While Saint John, NB has a number of cruise ship terminals, the correct selection for ArriveCan purposes is "Saint John Marine Terminal". I just completed the submission for our trip next week, and that is the only option.

Saint John Marine terminal is on the East side of the Courtney Bay. From experience land crossing they do not care what you pick only that it has been completed. Even the barcode is only used at airports and they see it when they scan your passport

When I was searching for a rental car in Saint John, I came across Enterprise, along with Avis.  I ended up booking with Avis, so I don't have any first hand knowledge of the Enterprise company.

Enterprise is  located at 10 Crown St., Saint John, NB, Canada.  It looks to be about a 20 minute walk from port, but maybe they would deliver a car portside.  Good luck.

Enterprise would come and get you. I typically use them. I would avoid walking to the Crown St area. Not very pedestrian area of town.

  3. If you are looking for Montreal and New England, I suggest go up to Bangor, ME (Route 1 Coastal road), then cut through Skowhagen, ME up to Montreal through the Sugarloaf/Lac Magantic route, then back through Burlington, VT and NH to Boston.

  4. In Saint John, USD is fine it is easy to deposit in the banks here. Or even more so it gets saved for shopping trips to Bangor/Calais ME or sold to friends that do.

  5. My rule of thumb is to go to an ATM in the country of travel and take out what you need and when leaving a country, blow what you have left! I’ve only double exchanged once. (Polish to Hungarian) as I didn’t expect the amazing low prices.

In Europe keep a few Euros as change for toilets!

  6. I walked all around the town with my son. I felt pretty safe, but there are a lot of homeless people wandering around and just loitering, especially in King's Square Park and the Loyalist Burial Ground. There were actually used needles and other garbage in plain view.

Such a shame as the burial grounds are very peaceful and beautiful if you didn't have vagrants lying on benches and sleeping on the monuments.

The city market was a bust for us. Not going to buy vegetables or meat. Cashier/owner at Slocum and Ferris currency converted my cc purchase without my permission.

Various craftspeople set up tables in the port area. Not a whole lot there. There is a mall that is half empty and smells terrible.

Sorry to disappoint but Saint John NB was probably our worst port stop ever. Very lame.

Saint John is like Paris. There is the historical part that we show off that up until the 1930’s was one of the Eastern seaboard’s most prominent port cities. Since then Saint John is not a super well off city but preserved it’s heritage and culture. The mall uptown is empty only because the locals have two modern shopping districts outside of the historic areas around Westmorland St in the east and Fairville Blvd in the west. (There are busses to both areas every 15 mins from King St)

If you look to the North from Ft Howe you will see the one time prominent area that was the City of Portland but is now one of the poorest areas of Saint John.

If you are lucky enough to be on one of the ships like Anthem of the Seas that has later departure times, the district near the ship has a great cultural nightlife that you would miss in the daytime.

  7. I read that Saint John has non metered taxi fares. Couldn’t locate the fare schedules. Anyone have a link?

Saint John by law all taxis are required to be metered. There was an old zone system that some few cabs still use but the fare cannot exceed the meter.

The by-law also allows rental of a cab within Saint John at a maximum $50/hr if pre-arranged. Anyone picking up anyone for hire is required to be a licensed taxi.

    3. Which neighborhood in Rome do we stay so we can see so much in three days and then get to the cruise port?

As a frequent traveller to Rome, I would recommend anywhere within a 10 minute walk of Termini Station

    A. There are tons of cheep hotels and hostels with private rooms.

    B. Rome is small and everything is walking distance.

    C. Every metro (subway) goes there and you a 25 minutes away from any point of interest from the Vatican to the Coliseum to the Spanish Steps within 5ish stops.

    D. The is a direct train from the airport there several times an hour.

    E. There is a direct train from there to the cruise port several times an hour.

    F. If you want to say trip to Naples or Florence. The train station has high speed trains to there.

  9. My understanding is that their job is to arrange activity to promote solo cruisers to mingle which usually involves a group diner, maybe some trivia, or promote a group to see a show. They are entertainment staff, not guest service or a concierge.

A trivia host or performer would not book a reservation for you but if you mingle and meet people as a group that want to do something you are a reservation phone call or touchscreen away to book anything.

On the Getaway in December, there was a group that met at the social, decided against waiting for dinner and went to a restaurant together and for the rest of the trip most of that group mingled or waved and said hi for the rest of the trip.

About $20 cab ride away on the west side of Saint John is MacLaren’s Beach, it has an amazing walk on the ocean floor experience and is a nice hour walk along Sheldon’s Loop to the Saint’s Rest Beach and Irving Nature Park. You don’t get the 2 covered bridges and caves but you get the next best thing without an hour and a half drive both ways.

This is what you can see at McLaren’s Beach without even leaving Saint John, Keep in mind the beach is not there at all at high tide.

  12. I am going on the 9 day New England/Canada cruise on Sept 20 on the Anthem. While the ship will have AC on at all times, anyone have any idea what the outside temps may be? Short sleeves? Long sleeves? Long pants? Capris?

    Thanks in advance!

Unpredictably warm or cool prepare for hoodie weather or tshirt weather. Probably as low as 10 degrees or as high as 25 degrees.

  13. I have always planned the cruises myself and thank goodness never had to use travel insurance. But just curious in this kind of a situation, would you have contacted your TA and he/she would have handled the changes in flights etc for you? Instead of you trying to do it on the ship yourself?

My TA or one of her associates would have gotten an alert of the ships delay, then they would pull a list of their clients on-board the ship and would have automatically contacted the airlines or make arrangements and then email me or text me the changes, along with the insurance claim forms with any receipts I need.

  14. I'm currenrly waiting right behind someone to get on the phone with AA and change my flights. I get that they can't just open up free calling to all the rooms as that would overload the available satellite bandwidth. The airlines aren't making it easier and communication from Norwegian staff on the boat has been VERY inconsistent or just downright nonexistent (I've gotten way too many blank stares, it's as if they've never planned for such a thing as this). Up until now it's been a great experience, but despite the best efforts of the Frontline crew the management is doing a horrible job handling this and not communicating at all to crew or passengers.

The perk of a TA and insurance is arriving at port, and the flight changes and travel plans are already taken care of. When nothing goes wrong both seem like a waste of money.
