  1. OP,  I have nothing to add that hasn't already been said.  I do wish you a happy cruise.  Enjoy.  Once you get on that ship hopefully all this pricing frustration will melt away and you will have the time of your life.

  2. We have a cruise booked and we are past final payment.  We booked on the U.S. site directly with Celebrity. There is a cabin category I'd like to upgrade to and the prices haven't moved here on the U.S. Celebrity site, however this particular category is now significantly less on the UK site due to a sale.  Is there a way to capture this pricing?  The cabin category we want is out of reach here for us money wise but totally doable if we can get the pricing we're seeing on the UK site.

Should have added that we were on Holland America and I believe you said you are on Celebrity so I don’t know how long you will be in port. For us, each segment seemed to be timed to work together.

Depending on your time in port you could also do the boat trip to Gudvangen which sales thru Naeroyfjord and then return to Flam by bus with time to do a round trip on the train.  You will need to research the return from Gudvangen by bus option.  I came across this when we were researching our options for this port.  I do not recall the name of the bus company but it is a short trip so there would be time for the train.  If you choose to do this, I would consider booking all ahead.

Ok - can you all take a look at this for me?

From what I'm seeing I could take the 8:35 Flam train which arrives back in Flam at 10:35.

There is a Naeroyfjord boat and bus combination that starts at 11:00am (boat first, then bus) arriving back in Flam at 13:30.

We are in port until 5pm. So it appears that this is plenty of time even to fit in some walking around Flam.  Does this look doable?  Am I reading these schedules correctly before I buy these tickets?  The big question...Is there enough time to get from the train to the fjord cruise?    Or can you suggest a different time combination?  I don't want to cut it close to our sail time.

Thanks for taking a look at this.

In Flåm the Nærøyfjord cruise is popular because it covers a dramatic arm of the fjord that is too narrow for most cruise ships. So in that case, it’s scenery that you won’t otherwise see on the sail-in/sail-out.

We are on Celebrity and I'm not seeing this as an excursion option.  I was thinking about the train ride.  Is there a private excursion operator that goes to Naeroyfjord?  I'm having a difficult time finding independent operators for excursions as we are generally not a fan of any excursion run by the cruise lines.

  5. We are on a Celebrity cruise out of Southampton that stops in Bergen, Alesund, Flam, and Stavanger.  Which one of these ports (or all!) are beautiful sail in/outs?  I'm considering changing where our cabin is located so that we can not miss a moment and that would all depend on how many of the sail in/outs are truly scenic.  Or are the fjords something you travel to see once you're in port?  It's our first time to Norway, and I truly don't know what to expect for the fjords.  Thanks for your help.

  6. Just came back from our second Alaska cruise this past May. Our first trip was in May also. Already we are dreaming away and considering booking another Alaska cruise - this one, a one way including Denali. So, what is your favorite month to not only cruise Alaska but to also see Denali...and why?

  7. Starting some research into a Hawaii cruise. In the past we have stayed mostly in aft balconies on the NCL ships. Does the Pride of America have larger than normal balconies in the aft of the ship? What are the best cabins for larger than normal balcony size on this ship? Been doing some searching and can't seem to find anything that directly answers this question. Thanks.

  8. Hi MickeysGal - The tipping guidelines are pretty much the same as they were the last time you asked this question, just prior to your 2012 Alaska cruise. Here is the thread you started then:

    http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1647787

You got some good responses on that thread, which would be applicable to your tours this year. Ultimately, tipping is at your discretion. I think you are well-traveled enough, judging by your posting history on Cruise Critic, to know what the appropriate amounts might be.

Thanks- I had no idea I started that thread that many years ago.

Thanks for digging it up. I tend to not do any ship exclusions- this is a change for us- so just wanted to make sure my bases are covered. Don't want to do the wrong thing.

  9. We are scheduled on two ship excursions- misty fiords boat ride and Juneau whale watch - and one independent in Skagway- Chilkoot Charters. What are the tipping guidelines for these tours?

  10. Woo Hoo! Just received an email that my bid was accepted for our 5/21 sailing to Alaska on Norwegian Pearl. We were originally booked in an oceanview stateroom and we got upgraded to a mid-ship mini-suite for $210 per person ($440 total). I am beyond excited! I also bid $200 per person for a balcony room so I was surprised to get the mini suite for only $40 more. I hope that others on this sailing are getting good news today.

I have to wonder if you got our room. We just gave up our mini suite on the same sailing to upgrade to an SE suite. Yeah!!

  11. Are you considering the Jewel class ships? You are correct that the bed does not separate. One thing you should know about those SE suites is that 10500 and 10000 have larger interiors than the other SEs because of the bump-out from the bridge directly above. As you can see in this recent photo of 10500, there's a large windowed sitting area, with a full size couch under that bump out. We loved this cabin!

I can't tell you how the couch worked as a sofa bed, but it's quite possible that the couches in the other SEs are only love seat size. I would try to check into that if you are thinking of these cabins and can't snag 10500 or 10000.

Yes I'm thinking of one of these cabins.

  12. I am considering upgrading our cabin to a SE forward facing penthouse.

Problem is, I'm traveling with my mother, and I believe those queen beds don't separate.

She would have the bed of course, but realistically, can a middle aged adult sleep on that sofa bed or are they that uncomfortable?

  13. Realize from the beginning that you won't be able to do it all. That there will have to be give and take.

Find out from your family members what their limitations are. Do they have issues walking? Do they have height/fear of small airplane issues (float plane)? Are they adventurous (kayaks, ziplining, etc) or do they prefer a sit and watch kind of excursion? Are they foodies and are interested more in local cuisine (salmon bakes, crab feasts) rather than taking a boat tour? You may have to spit up and see multiple things at each port to satisfy all.

Years ago, when planning my first Alaska cruise, this board had such strong recommendations to the "only" way to see Alaska is to add on a trip to Denali, and to "only" consider a one way cruise. That added to our cost so much, that we dropped the cruise entirely because we just wouldn't see it the "right" way. Big mistake and to this day I wish I had ignored all that. It's ok to do a RT, even out of Seattle if that's ultimately more convenient for your family, and less costly overall. It's ok not to do Denali. Even if this is a one and done cruise.

That said, we prefer Celebrity as well, and yes they don't go to Glacier Bay. If GB is definitely on your list, consider perhaps NCL who do suites very, very well are reasonable costs. They're RT out of Seattle. Ruby (Princess) is another fine choice - and Princess has always gotten good reviews for the Alaska itineraries especially their Voyage of the Glaciers itineraries.

Overall - make sure you don't over schedule yourselves. Enjoy some downtime in each of the ports simply to wander.

    Enjoy your trip.
