  1. Use one powered by battery, like this one...

    http://www.amazon.com/Battery-Powered-Silver-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B00026C98S

As stated above, ships power doesn't run at a perfect 60 Hz (most run around 50 Hz). Common household digital alarm clocks depend on a precise 60 Hz to keep accurate time.

Phones and cameras are essentially computers and do not depend on the power frequency to keep time. They use their own internal oscillator.

Thanks for the help. I have to get a battery clock as you said. The one I was going to use was digital. As you and other posters said, its bec its digital.

  2. I just checked rate for airport to pier #91 which is zip code 98119 and total cost was $35...so, seatac to pier #66 is $29 and seatac to pier #91 $35...both are good deals as far as I could see. Only cheaper would be shuttle bus that you have other stops, etc or the light rail. ....also, if you go downtown and go back to zip 98119 by pier 91 area its only $9.....:D

  3. [QUO TE=alwayssingin;42379962]I'm not so sure my SIL would agree! Last week on the Getaway her smartphone was 3-4 hours off from the time we left Miami to the time we returned! :p

If your SIL has an iPhone then she needs to go to "settings" " general" "date & time" turn off "set automatically" the date and time should appear. Tap on that and change time manually. Worked just fine this past week on the Epic. There is a procedure for android also.

FYI You can also put in a grocery or drug store reward card and that will keep your electricity going.

Thanks for your info. Does anyone know how to make a regular digital clock to work in room. previous post said it wont work:confused:

  4. Just for people that might see this thread later, you DO lose a big section of closet on the Epic because the connecting door is next to the balcony where the closets are. This is because there's no entry hall like on other ships

Oh, and OP's friend needs to ditch 2 of those 3 bags. That's just insane for a week.

LOL, totally agree. She has not been away in 10 years and this is her dream vac she has been saving for (for years)! She also has to pay for luggage w airline too. I keep telling her. She thinks she has to get dressed up and 2 outfits per day. I told her NO, its NCL, Freestyle LOL. Last week went on cruise w 1 bag and I totally over packed. She keeps saying "just in case". Anyway, thanks for info on epic, glad its not on the Jewel :D Mike, have you ever been stumped w any question? You really know all about cruises;)

  5. We used them several times and they were always there within 5-10 minutes and were very professional. At the airport, my luggage was delayed about 15 minutes and they waited for me (no additional cost). If fact we kept in contact by cell phone. Important note: when you have a pick-up at SeaTac, they pick you up at the DEPARTURES level. Also, after the cruise we used them from the pier to the hotel--totally avoided the long, long taxi queue.

Yes, I hear all good about them. I'm going to use them airport to hotel, hotel to pier and downtown to airport. Maple is correct per above. They go by zip code so all you have to do is put airport in as pickup and zip of the pier to find out cost. Doubt it will be that much more compared to the taxi service. They are only charging $5 to take me approx 4 miles from hotel to pier 66. Just wanted to give a shout out w the info i got. Even if it helps just 1 person:D

  6. I called the flatrateforhire. Its $29 from airport to downtown Seattle hotel. They go by zip code. The hotel is same zip code as pier and its only $5 even for the two of us and they come 5-10 minutes after you call for pick up. The hotel was telling me they had a shuttle deal to the pier for $7 pp and the shuttle makes many pick ups before you get to pier. This is a deal:D

  7. Will trip insurance cover a missed cruise because of a late flight? Need to find out BEFORE you book anything.

As far as I know, if u buy ins w NCL u had to book the flight and cruise with them or they only cover the cruise. If you book the flight and cruise with them, the flight must be within a reasonable time of ship departure. I think the flight must be scheduled to land giving at least 6 hours before ship leaves. Then its covered.

Some credit cards give you insurance if you pay for the cruise and flight w the same credit card but its also with a time criteria.

  8. You have asked a question about two different excursions.

1 -Your probably looking at one of the Helicopter excursions that will land on glacier to walk or even have a ride on a sled pulled by huskies. This excursion probably will run about $250 per person.

2 -The other is excursion that takes you up Tracy Arm. The ship will be meet by a smaller vessel that you'll board. It will cruise up the Arm and then return to Juneau.

I'm going on the Jewel May and booked the Helicopter at Mendenahll glacier in Juneau w/dogsled. It cost $549 pp with NCL. Very costly but I hear its worth it. Entire excursion is 2 3/4 hours and they give you boots to use that grip the glacier. I also hear that is the most common excursion that gets canceled due to fog. That is why I reserved Juneau because it stops there before skagway. This way, if it does get canceled, I can poss do it in Skagway. :D

  9. Im booked for the Jewel 11th deck, min-ship min-suite w balcony. Until today, i didnt realize I might be loosing space because I booked a room w adjoining door. Does anyone know if I loose anything like closet space, draws, or counter space? It has to take up some room w also allowance for it to open. I hope I don't but I guess it would make sense that I do loose something. I know my friend is packing heavy, prob 3 pieces of luggage just for herself. Would anyone happen to know what Im loosing?

  10. When we did our 30th anniversary cruise, our daughter and her best friend since babyhood came with us. They had their own room. When they got to it the beds were together, lol! They decided it did not matter as both had plenty of room and each still had her own bed.

When we went to France for a land tour 5 years ago. Hubby and I opted for twin beds as we had heard the hotel rooms are small in Paris unless you spend major bucks. Lol! Our beds were not even a foot apart. It was possible to walk between them but it was tight. We could reach across and hold hands in bed.

Shes right! If they are just friends why not LOL. Trying to figure out space because my friend will over pack for sure. Wants to bring dresses, etc. I told her NO, its freestyle and no need to get dressed up but I know she wont listen. Also, I have an adjoining door and hope that does not make me loose space. I didnt think of that when I booked it. Hope I dont loose counter space or closet or draws because of that. Do you know or should I ask on a thread.

  11. Yeah, it's a slow roll call for sure (although the Gem M&G I just ran was put together only two weeks in advance and we ended up with almost 60 people!). It will be a mixed crowd, not many real kids though (my "kids" are 27-21), and there seems to be a lot of new cruisers (or at least new to NCL) on the thread. I've subscribed to it, so keep getting updated with every (rare) post. It should pick up as it gets closer, especially after Easter.

LOL, I check it out every few days or so and it takes too long to review all the posts I missed...takes me about 1 minute LOL....would u happen to know if the MDR is open for breakfast or lunch? The Breakaway, MDR was only open for dinner only and only the 2 small MDR were open (w little menu choice) and buffet

  12. If you mean the guys throwing the poor fish around, that's right at the corner of Pike Street and Pike Place. It's completely a tourist gimmick, you know - nobody would treat a fish they plan to eat in that manner, and I'm pretty sure they use the same fish again and again. You can't miss it - the crowd will be ten deep with umpteen phones being held in the air recording the "spectacle".

I recommend that if at all possible, get to the market as early as you can - 7:30 or 8 - and have breakfast at Lowell's or the Athenian, then watch the people in the stalls setting up for the day's trade. By 10:30 it will resemble a street fair more than a farmers market.

Yes, I did mean throwing the fish. However, someone told me that it gets thrown, cleaned, and then cooked to order? Guess I was informed wrong. I can try to make it early as you said. Watching them set up? Is there a reason why I would watch them?

  13. Haven't been on the Roll Call in a while, and probably not doing the M&G. We usually do it, often run it, but this trip is about being with family for limited time, and I don't know if the "kids" want to to the M&G. I'll talk to them in a few weeks and see what they want to do.

    Robin

The roll call for the Breakaway that I just finished Sunday was packed. Pages of posts and 96 showed at M&G. The roll call for the Jewel is dead. Maybe one post per day and not many on it. No action at all. I'm probably skipping it myself. I thought maybe because its Alaska and off season. I hear the ship will be mainly be older passengers. Its not a party cruise with kids.

  14. The Pike market is more a "district" than an enclosed market like, say, Reading Terminal in Philly. It's basically a series of buildings on either side of Pike Place, some with store frontages on side streets such as Pike or Pine Streets, and some facing First Avenue (parallel to Pike Place to the east) or Western Avenue (same, to the west.) From Pike Street (southern edge) the market extends around 3-4 blocks north, with the biggest concentrations of shops and stalls between Pike and Stewart Sts.

The "main market arcade" (where the fish flingers and "high stalls" are located) is on the west side of the street, and because Pike Place sits at the top of a steep bluff overlooking the waterfront, the buildings on the west side (like the main arcade) are multi-story, with levels below the Pike Place level (aka "down under.")

The east side of Pike Place has a couple of buildings with little merchant stalls (fish, produce, etc.) but also there are many simple storefronts - bakeries, specialty foods, etc. - including the original Starbucks.

Can you "see" the market in an hour? Sure, but you'll only see a small part of it. If you come after around 10:30 on a weekend morning, mostly you'll "see" humongous hoards of people - clogging the main arcade aisle and Pike Place itself (dodging the crawling cars), queuing outside the door and down the street at Starbucks, crowding around the salmon-throwers and buskers. It's fun, but packed.

As for "must see," gosh, what an impossible question. Beautiful produce, unbelievable flowers, best in August when every dahlia in the world is on display, great looking fish, Chinese pastries, artisan cheese and honey, views out over the harbor with ferries coming and going, custom roach clips, street musicians, Bolivian empanadas, craft beers, the bubble gum wall, the smell of the Market Spice shop, antique and second-hand clothes down under...

It's worth more than an hour, but if you only have an hour, use it wisely. Earlier in the day is always much better.

Wow, Thank you so much for all that great info. Sounds like I should go after the cruise like 9:30 am or so and spend a few hours there and leave before the crowds. Where is the best place to go to see the salmon? If you know. Thanks again. According to all your good info, I have to spend more than an hour. I will probably stay until noon or so. :D

  15. The room phone does have the time on it.

Im going to be 50, cant see it without glasses LOL. Want to see time without getting out of bed and putting my glasses on. I will find a battery clock like everyone says. Thanks

P.S. Did you see how small the numbers are on the phone, even w/my glasses I could hardly see it. LOL my vision is not really that bad too, its only for reading.

  16. Thanks for the responses. Yes, it is a non-stop flight. We're scheduled for August. There are no intermediary airports

I'm the one pressing for flying in the day before and changing our arrangements. My husband is pressing for taking the risk.

I think I will price out the cost of good trip insurance versus readjusting our flight time, adding a hotel stay, and the change in cruise dates.

He's all about the bottom line.

If I can't get him to change his mind, I'll just have a very stressful day ahead of me.

If thats the prob, just simply tell him the flight is cheaper the day before even if its not lol. Just make sure you get the bill. Search for a cheap hotel w free breakfast. Say the word free and he will like that. Dont stress going the same day. Thats all you will think about instead of looking forward to the cruise. Thats just my opinion :D

  17. Lol! you must have been "honeymooning" and cuddling in your sleep! After 30 plus years of marriage hubby and I keep to our side of the bed when actually sleeping. The exception is when it is really cold then we may snuggle, then we may gravitate to the middle of the bed at home.

The only other reason is a bad mattress that needs replacing for us to sleep together in the middle, which only happens when we stay over at his mothers'. I think it is time we bought her a mattress as a gift for her spare bedroom -lol! A gift actually for us-lol!

I only once remember on a cruise even being able to tell slightly where the beds were put together, when I rolled over to say something to him. When the beds together equal a king sized bed I have no trouble staying on my side of the bed and away from the crack.

As far as being married and keeping the beds separate, we are neither bothered by that. We can always "visit" each other and yep that still happens at our age. Now a couple much younger than us may rather be together as they "visit" much more often, but it has never bothered us.

OMG LOL...u r so funny...Just came back from a cruise w hubby...Now going w my best friend of 46 years. We are going to celebrate our 50th birthdays. So, we really don't care if the beds are separate LOL..we are looking for room

  18. I would like to know how much time to alot too.

Before the cruise I would have about an hour. The ship returns 8 am and our flight is not until 9 pm. However, if 1 hours is enough I would do it before and schedule other things to do when I return. Looks like you can spend the day there LOL. Many people are saying you can hardly walk around after noon because its gets so crowded. Just wondering if 1 hours is enough or go there right after ship docks like 9-10 am or so? I really don't know what things to do there besides walk around and starbucks. I never been to Seattle
