  1. *sigh* I genuinely hate this discussion. HATE. I'm so over the "no one said anything so I can do whatever I want" attitude. No one said anything because the didn't want to embarrass you or those you were with. The dress code is well defined and written in black and white. Follow it! If you do not want to, then take advantage of other options available to you. On the rare occasion I see others in the dining room that do not follow the stated dress code, I feel really bad for them. Because the either have very poor reading comprehension skills, or they are so entitled that life is going to smack them very hard in the face one day.

(True story - I saw a guests turned away at dinner for dress code on formal night. Turns out they didn't speak English. Sure enough, someone comes to talk to them in their language and they leave. 20 minutes later, they come back in appropriate attire. All ended well)

  2. Moving to Aqua for $100 is a great deal but really it will cost you $350 as you point out....

This is not true in my experience. I booked on board my last cruise and have since upgraded my cabin. They did allow me to keep the OBC (they actually increased it because I moved to a suite) and take advantage of the promo/price decrease. However, I did have to give up my beverage package in order to take advantage of the price drop (because the price drop was part of the Take 2 promo). On Board bookings give people TWO things - automatic OBC on the booked cruise based on stateroom chosen AND an addiitonal perk of choice (Bev Package, Paid Gratuties, extra OBC, or choice air discount).

Hope that all makes sense! In the OP's case, I think the bottom line is whether you stay in your cabin or upgrade, to get the new pricing you can keep the OBC part of your booking but will have to give up the "perk" of whatever you chose on board (and it may be part of your OBC if you chose that as the perk).

Edit to add - I would do it for $100 p/p. Not sure if I would do it if I had to also loose beverage package. Call celebrity and ask!

  3. Yes - anything you get on board will transfer over to the TA if it is a direct transfer. Note, however, that they only price you can book and recieve the perks and OBC is the standard price listed for the cruise (no Senior, Military, State, etc rates).

When I booked on board a few weeks ago, I recieved the benefits as listed. However, when I looked at the pricing, we qualified for a military rate the reduced our price $600p/p. We opted to take the military price, and recieved the OBC, but not the perk (beverage package). This transfered over directly to my TA too.

    Hope that all makes sense!

  4. My point was that a lot of people won't buy wine that cost more per glass than the bottle cost on land.

I don't buy wine on board and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I bring on some wine and the rest of the time, I do without. If I couldn't bring any on, I just wouldn't buy any.

Having a house wine would be a huge money maker for Celebrity. If they need a suggestion, the best wine I've ever had was bought for 2 Euros while we were in Rome. I'll be happy to point them in the right direction.

Celebrity actually has branded red and white "house" wines. I believe they are $8-$10 a glass. Since they are branding themselves "modern luxury" I doubt they would entertain offering lower priced options....

  5. I have done this myself (and, well, do it every other year). Part of the fun of the surprise for my boyfriend is the 'special treatment' that comes with the suites vs the Aqua cabins we otherwise stay in. The special line, being escorted by a butler, having the special lounge, etc. If she enjoys being spoiled like my boyfriend does, surprising her at breakfast/in the terminal can be just as fun. Always is for us! -:)

  6. The accommodation provided for activities staff, dancers and singers, spa staff, etc has always been much nicer/better ratios than the accommodation for servers, stewards, etc. Now on newer ships this could have changed, but in the past it hasn't been. For example, on many lines, servers and stewards have often had accommodations that were 4 to a cabin. Activities staff, singers and dancers, etc had two to a cabin.

  7. I'd like to surprise my wife with a suite. However, is there a way to do this so she won't find out until we're on the ship? i.e. can we avoid giving it away when we line up for checkin?

    Thanks

It will be on your sea pass and hers as well. Additionally, it is common for you to be directly escorted to a lounge for waiting or brought in board with a rose.

All that said, getting surprised in the terminal is probably JUST as good :D

  8. Hi everyone!

While on board my last cruise, I booked a CS on the 7th deck for a cruise later this year. Now, after I'm back home, part of me thinks I should switch to the other cabin available (on the 9th deck), based on the short walk to the decks I expect we will use quite a bit.

Both cabins are aft facing CS, so there should not be any wind issues. For those that have been in the Summit on the 9th deck, were there any issues with noise from the deck above? Specifically in 9098 or close by?

What say you, cruise critic? Thank you!

  9. The longest I have done was 92 days. That was my very first cruise and was all over the Med and then a repositioning that took me all the way through the first week of an Alaskan cruise. It was wonderful and absolutely hooked me on cruising. I was 25 then and cruised solo. I wasn't bored for a minute!

  10. The issue has to do with what the Celebrity booking agent told my TA .their booking agent said $150 OBC & the certificate is for $75 . When my TA called we booked this cruise for April 5th last minute & neither myself nor my Ta reflected on the open passages certificate ,just that it reduced the amount do to Celebrity ;as it had to be paid in full booking the cruise on 3/25 . Again the issue has to do with a mistake by the Celebrity booking agent stating information to my TA .We booked this cruise based upon known information ,at the time of booking .

The lesson is get it in writing all the time:eek:

Wait, I'm confused. The package of paperwork attached to the passages certificate tells you exactly how much OBC you get based on what you book. There should be nothing to tell anyone. Did you think they were going to up the ante or give you more than what the paperwork says?

  11. When people say things like, " why doesn't XYZ line give me a discount off the next cruise. It's not like it costs them much, if anything!" I seriously want to LOL. If you say that, you absolutely cannot understand general accounting and definitely don't understand how that factors into publically traded companies.

For any voucher given to someone by name, it sits on the books as a liability until the expiration date (or used). Whether or not it is used does not matter in terms of accounting, until it is used or expires. If every time someone was inconvienenced due to a change in itinerary the line gave out discount vouchers, the long term result would be an overall rise in cruise prices in order to generate enough of a revenue stream to offset these vouchers and make shareholders see a clear picture of overall financial health and viability.

Aside from the whole entitlement issue that the OP seems to have, this is not warranted, not a good move for X (or any line/business).

  12. Not only are the not common but its rare on this board to see the word upsell, we usually refer to upgrade. I know when someone says that they usually frequent another line.

Well, my status is highest on Celebrity (and therefore, RCCL of course) of all the lines I cruise, meaning it is where I have most of my cruise knowledge. I have gotten an upsell call on X before, but that was a few years ago. It may be other line's terminology, but I discern upgrade as free and upsell as in paid, hence why I even brought it up! :D lol

Based on the info here, I was able to call and finagle my way into an upsell today. Well, rather, my TA did. Very happy with the price and the cabin.

    Thanks for the input, all!

  13. All the lines are so different now! Interesting that they have changed this policy, but they have also changed so many other things I kind of get it too.

RCCL, HAL, and Princess all actively do this via calls AND emails. I know people that only book mini-suites on Princess because they know they will get a "upsell for $299(or whatever price that cruise demands)" email/call. They always accept and have never sailed in less than a suite on Princess. But, that is Princess.

I still love the X product and will continue to sail them. BUT, I will also book after final payment with a TA, because that is how I'm guaranteed to get the cabin I want at the price (and add on) I want to pay! On RCCL, I'm still ok booking way out, though.

    Thank you all. :-)

  14. I like this idea. In fact, I hope they allow people to complete this via the internet (for free) the last (full)day of the cruise, while on the cruise. It would be great if the onboard webpage would have a link allowing me to complete it from the computer room or my IPAD on ship while not charging me to do it. I'll be honest, I'm GREAT about filling out surveys onboard, but know the minute I leave, I'll forget about it unless I'm over the moon or REALLY upset about something.

Please be smart about this, X, and see it the whole way through!

Andy - Like your idea about the disembarkation tags as well.

  15. I think that is essentially the same thing. You were proactive and turned it into an upsell call!

A couple of years ago on X, I recieved a call about 2 weeks before my cruise asking if I want to upgrade my cabin and they named a price. This also happened on RCCL (as recently as 6 months ago). I was just interested to see if this was still happening here and no one had posted about it recently.
