection at Rough Point - http://www.newportrestoration.com/roughPOINT/rough.html

Take a tour of local waters either on a classic speedboat or a 72-foot schooner - http://www.cruisenewport.com/

Take a tour of the restored Rose Island Lighthouse - http://roseislandlighthouse.org/

And then rent it for an overnight stay when you return to Newport for a visit. You will become the overnight keeper.

Visit the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) and watch the students restore wooden boats. Sign up for classes on wooden boat restoration -http://www.iyrs.org/

Put together a group of fellow paxs and charter a retired America’s Cup 12 Meter yacht - http://www.americascupcharters.com/family_events.html

Are you interested in Revolutionary (and before) dwellings? All are within walking distance of the tender dock.

REDWOOD LIBRARY AND ATHENAEUM. (1748-50) 50 Bellevue Ave

FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE. (1699) 21 Farewell St

HUNTER HOUSE. (1748) 54 Washington St

NEWPORT CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH. (1860) Spring and Pelham Sts

OLD COLONY HOUSE. (1739) Washington Square

OLD STONE MILL. Touro Park

SAMUEL WHITEHORNE HOUSE. 416 Thames St.

SEVENTH DAY BAPTIST MEETING HOUSE. (1729) 82 Touro St

St. MARY'S CHURCH. Spring St

TOURO SYNAGOGUE. (1763) 85 Touro St, the oldest Synagogue in America

TRINITY CHURCH. (1725-26) Queen Anne Sq., Spring and Church Sts

WANTON-LYMAN-HAZARD HOUSE. (1675) 17 Broadway near Washington Square.

WHITE HORSE TAVERN. (1673) corner of Marlborough and Farewell Sts

ABRAHAM RODRIGUES RIVERA HOUSE. Washington Square

Not from the Revolutionary period but…..

St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church (1852), 70 Church St, church where Jacqueline Lee Bouvier and John F. Kennedy were married.

The Breakers, Cliff Walk, the Doris Duke mansion & Tennis Hall of Fame are all 2 miles or more away, but are on bus routes.

If any of my links are broken, pls post.

Here’s a link to restaurants in Newport & surrounding area:

I do agree with his comment about the scallop chowder at the Moorings, best chowder I’ve ever had.

For shopping there’s shops along Thames St, second street due east from the tender dock. Also visit Bowens Wharf ( http://www.bowenswharf.com/ ) & Bannister’s Wharf (http://www.bannisterswharf.net/ ) . From the tender dock, take right at Americas Cup Ave, the first street you come to after leaving dock, and just follow sidewalk. The wharfs will be on your right.

A few years ago, we went to the Breakers when it was decorated for Christmas. I believe it was a Saturday evening of the 2nd or 3rd weekend of December. They had decorations wherever you looked and it was beautiful; had a quartet on the grand staircase in the main room singing Christmas Carols; offered eggnog and cookies to all guest. You could walk around all the open areas and there was no time limit. It got very crowed but we were staying at a local B&B and got there early. I don't remember the cost. It was not a dinner dance, more like an open house where you have all your friends over for a Christmas gathering. Very festive and enjoyable; thanks for the memories :).

Thanks. We are heading off for a day trip to Newport so today I will see if they have anymore info on it. It was actually one of the links you provided that showed a Holiday dinner and dance at the Breakers....

Today at the mansions they are doing a coaching demonstration, should be interesting!

Since we love to ballroom dance I thought this might be a fun thing to do. We own a timehsare in Newport and when we stay for a day or so it is a nice discounted rate for us.

Our timeshare is a 2 bedroom at the Long Wharf Inn, great location.

It has been a while though since we used it for the week. It has strong trading power. we are flexible when we travel, so we have been trading.

Today we took a day trip. OMG, it was so crowded in Newport today. The weather was perfect. Anyway we took the re-vampled audio tour at the Breakers, was very enjoyable, and then lunch/diiner at The Mooring. After all this talk I was tempted to go to the Black Pearl for chowder but The Mooring is one of my favorites! We were glad to see that they have upgraded thier outside dining and was a wonderful day, all in all.
