Explorer of the Seas - 8/20 question

Recommended Posts

I was on the 8/20 sailing and there was an announcement made on Thursday night at 6 pm that we were waiting to sail as two people were still in Hamilton. A speed boat was being sent to Hamilton to pick up the two, does anyone know if they made it onboard?

Yes they did. They boarded shortly after we pulled away from the pier where the pilots get on and off the ship.

What I want to know is why they didn't get back in time when everyone else managed to!:p

I was amazed that the Captain did send the speed boat to get them - I saw them board as I looked over from Deck 12 and thought it was great that he did this. At dinner I heard another passenger complain that it wasn't fair as he had wanted to get off but didn't have time and that the "everyone should be treated equally and they should have been left behind". I was shocked that people wouldn't be glad that the couple were not stranded - things happen and even if they made an error, I wouldn't wish anyone to be left behind if it is not a real problem for the ship.

Why didn't he have time. Lots of people got off the ship in Bermuda. Sure it wasn't what most people had originally planned, but all things considered on this cruise I think things went pretty well.

As we were leaving, I was by the front desk on deck 5. The couples 2 kids were there crying their eyes out. The first officer was with them. Capt. made thew right move.

There always HAS TO BE a REALLY good reason for the Captain to wait for latecomers.

It's usually "kids left on the ship."

My first question would be why leave your kids alone onboard the ship?

Parents these days really amaze me. It is like being in a casino in Vegas or Atlantic City and seeing the kids sitting along the wall waiting for their parents while they gamble!

Last time in Bermuda we had 3 women shopping and the ship left on time. A pilot boat had to bring the 3 out to the ship. So it must happen on a regular basis.

I'm glad they made it back onto the ship - I wasn't sure what had happened.

I know that we had rented the scooters that day and drove into Hamilton and when we went to get back on the scooters mine wouldn't start - thank goodness someone came to my rescue. I'm sure that this couple had a good reason why they were late.

And I agree with Tradle - the captain and the crew did an excellent job last week avoiding the storms.

I won't comment on the "why".

The simple fact is that Adventure Ocean is open while the ship is in port, and it is NOT uncommon for parents to leave their kids there while they go on an excursion or visit the port.

Oh, I do so agree - the captain on the Explorer 8/20 cruise was wonderful. He, more than any other captain we have sailed with, gave information. We knew the route changes for Hurricane Bill and there was even an interview with him and the CD on the TV discussing it. Later in the cruise, he told us about the tropical wave and then the tropical storm, and he also told us why we were waiting in Bermuda. He was not a talkative captain, but what he did say was worth listening to. I thought he was great.

I was on the 08/20/09 sailing. Here's what I heard from one of the crew.

Husband, wife, daughter and son were at a restaurant in Bermuda. Husband wanted to get back to ship. He brought son back with him, while his wife and daughter (w/d) stayed at restaurant. Husband told wife to allow for time to return to ship.

Well w/d lost track of time. Husband pleaded with captain to wait. Son was crying for his mom.

Captain sent police to site to collect m/d and bring them to ship which had already left port. I bet that was an expensive restaurant tab.
