  1. I took a Glory cruise about 2 months ago with a friend who only cruises on Carnival. We spent most of our 7 days complaining about the toilet not working, not getting new towels or toilet paper, couldn't adjust the thermostat. It was not one of my best cruises and I have taken over 25. I really try not to complain but from embarkation to disembarkation there were problems all over the ship.

  2. Well I am excited, I just found out that Verizon in Texas has been sold to Frontier Communications and right now the Reward Program is on hold. Can't look at it, see how many points I have until at least April 15 and they don't even know if they will keep it going.

    Just great!

  3. Framer,

I will have to disagree with you about bugs on the ship. I will not mention the cruise line but I stayed in an interior cabin, which I never do, and when I woke up the first morning I had bed bug bites up and down both legs. I called Guest Relations and they sent someone who immediately removed the mattress and bedding, sprayed something, gave me a new mattress and bedding and the problem stopped. I asked for a different room but they wouldn't do it.

Unfortunately when I gave my review on CC, I had to mention this, I felt that other passengers needed to know and check your bed before you go to sleep.

  4. I have taken 5 Alaskan cruises, 1 in June, 2 in May and 2 in September. I can tell you it is colder and wetter in May. Fewer kids on the ship but sailing with HAL appeals to older passengers, 50s and 60s or older. I would rather arrive and depart from the same port, cheaper air. Are you loyal to HAL because there are less expensive lines, Princess and Royal Caribbean and they are wonderful cruise lines.

  5. I looked on the net and came up with 20 different coupon codes from $10 to $20 off but not one of the codes were good either expired or no good. I will just look at my code sites and keep trying. I can get Celebrity and Princess so $20 off a $100 card us great. Thanks for all the info.

  6. Mary Louise,

If you are in doubt I would call either the place that is selling the cards or send an email or call RCCL and Carnival. On Carnival's website, under frequently asked questions there is information about the gift cards. I can't anything under RCCL's website.

BUYER BEWARE! RCCL gift cards are a good idea if you can get them for a reasonable price and use them to book a new cruise. Remember, that if you have to cancel your cruise for any reason, you will only get another gift card back, not a refund of your money.

  7. Mary Louise,

I have purchased Carnival and NCL gift cards and they can be used for anything including a down payment on your cruise, OBC for shore excursions, gambling, drinks, etc.

My experience with the Royal Caribbean gift card is they can only be used for purchasing a cruise, when made through their telephone number and only $500 can be used toward purchasing a cruise, no more than that. You can't use it for any onboard expenses. It states this in the fine print and on AARP and Verizon where I have purchased gift cards. So Beware, unless you are setting up a new cruise, you can't use the cards. Also remember that once the cruise is set up you can't transfer it to a travel agent. RCCL has a lot of restrictions on their gift cards.

  8. I hope that all of you know that the AARP and Verizon Royal Caribbean Cruise gift certificates can only be used on a brand new RCCL booking done through the RCCL telephone number. Your travel agent, if you use one, cannot take over a booking made with an AARP or Verizon RCCL gift certificate.

They can't be used for OBC, gratuities, restaurants, anything on the ship, only for booking a new cruise.

I found this out the hard way. When I saw the certificates on AARP I read everything on AARPs website, there was nothing about what it had to be used for, (now on AARP sites it states for new booking only), couldn't use a travel agent, etc. So I called AARP, got a rep and I was smart enough to record our conversation, because she told me it could be used for anything. I order a $100 one.

It arrived 8 weeks later and I sat down and read the back of this thin piece of paper and sure enough can only be used for new bookings through RCCL. I immediately called RCCL and 3 different reps didn't have the slightest idea what an AARP gift certificate was. I finally was transferred to a supervisor and she knew what I had but again told me new bookings only. I let her listen to my recorded conversation. She asked me to send a copy of certificate, a copy of the conversation and she would get back to me. Six weeks later RCCL finally gave me $100 OBC on a cruise I had booked 6 weeks ago.

Unless you are booking a non-travel agent new booking through RCCL they are a waste of money. The headache you get from dealing with the certificate is not worth the whopping $10 you would save.

  9. I hope this will help with all of the questions. I bought a $100 gift card from AARP for Royal Caribbean. I am being serious when I say it was the worst buy I have ever made. On the AARP website it didn't state that it was for new bookings only. Pretty much what it said was that it could be used for almost anything, they didn't expire, and a few other statements. I called AARP to find out about the certificate and the rep I spoke to told me, and thank goodness I was smart enough to record our conversation, she told me that they could be used for OBC, shore excursions, restaurants, etc. I then asked if my travel agent could take over the reservation and she told me yes. I ordered a $100 certificate.

It took 8 weeks to arrive and on the back of this thin piece of paper it stated must be used for new bookings only made directly through RCCL. I called RCCL and explained what I had purchased, and no kidding, not one rep knew what I was talking about, a AARP gift certificate. I asked for a supervisor and spoke to 2 different ones and they didn't know anything about an AARP gift certificate. I hung up and send an email to Adam Goldstein, that was routed to 3 different supervisors and finally a women called from RCCL and told me she knew all about the AARP program. She said exactly what it said on the back of the certificate. I immediately pulled out my recording and let her listen to it and RCCL finally honored it as OBC for a cruise I had just booked.

So I would say to all of you, DO NOT BUY THE AARP OR VERIZON GIFT CERTIFICATES, unless you are wanting to book a new cruise through RCCL, that your TA can't take over. They are a waste of money to save $10.

  10. Hoping someone will answer this, because I don't understand the NextCruise bookings. I have done this on Princess, NCL and Carnival but never on RCCL. I have read posts that state RCCL pays the lowest on NextCruise bookings.

I always get a Ocean View cabin and usually book 7 to 10 days cruises, so if I booked a 7 day Pacific Coastal on my next RCCL cruise on May 14, 2016 and wanted an Ocean View cabin I would only get $50 OBC and a deposit rate of $50. That is crazy if that is correct. It isn't worth booking on the ship. I booked another RCCL and I am a solo cruiser but with the specials being advertised I got $300 OBC.

Can anyone tell me if I am correct with the $50 OBC and $50 deposit?

    Thanks, Candie

  11. Everyone read BabsinTexas post, she was called by NCL and has her confirmation for the Panama Canal cruise on September 30. Of course, NCL would do this on a weekend when their offices are closed and no one answering the calls. Monday will be terrible to try and get them on the phone.

The casino marketing supervisor I was working with promised me she would call me the minute NCL set up the cruise and of course, that didn't happen. Now I have to wait three more days to find out if everything will move to the Panama Canal. The funny thing is she never asked me which one of the two choices I wanted, so she doesn't even know what to book me on. I have had this reservation for over a year and I am expecting a call tonight or this weekend about this.

  12. June123,

The first thing I did after I got mad about the cruise being cancelled was start looking for any cruise out of San Diego that was 10 days long. No such luck. If it had been 7 days I could have done a Carnival, which I hate, but I would have to not lose the airfare. My travel agent has a condo on Catalina Island and was willing to rent it to me for $1500 for 10 days but I couldn't see sitting in a condo on an island. I could take the ferry to San Diego but it just didn't interest me. So I am stuck right now.

    SirenSeahawk,

I am so tired of calling NCL (and I am sure they are tired of us calling them), waiting to see if it is set up yet. None of this makes any sense and my poor travel agent tried to explain that in the passenger contract you give the cruise line, airlines, etc., the right to do what they want, when they went and you have no say so over the cruise lines decision. But she agreed that sending the letter with nothing set up was foolish. I understand they were trying to stop passengers from booking their air, but have more information for us.

I will tell you that I had to have surgery in December 2015 and I had cruises booked in December, January, February and March and all paid for with air that I had to cancel. My TA recommends TravelGuard insurance, which is owned by AIG. She said they are the best travel insurance in the business. I didn't lose one dime of my money on my four cruises. If you book through a TA it might be worth it to ask about TravelGuard. I went on their website and I can buy my own insurance if I want. I had about $9000 in air and cruises and every penny back was unbelievable. Holland America had a non refundable $150 they kept but TravelGuard gave that back to me. Just a suggestion.

  13. Brits,

Believe me I feel your pain. I am sure that your air was closer to $1800 a person. Will NCL refund that to you when you change it? My change fee for my air is $200, that is a loss already and if my flight costs more than the $300 that NCL is offering I am out more money. Right now a flight from Dallas TX to San Diego CA and from Miami FL to Dallas, TX is about the same price. But as you know flight prices change daily and I can't book anything because the cruises aren't set up.

I am sorry for all the trouble you are having. I was talking to a rep on Monday and he told me that I was getting upset while talking to him and I needed to calm down. I asked him if he had $1500 to $2000 just floating around in the air would he be upset? No one is telling me anything except I can't book the cruises offered, would he be upset? He finally admitted he really would be more upset than I am.

    Have a nice weekend.

  14. Since my cruise was booked through Casinos at Sea I have to talk to that department. I called the number on the letter and they wouldn't talk to me they switched me to CAS. All the reps have been very nice but I agree, why offer two cruises that aren't set in stone. According to my travel agent they have to book ports at least a year in advance so I think they might be having trouble trying to get these two cruises set up. Why send a letter when you don't have anything to offer the cancelled passengers yet. The way it was explained to me was so that passengers booked for Mexico wouldn't set up air flights but guess what I already have and have $400 hanging out there for the flight.

I was told by NCL that they want more exotic ports of call so Panama is it. The October 22, 2016 cruise was about 85% booked and the cruise on September 30, 2016 was almost 90% booked. The cruises that NCL cancelled in 2017 on the Jewel were about 50% booked. That doesn't make any sense to me. Do these cruises and then change for 2017.

They are still using the NCL Sun for those two Panama cruises so all money will just move over to the Panama cruise and no extra charges will be incurred by the passengers.

They have really upset a lot of passengers and I have read on CC and heard from passengers I cruise with that this will be their last NCL cruise. That is sad. It is just upsetting that NCL has done this. I could see if it was 30% booked and they were losing money, but they aren't. More exotic ports is a bunch of crap.

  15. CruisinMaterial,

I have already posted this but I will state it again, I have a cancelled cruise on October 22, 2016, Mexican Riviera. They offered two Panama Canal cruises to take the place of what NCL cancelled. They haven't got the ports for the Panama cruises set in stone so they can't book them yet. Three different people at NCL told me that they are trying to have a more exotic itinerary and every Mexican Riviera cruise that was cancelled, on the Sun and the Jewel, will be replaced with Panama Canal, more money for NCL, more expensive cruise.

That is what I have been told and I believe it. Supposedly a year ago NCL came out with "A NEW NCL". If this is the new NCL I want no part of it. I really liked cruising with them but I have cancelled two other cruises I have with them and replaced them with a Royal Caribbean and a Princess.

  16. Harriet,

I am sorry you are having so much trouble with your posts. Perks are perks and when I book a cruise I always look at what the cruise line or travel agent is giving me for perks and I count it in as money I spent. Nobody will agree but it is money I would have paid if it wasn't put in by the cruise line or agent.

Today, I heard from NCL again. I, too, like Harriet, was very nice when I called and emailed Vivian Ewart. I figure you get more of a response by being nice. This time I did get mad. I am losing my air fare of $350 because NCL can't get the two Panama Canal sailings set up so the passengers that have been cancelled can book the cruise. I am told that the date for NCL to cancel all Mexican Riviera cruises has been moved from March 2 to March 16, (that is the date that NCL will refund all monies paid on the Mexican cruise), so if I can book the Panama cruise they will pay for the air changes. But the woman I have been speaking with said that March 16th isn't set in stone and could possibly be moved again or NCL might just cancel the cruises and refund the passengers money with the only offer being that we all book a brand new cruise at today's price, no cruise fare will be protected. That is why I am angry. I have three more cruises on NCL and I am thinking of cancelling two of them because I haven't bought air for them and I don't want to go through this again.

Everyone is upset about the cancelled cruises. We aren't the only ones, the woman from NCL said there are cruises to the Mexican Riviera in 2017 that they have cancelled, approximately a total of 8 cruises.

  17. I thought I would post an update. The two Panama Canal cruises were to be open for booking of the passengers whose Mexican cruise was cancelled, yesterday. I called and they weren't open yet. I just got off the phone with a casino supervisor and NCL is waiting for confirmation from all of the ports on the itinerary. They haven't got confirmation on any of them yet. Why would you cancel a cruise and offer two others when you don't have the itinerary set in stone. I explained that the letter from Ms. Ewart states they will cancel all booked Mexican cruises on October 2, 2016 and we lose our money. The supervisor said she is trying to find out sometime today what is going to happen, will they get the itinerary approved or offer two different cruises and since the cruises will be cancelled will they change the cancellation date. She promised me she would call me sometime today to tell me what she found out. I am becoming more and more upset about this.
