I had originally been looking at Maya Chan for this trip, but they were sold out. Instead, I started looking for some of the other beach clubs in the area to which we could go. I looked at Tropicante, Barefoot, and a handful of others, but the Trip Advisor ratings and other online resources helped me settle on Yaya Beach.

At a cost of $45/adult and $25/child (ages 6-12), we were guaranteed a beach bed lounger, a combo platter lunch (quesadillas for the kids), and open bar during our visit. We paid an extra $10 at the time of booking to choose the lounger we wanted in advance.  We opted for bed #3 right at the water line for the beach.  Well worth the extra $10 as we had a knockout view throughout the day!

The beach umbrella over our chairs was perfect, and it included a call button to call for Luca, our awesome server. The only time we used it was to let him know we were ready for our lunch. Otherwise Luca seemed to magically show up every time our drinks got low.  What a guy!

We were there February 2020 on NCL Getaway cruise......we had a great spot as well.....loved the food and view. Staff was very attentive as well.....a great spot.

We didn't get any more "Funnel" cups because I got a request for some Coconut Monkey’s for a few friends and I was also looking forward to the new “Blue Fish” cup that I’d seen in other reviews. They didn’t have that one last year on Valor yet. I had to be conscientious of what I was getting and how I was going to get it back. After we got our drinks we went to see if the “Fun Shops” were open yet so I could get my lanyard for my Sail & Sign card. I get a new one for each cruise. They have both blue and red and have “Carnival” on them but I’d really love it if they’d have the ship’s name on them as well. I also get a ship model and a ship ornament from each cruise. We have a display for those. There were a few others waiting for the shops to open and a crew member told us they were supposed to be open and that the employees were in a meeting that’s running late. A meeting? OK. We waited a few minutes and gave up. Others left too and the poor crew member was telling us “please don’t leave, they’ll open in a few minutes”. We let him know we had no hurry and would come back a little while later.

We decided to head back to our cabin to get showered and ready for dinner then would go back down to the Fun Shops since they would be open by then. When we got to our cabin went out on the balcony for a couple of pictures.

Our towel animal, either a dog or a bunny, was waiting for us on the bed along with the next edition of the “Fun Times” for tomorrow’s Sea Day.

After we got our showers and ready, we noticed that it was getting close to sunset time so we went out on our balcony for sunset and pictures. We were in for a real treat, since this was one of the best, if not the best, sunset we’ve ever gotten to see while on a cruise. There were a few clouds but it was clear on the horizon and we were able to see the sun set completely. We were hoping to see that “green flash” I’m always reading about here on Cruise Critic, but we didn’t see it.

What a long, strange trip it's been… There were ups. There were downs (mostly downs) And then, there were times that it went completely sideways… Even worse, there was the time when time seemed to stand completely still, altogether. By now, all of us on these boards have "had it up to here" with cancellations, no sail orders, and refunds and rebookings altogether. In fact, if someone doesn't begin sailing soon, Cruise Critic itself is in danger of becoming extinct.

I have personally been cancelled on and rebooked, only to be cancelled on again, several times this year already, and I'm beginning to think that it'll never happen again… What I really need, is a vacation. I haven't seen the ocean since December 2019, when I sailed on the Norwegian Encore, and little did I know, it would be the last for the foreseeable future. Now, here we are, on the eve of an election that's bound to tear this country apart, no matter who wins. America itself is on a precipice, and by the end of the night tomorrow, there'll be a lot of very happy people, as well as a whole lot of very unhappy people, to say the least.

I have been bandying about the idea of a trip down to Florida for months, and so a couple of weeks ago, I said to myself "it's now or never"... What I really wanted was a cruise, but since that's not an option right now, I went for the next best thing; a trip to Miami… I've sailed out of Miami on at least 16 occasions, but my time visiting the city, and beach itself, have been limited. In fact, I've never stepped foot on the sand of Miami Beach, but all of that is about to change. On a day that will probably go down in history, no matter what the outcome, I figured there was no better place to "get away from it all"... My plan is to eat and drink my way through the entire area, and then on my final day / night, head "downtown", to the neighborhood where I normally stay "pre cruise"... There's no telling where this sordid tale will take us all, but I'm sure that no matter what happens, it'll be better than my "normal" everyday life going to work and such...

It's so hard to believe this was our last cruise (a year ago this week) before Covid 19 took over our lives. I miss cruising soooo much.

We were very fortunate to celebrate our 50th anniversary last year on Eclipse In September (Vancouver to Hawaii) & On Reflection MardiGras & ABCs in March (yes, we celebrated for a year, why not)

take the silly photos, take a professional photo, revel in the hot waffles with orange butter, stroll the ship at 4 am, dream on the balcony, get to Martini Bar early enough to get a seat at the bar, enjoy a specialty dinner (or several). Do everything or nothing, just be.

Loving your cruise reporting style........thank you for taking the time to post your trip.  The NCL Gem is a great ship......I've been on it several times.  Looking forward to seeing the rest of your journey.

The majority of us arrive on Thursday and shared a Sprinter Van to the cruise port.  Sorry, I don’t remember the limo company.  The driver did an excellent job getting all of our luggage to fit in the back.  Hopefully the pictures are loading.  I am the person in the front row without sunglasses.

  9. Hello everyone. Since I'm home because of the quarantine, I've decided to begin some research for our next cruise.  It will be on NCL out of San Juan in February 2021.  Id like  to arrive a day or two early and spend some time in old San Juan.  Can anyone recommend a good hotel/resort not too many miles from the pier where we will be sailing from? One with beach access preferred.

I have been to this port 3 times before, but never to spend a day or so...….All help, ideas are greatly appreciated.

    Stay safe everyone.....
