(8:16 a.m. EST) -- Damage to Grand Princess' hull, caused by a faulty tender platform, has forced the ship to end its cruise early in order to undergo repairs. No injuries were reported onboard or ashore.

Cruise Critic first learned of the incident from Cruise Critic member PonyPair, who said on the forums: "Just heard from the Captain that the Grand has sustained some damage to one of its tender platforms, and that we have turned around to make an assessment in daylight."

Princess issued a statement about the incident: "While at sea after departing from Honolulu, Hawaii, a tender platform on the starboard side of Grand Princess opened, for reasons yet unknown. The platform sustained damage, such that it could not be closed.

"Although the platform is not part of the watertight integrity of the vessel, as a result of it opening, the hull sustained minor localized damage which has been secured. The Captain has confirmed that the ship is safe and secure, and he is communicating updates to guests on a regular basis."

Following one of the updates, PonyPair said: "We have been reassured that, though we are taking on some water, the bulkhead doors have been closed and that the ship is safe."

Grand Princess is on its way back to Honolulu for repairs. It is expected to arrive December 5. As a result, the ship will miss its December 6 call at Ensenada.

Passengers onboard will receive a 50-percent refund of their cruise fare and a future cruise credit equal to the same amount of this cruise fare refund. Princess Cruises also will fly passengers back to San Francisco, where the cruise would have ended, and provide overnight accommodations and transfers as needed. The line added it will protect the commission of its Travel Agent partners.

Grand Princess was at the tail-end of a 15-night Hawaiian Islands cruise, that departed from San Francisco November 23. The ship will go into its scheduled drydock after repairs.

  2. Most recent was on Crown Princess according to another Poster. Medeterranean Lamb will be served when it is ready! How's that? :p Served with roasted sweet potatoes, salad, and Jello with little oranges in it! Or I may make a Peach Crumble. Be here on time or the dog gets it. You can always go over a waiters head with requests or questions.

  3. GOSH! If you think those are the best lamb chops in the world, maybe you'd better stick with them. We grill Lamb Chops at Home. Home raised, grass fed and you will never get anything that good aboard ship. We eat at a Kabob place owned by Afghans and they serve mean Chops as well. Lamb Chops should be Medium Rare and serve hot off a wood fired grill, not gas.

  4. It is my belief that the OP knew he wasn't on Cunard. It is in his first paragraph. Just because someone points out what they had on another cruise line doesn't mean someone needs to jump on a and say something that is totally Obvious! Think about it.

  5. We booked Easyair to S America, sorry we did. They put us on COPA, we asked for Biz upgrade and now after non refundable booking find out seats only recline part way. On Lufthansa you get a bed.

Oh well! Here we come SA, in a mailing tube for people.

  6. Shows 11.4 K 12/60 0000 arrival time and there is a heavy tug NW of you but don't know where she's headed.

And why haven't any "EXPERTS" come forward with the fact that there is a outward swinging door on the inboard aft side of the platform?

Why did it fail in this exciting episode? Who want's to analyze it? :D

  7. I guess. Must be those Southern Ca women who say things like and this, an exact quote from a Female Aircraft inspector I worked with: "People are buying Mercedes Benz's who don't deserve them." Then she said, "I am going to buy a Yellow Mustang Convertible. Should iI buy a BMW or will people look at me in my Mustang?" I said, Sure, at 100 MPH and 10 lanes of traffic on the 710, everyone will turn and look at you! She seemed quite satisfied. I've been asked what kind of car I drove so many times I finally told women I didn't drive, I have a Chauffer! :D:D:D

  8. There was a whole discussion on Rib Eye. I and many others agree it was not even equal to Costco. Seemed to be from an older cow then was dry. We raise beef and I worked in a Meat processing plant and I know what Prime and Choice are, I took grading classes. Prime will melt in your mouth if seared right, left to sit a minute and served on a hot plate. My guess is they salt meat long before they cook it and it draws the moisture out.

  9. I never get my phone out and turn it on when travelling out of the US. we buy a burner and use it or Skype from a internet cafe. Ship fees are terrible and my wife needs some minutes for work but I don't care. If someone passes away a family member has the ships phone #.
