  1. Here's one for you:

Let's say I bring one of those insulated, stainless steel travel mugs. Will the Haven bartender make me a drink like a margarita or vodka/tonic in it? Or is it ok to just dump his glass drink into my mug?

Is it kosher to fill up the mug and then take back to the cabin, say one for the road?

How about unopened beers? I would guess gratuity will go a long way here...

  2. I made the call  today. A significant price drop north of $2K.

    2 options:

    complimentary upgrade cabin OR

7 day review escalation for FCC used within 1 year. Not exactly clear on whether we have to book or sail within one year to get the future discount. We'll see in 7 days.

Incidentally, we'd be boarding gold and departing platinum and have never sought a credit in the past.

    GL to us!

For those NFL fans (I haven't been one since 2003ish), I am happy to share that the Getaway has three games showing.

Thanks for the NFL post. I went on a cruise out of PC on the Epic a few years ago and the 4:00 game had the Steelers on a sea day. I was in O'Sheehans and when the first game ended suddenly at least 100 Pitt fans showed up in full jersey attire. They rocked the place! The Steelers really travel well!

  4. We were also recently on the Epic. We were upgraded to a Haven 2BR villa the Monday before the cruise. The Haven insulation from the masses made for a comfy cruise except:

    1. The Haven elevator which just goes from floors 16 & 17 to 7 was out of service half the cruise. And when it was working folks unaware that it was the Haven express would get on and push their floor button, it would light up and then the light on the button would go out. So they'd push their button again, each time opening the door and the elevator going nowhere. I had to ask them to stop pushing the button and explain it was a Haven express- I would get a dirty look and then they would finally get off. It needs to be marked "HAVEN ONLY".

    2. The 16th floor had sewage issues. Our toilets had flushing problems and then backed up and flooded the #2 bathroom. Sewage smells in the hallways most days.

    3. The Haven pool was drained on day 3 and it seems they were going to resurface it. It was dry the rest of the cruise.

Not a Haven dilemma but LeBistro has been our fav on 7 previous cruises. LeBistro on the Epic was laughably bad and they were only half full- poor service, terrible mussels, goat cheese salad and the duck was like a stringy pot roast.

The Haven restaurant was excellent as was LaCucina, which was another nice surprise. So LaCusina and LeBistro changed places on our personal prefs for dinner.

Getting on and off the ship was a breeze, in fact I was starting our car at 7:00am on disembark day.

If you are driving to Port Canaveral you will see large electronic signs along the way telling you each cruise line's terminal- either A or B. That is, except NCL which was not mentioned. We could see that the Epic was next to a Disney ship so we followed the Disney pax into Terminal A and guessed correctly- 50/50 chance.

I'm siding with the OP and also taking a break from cruising for awhile. Next trip will be fly in to Italy.

  5. Our last Getaway trip on the drink list at the atrium bar they had several coffee/booze drinks. I just ordered one of those and the bartender walked over to the fancy coffee area and used the good stuff to mix the drink. So you can get the good coffee with a spike using the UBP.

  6. I'm confused. I'm looking at the Mondavi Wine Cellars menu right now and I'm counting 5 Chardonnay available by the glass and 8 Cabernets available by the glass (all under $15). We're you actually in the wine bar, or are you referring to wine available at dinner? Because these are not the same. The wines available in the Mondavi Wine Cellars are not available in the dining rooms/restaurants unless maybe you asked nicely.

That's what I thought too. Can you provide a link to the list?

  7.

The Mondavi wine bar..I had huge expectations and they were dashed. The glasses available by the glass were not what I hoped. There was 1 Chardonnay, yes 1...on the whole ship I could get by the glass under $15!! DH drinks red wine with his dinner, the was 1 Cabernet ..absolutely a bad decision by the powers that be...very disappointed.

    Continued later...

I thought The Cellars on the Escape was the exception to fleet wide wine by the glass options for UBP? I've been looking on ncl.com for a copy of the list to no avail.

  8. I thought at one time that I could not return to non-Haven after experiencing Haven. I was wrong. Now I am much wiser after sailed in many different cabin/perks options.

For me it boils down to 2 cruises on a mini or aft balcony vs 1 cruise in a Haven suite. Easy choice as I can lift a phone and make my own reservations and can do without the weak afternoon snacks.

The main thing you must have is the UBP.

  9. We've been on about 8 ncl cruises and the last two were on the Getaway. We had stayed in suites for 6 straight cruises including an awesome aft haven suite on Getaway that was huge with two bathrooms.

We were under the impression that we could never go to back to non-suite life. We loved the Getaway so much we booked it again on short notice just 3 months after our last cruise- only this time we decided to eschew the haven suite and opted for a midship mini suite.

Guess what? We've done a full boomerang and have figured out how to cruise for half the price and have just as much a great time.

When we were in the Haven pool area there were unruly children. There were overserved folks at the Haven bar, who oozed the "look at me, I'm a VIP" vibe. Uggghhhh!

Anyway, with the UBP both times on the Getaway I never felt a lack of service anywhere. We didn't miss the butler or the concierge, I mean how hard it is to make a reservation? We were on and off the ship about the same both times. The afternoon snacks have become somewhat of a joke- chocolate strawberrys, cheese plate or a club sandwich??

I found quieter spots on the waterfront restaurant area than within the Haven. I thought Vibe H2O was perfect for avoiding the sub-18 year olds and the views and service were great.

So for us anyway, you can do the suite life and return to the non-suite life - easily!
