1.
OMG What have I started ? Here we have a a poor guy/ girl going innocently going about his/ her job cleaning the toilets and sweeping the floors at Carnival's office and here we are ridiculing them and making fun of this hugely knowledgeable expert of the cruise industry. Shame on us all. ;);)
Just terrible Muriel!!

Puma Pants, OMG too funny :D

if it is a her, then she needs "Amanda Huggenkiss" or "Amanda Faulk" to calm her down somewhat ;). Get her mind off the infiltrating oldies :D!!!
  2. Looking at this, it seems like a nice way to get there, but will cut down on your time at the sanctuary significantly:

according to the lone pine website a taxi from the city should be $20-$40 dollars one way. Perhaps share with another couple on your role call?

I am uncertain if there are shuttles from grain silos / fisherman's wharf where Queen Vic will tie up for her Brissy ;) visit!

  3. Hello Kate.... We will be aboard Queen Victoria and will be in Brisbane (am I to assume Brissy?) for only 1 day. :( The only thing I really want to do is the very touristy.... pet a Kuala. The ship has a tour, but all it does is ride around the city and then to the zoo. We feel there must be much more.....are there tours that are sold at the port by different companies....or cabs. Do you know approximately the cost for each? Are they at the port? Or do we need transportation to get to them?

    Thank you so much!

    hey there.

Koala ;) Nothing wrong with that. I have never been but the Lone Pine Sanctuary is recommended regularly here. Whilst Australia Zoo is fabulous, the issues with traffic congestion are horrendous, and concerning. If there is an accident on the highway to / from, then it shuts down and becomes a car park. Unfortunately this happens regularly, and not worth risking missing your departure. I will post some links to Lone Pine.

I am assuming that Queen Vic will be out at the grain terminal, which is the middle of no-where! Standby and I will dig out some info.

Brissy is pretty laid back, but traffic can be a pain , we are all pretty much country drivers (mentality wise) in a city, so not savvy with congestion!! Any chance of providing a date and times in port? I will provide what I can for you :).

I am sure others will jump in too with info!

  4. What is being offered as part of cruise insurance? I know insure and go annual policy covers cruises as well...even ones that sail australian territorial waters :)

i&g have an actual cruise insurance policy that we are looking at taking out. It has specifics such as refunds for pre-paid land tours that you cannot do due to changes in port itinerary, $75 p.day re-imbursement if you become unwell and confined to your cabin (noro etc) missed port / departure port compensations. You are covered from when you leave and when you return. Ie we are doing a TA from Rome to US & back to Aus. We are covered on the plane flight over, our time in Europe before the cruise and our time in the USA post cruise.

From what I can gather (spoke to them direct) a key difference is that if you are on land /day tour etc, and miss your ship, the cruise insurance covers you if it is due to "unforeseen circumstances" (flat tyre / traffic congestion / emergency on the land tour comes to mind), however the standard travel insurance will only cover the missing of the ship if there is a medical emergency. I assume that is for your self /companion, not other tour members. :) that's how I interpret it.

I asked him if they had a multi cover for cruising and he said it is something being discussed but not at this stage......

  5. in Villa we just hired a cab, and did our own thing for the day. loved the poking about and sticky beaky opportunities. we decided we would like to see a village / traditional ways of living, and our taxi man organized an impromptu visit to a village. We had our own dance display (hubs invited to join in) saw the kava growing and the chief talked to us about their traditional plants. :) Loved the opportunity, and our own private welcome!

we also went to the museum, saw the sand drawings and climbed swam in the waterfall. great day!

  6. okies, here goes:

    Thanks thanks thanks heaps firstly!

    1) Avalon. was there a reason you picked them? Please share? Are they a part of a bigger river cruising company? I have heard of them and Vikings. Are they competition? Did you book direct, part of a package? Airfares included?

    2) Rough cost per day of your cruise break down please? Are there different cabin types? Did costs include the "included wine" or was this an add on package such as a drinks package deal? Were the drinks reasonable (cost wise) on board? ie Liquor coffees were the extra?

    3) were you able to bring wine / beer / schnapps back on board? Could you consume it?

    4) you seemed happy with the food. was there much choice such as in room service? or different dining venues?

    5) tours and excursions? Were they included or add ons? Private or ship sponsored? Much choice per stop? Did you "have" to get off the ship or was there still stuff to do on board?

    6) 1147 :D OMG! How exciting. That is memory lane stuff. Did you get to buy some? Was it well priced? Hubs is a cologne man, did he have any favourite places that you saw due to home ground advantage?

    7) LMAO at you pair sneaking off to do something more "interesting" :) my turn to giggle at that. It seems the tours were fairly loose, were there any disgruntled comments when you met back up with your party?

    8) did the dentists have white teeth? Were they a pretentious bunch?? :p. BWAHHHHHH Did that large demographic on board impact on tours / activities (0ther than the lounge not being available at times)

    9) Would you go back in Sept? Is that the pilgrimage dates that you mentioned? Was the weather cold unseasonably or what you expected?

    10) I seem to remember that one direction is reccomended better than the other (no idea what is what) did this or other information impact on your decision to that particular river cruise? Is the 14 dayer better value for money per day, or just better destinations (even if it is just more ;)?)

    11) Would you recommend this as a great way to see Europe or is an alternative such as rail pass / tour / land based travel a better way to get about? Obviously costs would factor into this, but the fact you unpack once would have to be bonus!

    12) Laundrey facilities? Bath facilities? Plenty of hot water for showers? Wasing clothes? You never see knickers hanging over those balconies so I figure no-one does hand washing and leaves them there.... Any tips?

Phew...... I'll take a breath and hit post before I lose it again! I think I have remembered them all....... :)

  7. :(

I had a billion questions (maybe 10ish) typed out, all double bangers... bleeding macair..... took a phone call, opened up another website for someone and back to this and they are all gone! I even had to log in again!

    But thanks so much! :D

Love love love the review.:) All of it sounds so wonderful.

Will start again on the questions! Would hate for you to miss out on my excited tone and queries!!! ;):p

  8. I wasn't sure if river cruises counted here ;)

I should probably start another thread to tell you about it, rather than hijacking this one. :D

Oh absolutely counts! If someone with 12 posts to their name can gave an opinion your cruise totes counts! ;)

Please feel free to start another thread! Pro's n con's for Aussie river cruisers.... Or..... You could be brave n post on the actual site area! :)

  9.

To Cruise Me Crazy - we docked in Ternerife last year in January and it's a beautiful place. I would recommend doing a tour though as the scenery away from the port is breathtaking. We did a tour up through the mountains and were blown away by the views. You will kick yourself later if you don't get out of town :D

Keen as to hear your recommendations :).

Please do dig about. Have seen pics of the coastal views and keen as to get to them. Unfortunately it is the last stop before 6 glorious sea days of our TA & I am a little anxious about missing the ride home! ;) Any reputable advice is welcomed!

  10. My son went on Carnival quite a few years ago and all of the ports that they were supposed to go to they didn't get to go to any of them because of a hurricane. so they just went to other ports that were not scheduled and stayed away from the area that was not good weather!

Welcome Shirles, what brings you over to the "dark side"? :) I hope you can understand our accents ok! :D

  11. I have heard that you can have trouble on river cruises. Not enough rain and the river dries up , too much rain and the river is in flood.

Yes, family of friends of ours had that issue. Too much snow run off and the melted water made the rivers to full. Bridges became an obstacle and the boats couldn't fit under them. These people had to do the entire cruise via luxury coach. They were devastated. :(
