  1. I often browse that site but having just recently booked a cruise and got a great deal I thought I would look up the price on there. What a surprise that the headline prices and then their discounted price were nothing like what the cruise was advertised for.

The supposed original prices appear to be artificially inflated to make their prices look great but when you know different because you have followed the cruise price it just seems very sharp practice.

ok I've just figured it out...... you just choose the class(es) you'd like to move up to and move the slider underneath to the amount you want to pay per person per cruise to upgrade.

what surprised me the most is that concierge and aqua class staterooms are the same size as a regular balcony stateroom... I always thought the higher class staterooms were bigger.

quick question - if we upgrade, do we still keep our perks? (wife has updraged from Classic Beverave Package to Premium)

How do you do that upgrade before sailing?

  3. We have just tried to get a quote for a 3 berth cabin for the 1st August Med cruise and there is no availability...now, I am hoping that means they are trying to limit child numbers, but equally, it could mean they are all sold out and the ship will be awash with kids.

Our adult son was thinking of sailing with us but he wasn't that bothered, so we are now wondering if we should book.

  4. We did the same thing several years ago with our extended family for MIL's 80th birthday and we went with NCL for the itinerary/overall price/package. Having usually cruised Celebrity or RCL we felt NCL was a little bit downmarket....a bit football shirt city in some places!

Although we really enjoyed it because of the itinerary and entertainment I don't think we would do it again and would prefer to pay the extra.

I guess "inexpensive" was the wrong word. We just want to stay in a nice, but more moderately priced place.  And eat more local than tourist... We like to explore where we go, if we can.

We visit Venice quite often and we are sailing on the Constellation from there in August.

This time we have booked an apartment just off Piazzale Roma for ease of embarkation. However, we have stayed in a lot of hotels in Venice over the years and would recommend the following:  Hotel American Dinesen, Hotel Abbazia, Hotel Olympia, Pensione Wildner, Hotel Columbina. All of them are lovely but in different parts of Venice, it really depends on where you want to stay.

For ease of getting to the port with luggage, the Olympia ( which is close to our apartment) is best placed as you can get a shuttle bus, taxi or use the people mover from the square behind the hotel.

For restaurants where the locals eat I would get a copy of Chow Venice from Amazon as it has some great ideas. Hope this helps.

    Great ship review thanks mirnsd

We miss Bistro on 5..which was always our "go to" restaurant for embarkation days.  Not fans of the Sushi place .  In fact, we have never seen more then a few folks eating at the Sushi restaurant although I assume they do enough business to justify their keep.

We always went there too straight after boarding. Our kids loved it, and so did we. We always saw a lot of crew officers eating there too

  7. I have seen the term 'button down shirt' mentioned here as the chic option for men. I am from Europe and although we do have those kinds of shirts (I am assuming you mean buttoned down collar?) they are not the norm ( or currently particularly fashionable) so they wouldn't necessarily be the choice of or an option open to European cruisers.

On a chic night (if not now wearing a tux!) my DH will wear dress pants/shoes and a long sleeve shirt with a jacket and maybe a tie.

Was on the Silhouette in March.  Many people do dress up.  Some more formally then others.  We saw men in tux, dinner jackets, suits and sports jackets.  Many ladies opted for dresses, long, short and midi.  Also many ladies wore fancy pants and tops.  So you can dress up.  Today because of a variety of fabrics, ladies dress clothes are very light and packable.  Men, still pack pants and shirts and ties and belts do not take up much space.  Also those men who want to save the money and take minimal luggage could wear their sports jacket on the plane.

I do not understand why people think bringing dressy clothes truly lighten's the luggage load.  When we spend a few thousand dollars on a cruise, I typically do not understand what the problem spending a few extra dollars for luggage is or waiting a little longer to disembark- but to each his/her own.  Also, many credit cards give an airline credit with their cards to be used on luggage and other airline extra's.

For us, it is not about the cash, it is about the convenience of not having huge amounts of luggage to transport around Venice as we stay there pre-cruise.

Unless you travel from the airport by private water taxi it also limits the hotels you can stay in. We have been there and done that and it is a real issue in that city (unlike most others) Ladies formal wear is not an issue but packing a tux is, as they do take up a lot of suitcase room if packed correctly.

  9. We have not sailed Celebrity since 2013, but we have sailed with RCI, MSC, NCL, Cunard, Princess and P&O and always taken formal wear with us. I do like to see an uplift in passenger attire for those evenings but we personally always 'dress for dinner' so it seems that we will not need to do anything more on the 'chic; evenings.

Do they not allow you to bring an extra bag or is it just that you have to pay for it?

Yes, they will allow extra bags,  but as we are staying in Venice prior to the cruise we need to minimise luggage as it has to be carried on arrival and Venice is not the easiest place to navigate with excess luggage.
