  1. Unfortunately, as notamermaid said, river cruises fill up early. With ships holding between 150 and 200 people, there aren't that many cabins available. Now is a good time to reserve a cruise for 2015.

You might check some of the lines for unfilled cabins on a Paris to Prague cruise. For my money, this is one of the most scenic routes. You typically go from Trier, Germany to Nuremberg or Bamberg on a ship, with bus or train transportation to or from Paris or Prague.

  2. We signed up for the free air deal a couple of weeks ago for Tulips & Windmills sailing on April 7. We learned of the promotion through a Viking email. In February we also got $300 each off as former Viking customers.

I was also concerned since we normally use Viking's custom air service, and it wasn't an option for the free air promotion. We'll be flying from Nashville ($200/person for air since it isn't a major departure city). We were booked through Atlanta going over and through Detroit coming back. Ticketing is via KLM, but three of the four flights are on Delta. On the KLM flight (ATL to AMS) we were able to upgrade to Economy Comfort for $125 each. Since we were ticketed through KLM, we could NOT upgrade on the Delta flights although Economy Comfort seats are available. We were told that we may be able to upgrade at the airport.

I plan to post from the ship during the cruise. Looking forward to another great Viking experience.

  3. Alice,

We got money at ATMs--first in the airport, and then later at our hotel. We didn't do cabs or get a driver. You might want to consider the "Hop On-Hop Off" buses (HoHo buses). There will be people trying to sell you tickets EVERYWHERE you go in Budapest. They go by most of the popular sites and you can get on or get off anywhere.

We loved Budapest. Our favorites were St. Stephen's, the Dohany Street Synagogue, and the Grand Market. You might want to consider a tour of the parliament building. From what I've read on CC, you may need to get tickets for that before you leave. A couple of ladies on our cruise did the baths and really enjoyed it.

One more quick suggestion, after my wife got her wallet stolen in Chicago several years ago, we always make sure that we each have different credit/ATM cards. That way if one of you loses a wallet, the other has cards that are still good.

  4. You might want to look at Vantages "Switzerland & the Heart of the Rhine and Moselle. It's a 16 day tour, and it does both the Rhine and the Moselle. I've never sailed with Vantage, but I love this itinerary and plan to try it.

People on CC who've sailed Vantage seem pleased with the line. The only downside I've seen is that they DO NOT include free wine and beer with meals.

  5. You might want to consider one of the "Paris to Prague" trips. They typically begin in Paris and bus or train you to Luxembourg/Trier where you board a ship and cruise to Bamberg or Nuremberg. From there you take bus or train to Prague. We did Viking's "Cities of Light," and we had the opportunity to go through castles in Paris (on our own), the Reichsburg in Cochem (included tour), the Marksburg south of Koblenz (included tour), the Heidelburg castle (included tour), the Residenz in Wurtzburg (included), and the Prague castle (included).

That's quite a few, and of course, you can view the castles along the Rhine gorge. There are also a few along the Moselle valley--for my money, the prettiest scenery anywhere along the route.

  6. I did a quick look, and Avalon was the only line I saw that sails from Vienna to Budapest. It's a pretty short cruise, so they actually start by sailing west to Melk and Durnstein before turning around and sailing to Budapest with a stop in Bratislava.
