Can Del Oro chocolate be purchased at any of the shops at Amber Cove? Do any of the shops in Puerto Plata sell it? Or do I have to go to the factory?

According to the Del Oro Facebook page it is now available at all DR airports.

The Factory is a  20 minute to 30 minute drive depending on traffic about 9 miles each way

Currently booked on the Bliss, coming to Puerto Playa on 2/16/2021. Looks like the waterfall excursion is very popular. Any other recommendations? The cable car to the mountain top sounds pretty cool.

The cable car is very scenic I use it as a weather indicator if i can see it it means no heavy clouds

There are renderings of the project at the following link:

    https://www.cruisemapper.com/ports/puerto-plata-port-14370

The project is not a RCCI one but it is privately financed and managed. unlike Costa Maya though, it is in the heart of the town so should be better situated for anybody looking to leave for a more "authentic" experience.

The Area near the port is mixed industrial and residential I dont see any place they could place shops that are restricted to Cruisers like amber cove

  4. We have ALWAYS emailed the MD with 100% success, even though we have not always received a response.

We had friends that cruised with us that insisted that they were told to email JHeald instead. Their request was not granted. They did what they wanted to do and paid for it.

A fellow Brit The Bard summed up HEALD "It is a tale

Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,

    Signifying nothing."

  5. Why oh why do some post incorrect info or start rumors here? It gives Cruise Critic a bad name.

I have always found useful info here and hate seeing the bad rap that CC gets because of a few

I am especially upset that it was started by someone whom I always respected on CC and thought he researched everything before posting.

When the chief Kool Ade drinker starts complaining you know things are bad BRILLIANT

posted taxi rate is $30 one way for 1-5 people from Amber Cove to teleferico (cable car)

We stopped there as part of our tour of the Puerto Plata area, arranged at the taxi stand at the port. That price was negotiable so you might get a better rate than what is posted.

I believe the cost for the cable car was about $8 pp round trip.

I see they cut the fare from 35 when they opened the port, that was twice the local rate

  7. I don't want to do an excursion or pay a fortune for a day pass to a resort. Just want a nice public beach, close to the port that has chairs/umbrellas to rent and bathrooms. That is all we need. Any suggestions?

I lived in Puerto Plata for 5 years in Cofresi there is a beach between Lifestyles & Ocean World chairs were 200 to 300 pesos there was a restaurant with bathrooms there

  8. And I disagree with you.

If you have only been on one cruise you really can't make an informed opinion about the cutbacks, as you've never experienced them yourself.

Many people here have cruised for years, they know there have been a lot of cutbacks since they first began cruising.

My husband and I took our first cruise in January 2001, and our last one in January 2017 and we too have experienced many of the cutbacks on our Carnival cruises. And the quality of the food is definitely one of the biggest cutbacks. I can name two cutbacks off the top of my head, the lobster tails are definitely smaller than they used to be, and no longer offering smoked salmon on the room service breakfast menu. There are others pertaining to the food as well, in the dining rooms and at the buffet as well. And cutbacks in other areas like less staff in the dining rooms meaning the servers have more tables to take care of than they used to so service does suffer, less room stewards so they now have more rooms to clean daily than they used to, no more gold card returning cruiser party, no more orchestra for the evening shows, less singers and dancers than they used to have for the shows, video instead of real props for the shows, the lack of tablecloths in the dining room, and on and on and on. For those of us who have been cruising for many years, we definitely have seen the cutbacks for ourselves.

    Where is the BRILLIANT button?

  9. I've been a loyal cruiser with Carnival for 14 years and have around 14 cruises with them but the last couple years with all the cutbacks I've found myself trying other lines.

Last year we sailed the Vista in Europe and were disappointed. We've also sailed Allure and just of the Harmony. Although we are Platinum I find Royal has a better product overall. I just don't find Platinum giving me anything near what Royal gives its past guests and question if its really worth the few perks that you get with Platinum.

I've loved our Carnival cruises but all the cutbacks have forced me to reconsider lines. I also enjoy HAL but as many know that is a whole different experience and they still don't have walker races on lido. LOL

Anyone else turned off by the cutbacks? Anything new to Carnival that would bring me back? Thanks for you input!

After 45 Cruises with 315 days on Carnival I'm FINISHED with them despite what Jimbo says it is an INFERIOR product.

    I have 120 total cruises

I have 17 cruises booked between Aug 2017 & Feb 2019 10 on RCCL, 4 on NCL, 2 on MSC 1 on Princess. NONE on Carnival

5-6 years ago 10 to 12 cruises would have been on Carnival

  10. Hi everyone, I am currently onboard the Freedom and since my last cruise on her in November, there have been major improvements [emoji2]

I posted LIVE last time, and while I don't usually comment all that much about the food, I felt compelled to, because it was terrible. My feelings were shared by many who were on the same cruise as well as those who cruised shortly after.

There is no question that there have been MAJOR improvements in the food quality and selection on the Freedom. Of course the MDR menu's are the same, however the presentation and taste are vastly improved. In November the cuts of meat were tough and grissly, this time they were lean and tender. The escargot in garlic butter was tasteless (think no garlic whatsoever), this time it was great. There is a crab salad offered one night, and on the last cruise there was no crab to be seen at all, this time there was a nice sized crab claw on top, and plenty of crab in the salad. These are just a few examples, but it should also be noted that the food was served hot, and the service in My Time was excellent.

The Windjammer is where I've seen the most change/improvement. The selection at both lunch and dinner is great. They have actually changed where the desserts are located, to make more room for additional entrees. The options are greatly improved, as is the taste and temperature.

In November there were 3 sandwich options in the Cafe Promenade, there are now 6. The only item available in Sorrento's was pizza (which was really bad pizza), but this time there are 3 shelves of anti-pasta including salads, cheeses and meats as well as marinated artichokes, roasted garlic etc.

I did try the pizza again, and while not outstanding, it was actually pretty good [emoji106]

I bought the 2 night BOGO dining package online, and we had a fantastic dinner at Giovanni's the first night, and an even better dinner at Chops the 2nd night (formal night). This may be hard to believe, but the steak served to me was the best steak I've ever eaten [emoji44]

Overall, this has been a wonderful cruise in a terrific ship with a happy crew. Our weather has been perfect every single day, sunny and hot!!

If you have any questions let me know. It's the last night, so I may not answer right away, but I have a late flight back to Toronto tomorrow, so lots of time to answer questions from FLL!

    Happy Cruising!!!
