Lee-Ann Posted August 30, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 30, 2009 First Time on a Cruise and we are considering the MV Discovery with Voyages of Discovery: South Africa and Kenya in March 2010. Can any one help with sone advice on the following: Which currency / s are used aboard the ship? Approx. How much would an excursion cost? Approx. How much would drinks cost: Diet Coke Glass of House Wine Vodka & Mixer Are there any additional costs to account for? Thanks Lee-Ann South London
OldJerseycruiser Posted September 12, 2009 #2 Share Posted September 12, 2009 Hi Lee-Ann, The currency on board is £ sterling and the price of drinks is reasonable, cheaper than Princess or RCI, but sorry don't have the current prices. Excursions are quite expensive, but in some ports/places, we feel safer going with the ship, others we are quite happy to either pre-book private tours over the internet or wait 'till we get there and organise something at the port. We have sailed with them twice before and whilst they do not have all the razzamatazz of the larger concerns, they have great itineraries. Next one for us is Malaysia to Mauritius, Feb10. Paulchili Posted September 13, 2009 #3 Share Posted September 13, 2009 Generally speaking, Discovery cruises are more than the Princess cruises(and not as nice IMO). Also, the currency is the pound -not advantageous for non UK residents.Their itineraries, OTOH, are great. We took B2B cruises this summer - first one on the MV Discovery (Fire & Ice - Norway, Faroes and Iceland) followed by a Princess cruise (Norway to the North Cape). We paid significantly more for an old "dinky" little cabin with a porthole on the MV Discovery than for a mini suite on the Princess for the same number of days. I don't even want to compare the food between those two ships. The people on Discovery are nice enough, but I would cruise them only for the itinerary (have done so twice). Princess and Oceania (2010-11) have some nice African cruises.
