The actual view from a partial view cabin window, all varieties.

Thank you for doing this, I will miss Joanie's pictures, we really count on them.

As always, the resources available are wholly dependent on members submitting their photos. :)

Thanks everyone for your thoughts so far. Rich has posted a good starting point already, a dedicated email address for this venture. :)

  2. Good evening.

By now you likely have heard the much-loved website featureing HAL cabin photos and reviews sent in from CC members is soon to be going away. This thread is not and will not be a discussion on Joanie, her site, the reason for shuttering, or anything else of that sort. I personally want to thank Joanie for her time and effort on this tremendous resource.

Moving on. Many realize this is a resource that is heavily used and one we should keep going. richwmn (of deck plan fame), Kazu (of awesome fame) and myself (of no fame whatsoever) have been in discussion to set up a new cabin picture site.

We want your input. Is there anything specific - aside from cabin pictures and corresponding notes - you would like to see REGARDING CABINS ONLY?

Please note this potential site will not feature cruise reviews, deck plans or other info available on HALs site. It is dedicated to specific cabin info.

Please post your thoughts here, but do keep in mind this is a labor of love and not all can/will be incorporated into the new site.

There is no timetable for this site. We just want to get the ball rolling so future cruisers aren't left in the dark. Thanks!

  3. But they will get the above and beyond package that offers an on board credit and still has the reduced deposit.

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S4

HAL said nope. Can't do it, it is considered a cancel/rebook and the promos prohibit them.

  4. I would suggest that anyone considering Viking Oceans go over to the River Cruise forum and go back to this past summer and read how the passengers were treated when they were stuck on ships because of weather problems and how Viking treated them.

After reading of their problems and many reviews, I would hesitate to book a Viking Ocean cruise.

They may do well when all is going smoothly, but the real test is how a company handles problems when things go wrong.

This is very true, some pax were bussed 12 hours daily in lieu of stepping foot on a boat.

But, keep in mind many cruise companies fail miserably when facing issues. See: Celebrity Millenium this past summer.

  5. Particularly when they don't have their facts right.

I grew up a journalist and still work in the field so always am skeptical of reports; this one only used Carnival's internal reports for analysis. They were obtained by a Houston-based marine lawyer. I don't care what the lawyer or reporter says when they can directly show and quote internal company documents. My.02 cents.

  6. It is not just Carnival. EVERY Cruise line has a similar passage contract.

It is not just the cruise lines.

EVERY Airline has a similar passage contract.

Now I have 2 questions for you:

    1. If you are so concerned (as I am and you should be) about such things, why is it that you have never read these contracts?

    2. Now that you know that all the cruise lines and airlines have similar contracts, will you still fly and cruise anyway?

Bruce, the contracts are indeed all similar and I've had the displeasure to read them. The contract isn't as upsetting as Carnival's stance here of not our problem." Any company regardless of kind, size or mission that cuts corners relating to safety deserve a close, rigorous questioning. Oceania is dealing with this due to improper pilot training.

I will fly and cruise, yes. I am a pilot so will let that stand alone and for cruising I will and am selective on who/whee I sail. I trust HAL more than most lines due to the Dutch tradition and on-board leadership.

I am by no means saying I'll boycott a line or group. But a company openly denying responsibility when their own records show deferred mandated maintenance stings.

  7. No.

I understand that taking a cruise I am putting myself at risk of not safe passage, not seaworthy vessel, not adequate and wholesome food, and unsanitary and unsafe living conditions.

I also understand that cruise lines as well as all transportation companies must be in compliance with certain regulations that are mandatory. And operators are responsible for that.

"A guarantee" is not a word that can be used in ticket contracts.

We all just have to be realistic.

A cruise ship is a tiny peace of civilization in an endless ocean under mercy of mother nature.

No one knows what can happen next moment.

And no one can guarantee that it won't happen.

    Relax and enjoy cruising.

It's safe and simply beautiful! :)

Honest question: would you board an American Airlines 777 with only one of two engines operational to full satisfactory criteria?

If you say no, Carnival was sailing Triumph dileberately with a failing engine known prone to causing fire. It'd be the same thing

  8. CNN just aired a damning report showing Carnival Corp. knew of trouble and neglected to repair CCL's Triumph Engine 6. Fuel lines leaking onto engines, which caused Costa Alegra's fire, was a known issue but immediate fixes were not mandated.

But the kicker, in response to a passenger lawsuit, Carnival issued a statement that says the ticket contract "makes absolutely no guarantee for safe passage, a seaworthy vessel, adequate and wholesome food, and sanitary and safe living conditions."

What in the world? As they are the parent company of HAL, does this bother anyone like it does me?

  9. All HAL R and S ships are available for sale, not openly soliciting bids but available. Several HMs and captains have said if you like the small ships sail them soon and often as they aren't long for the HAL fleet.

As Bruce says, they are not financially viable to HAL any longer. Unfortunately.

  10. The ONLY Vista Ship I am aware of having them was the Oosterdam and they were not installed till November of 2011. While I have not seen them since I was last on the Oosterdam right before they were installed I was told by a reliable source they did place them in the elevators. But I believe they discontinued it shortly after they started. I think the carpeting guys made the rugs but due to the number of elevators it is possible that management decided against keeping them.

Sorry to disagree with you but I was on the Zuiderdam this past May for 11 days and also on the Zuiderdam in May 2012 and in her Inaugural Year and there has NEVER EVER been day of the week rugs in the Elevators on the Zuiderdam. The Days of the week Rugs have only been on R and S Class ships and I also believe the Prinsendam. It was discontinued with the Zuiderdam.

Eurodam has the DOTW mats, as I'm 95 percent sure NA does. Westernsm did two years ago in Alaska.
