After reading so many posts with questions about what men should wear for formal and semi formal nights I thought I would share this article I found. It offers advice on the basics every man should own. I hope it helps.

Interesting articles, although it didn't go into many specifics I like the concept.

 

I would add a navy blazer as the foundation of a wardrobe and a tuxedo (particularly since your title included the word "formal") as items that every man should own.

 

Also, I disagree a little on the slack color recommendation. The two most important pairs of pants for a man are chinos (in a khaki or tan) and charcoal wool slacks. With those two pairs of pants, a white button-down, a good sweater, the navy blazer and a couple of ties a man is prepared for anything.
