1. Not necessarily to do with this thread, but the reality is; many who live in Charleston would prefer NOT to see cruise ships there, or do not want it encouraged. The upscale "cognoscenti" who live there prefer there be none.

This is nothing new, has been going on for years, but here is a recent article:

    http://www.postandcourier.com/20160522/160529884/letters-show-overwhelming-opposition-to-new-cruise-ship-terminal-in-charleston

Then send Charleston's year round ship to Norfolk!!! We compete with Charleston for cruises and usually get far fewer sailings. Here in Norfolk we'd be thrilled to have year round service.

  2. Will this ship be deemed safe!??? My trip is 6/9 to Cozumel.

Who and when will this be authorized?

I do not want to get stuck in the GOM like those poor people last year!

I DON'T WANT TUG BOATS! I want a nice cruise ship for $1600!!!!!

CARNIVAL, YOU NEED TO SEND US ALL A LETTER ASSURING US OF OUR SAFETY - WE ARE LEAVING CHILDREN AND PETS AT HOME ON A SIMPLE 5 DAY CRUISE.

The ship is safe and can travel under its own power. They are using tugs to help it in and out of ports to provide extra maneuverability. Even fully operational ships use tugs sometimes when docking, depending on the port and weather conditions.

  3. If you can't find a rule against it on their website it is probably ok. I would caution that crew (especially officers) have a lot of leeway to use their own discretion in situations like this. But as long as you have it set up as you mentioned above, where it wouldn't be in anyone's way, I doubt there would be an issue.

  4. I've cruised HAL a couple of times and had as much trouble with unruly kids as on Carnival.

That said, HAL ships do have better spaces that appeal primarily to adults, like the Crow's Nest on the Vista Class ships.

  5. I'm flying into Bush Airport in Houston (IAH) in August for a cruise out of Galveston.

I'm flying in one day before the cruise, and staying at a hotel in Galveston.

According to the Uber app, I can get from the airport to Galveston for about $90 to $100, which seems reasonable.

However, I understand Uber cannot pickup people in Galveston.

With that in mind, does anyone know whether Uber drivers are willing to actually drive you there?

  6. Honestly, I love old ships like that. However I have only been on the USS North Carolina, and the USS Wisconsin (? in Norfolk). I loved the USS North Carolina because you can go in virtually every room, see/touch everything, it was super. The one in Norfolk is very limited and most of the boat is blocked off. I am excited to see the 3 in Patriots Point. My wife and 4 year old won't really be interested in it, but my 12 year old and I will love it.

As far as the tours, I was able to book it this morning. Today is the first day they went on sale for the date I wanted (5/27). I was able to get a boat from Patriots Point to Fort Sumter at 10:30am which is what I wanted. We bought the combo pack which also included a carriage ride around Charleston at a time of our choosing. We will probably do it that night, or maybe Saturday night. I'm stoked!

My wife just sent me a text wanting to go back to Myrtle Beach for her birthday in September. I told her let's hold off until after our cruise because we may want to go back to Charleston instead. :)

Actually, the Wisconsin in Norfolk is a lot more open to the public than it used to be. You can enter the lower decks on a self guided tour and climb up 4 decks up the superstructure. A few areas are still for guided tour only. (Bridge, engineering.)

  7. As several have suggested, you may be able to practice in an unused lounge or show room. During the day, several of these rooms may be empty and unused. No harm in asking them if you can! And I can't imagine it would bother anyone.

I wouldn't suggest practicing in your room or playing Fortissimo, but it's not as though you're taking a Trombone with you.

  8.
It's unreal to me that such a large company can't seem to have a consistently reliable website. It always has some sort of glitch and the time it takes their IT guys to fix any problem is ridiculous.
Ultimately, it must just not be a priority to them. They either aren't investing in equipment or in people in this area. Maybe both. They have the money and the size to have a world class website if they really wanted to.
  9.
Carnival's IT team has a sweet job! If the services I support were to go down as consistently as Carnival.com and it took me up to a week to fix functionality on a popular website visited by millions of people each day, I would no longer be employed  I've also noticed excursions missing from my cruises and that has got to impact Carnival's excursion sales. The "Carnival beards" must not be paying attention because if they were they wouldn't allow this type of disruption to go on for days..
I know, right?

I work with teenagers a lot in my job, and when they fail to do something they're supposed to do on time and properly, I give them the standard lecture about how someday when they have a job they will be expected to get their work done on time and correctly, without exceptions, every single day. And if their job is done badly, their employer will just replace them with someone who can do it better. But apparently I should just tell them all to work for Carnival IT!
  10. Farcus' designs were insane, but in a wonderful way that made me feel that I had left normal life and stepped into a fantastical world.

The non-Farcus Carnival ships are lovely but feel a little bit IKEA.

His designs aren't things that I'd choose for my home or office. But I kind of appreciate an outrageous and over the top visual flair when I'm on vacation.

  11. As much as I love the 2.0 stuff, I think Splendor is better off without those upgrades. She has a fabulous selection of restaurants and bars to choose from, plus some unique design features that set her apart from the rest of the fleet. Let Splendor be different. It can be a plus if not every ship has the exact same stuff onboard.

I sailed on the Splendor last October and would go back onboard in a heartbeat!
