  1. Well, "chair hog" IS a label, so it IS labeling when a person uses the term. And if the purpose of calling them a "chair hog" is not to denigrate, then what is it? I'm not taking a side, I'm just pointing out the behavior and name-calling that results when two people decide they both want one thing. It sucks to be the 13th person when there is a dozen donuts, but the name-calling and labeling doesn't solve a thing.

JMHO, but if you incorrectly start off by saying I don't believe something exists (when I did no such thing), then any questions based on that false premise are hardly valid. Again, JMHO.

The problem isn’t that someone wants what the other person has. The problem is that the “chair hog” is breaking the rules and not even using the chair. So the person that “wants” the chair should be entitled to it.

  2. And how often have you been at the pool deck prior to seven and waited there until after lunch to observe this happening?

Very often with pictures to prove it. Are you of the opinion that it doesn’t happen as described?

Embarrassingly enough my sister in law and husband were one of the couples doing so. And even after I explained to them why it was not cool they still couldn’t care less.

  3. . . . and THIS is where you lost me.

Could you please point out where I said that chair hogs don't exist? Where I said there was no such thing?

Could it be that I only said the chair hog exists because one person wants a chair that another person already has?

If Person B didn't want the chair, Person A could have it all day and not be a chair hog.

Well you did say “denigrate” and “labels” them a chair hog. It wasn’t a far jump for someone to think you were taking the side of the chair hog. Either way I was just asking valid questions.

  4. There is one chair.

    Two people want the chair.

    Person A has the chair.

Person B denigrates Person A by labeling them a "chair hog".

That is what this is all about.

The chair is not available because Person A has it. Person B simply wants the chair to not be available because they have it instead.

    Mine. Mine. Mine.

So you don’t think there is such a thing as chair hogs? You think it’s acceptable for someone to go out to the pool deck at 7 in the morning, put a towel down, only to return after lunch time?

  5. I’m using an iPhone and at the top right corner tap Member, then select User Control Panel. Scroll down to Settings & Options, then tap Edit Ignore List. Then fill in box below: Add a Member to Your List....

Are we really discussing someone’s avatar? Come on. Get over it.

  6. Nope. Just like at the airport or at a hotel lobby if you use the restroom or go to your room or go to the lobby bar you take your things. You find a new seat thereafter.

Your logic is flawed. For one, at the airport I have absolutely left my bag at a chair when going to use the restroom. I mean who wants to lug their bag with them into the bathroom?

  7. All that NCL needs to do is put up a sign that says that belongings may not be left unattended on chairs/couches and that guests are free to move them to under the chair if they see unattended items there. They can then pick up anything under the chairs and put in lost and found.

This won’t work at the pool because there is a legitimate need to leave things on chairs in order to use the pool . Not so in the OL. There is no justification for leaving things on a chair any more than you would in a hotel lobby.

A sign like that would have people do what they do at a hotel lobby or in an airport. You get up, you take all your stuff with you.

So I can’t go to the bar to get a drink?

  8. Hogging is not “ camping out” to me. It’s trying to claim possession while not there. Ala towels on deck chairs. My question was really about what “ things” would be used to “hog”.

In any event anything left on an observation lounge chair would have to be considered in my mind to be abandoned if the owner does not take it with them when they leave the chair for more than 5 minutes. I would turn them in to a crew member so they can be brought to lost and found.

There is no excuse for leaving things on a chair for longer. Unlike at a pool where you can be using the chair to hold things while you get in the pool.

What if you have to do number 2? Lmao

  9. We must, or different ships or different times. I haven't done a big boat cruise since 2011, and honestly, one of the biggest reasons was my perception as I've said. It's not that someone is in my face pressuring me personally (other than my spa experience, which made me stop getting treatments), but the constant commercials got annoying. I love my small board Tradewinds cruises, but DH won't go on them, and he asked about a big boat cruise, so we're giving it another try.

btw the water thing wasn't that they brought a sealed bottle of water to the table so you had a choice about paying and were at least aware there would be a charge - the waiters would walk around with bottled water in a bucket like is used for wine, and if you asked for water, sometimes you'd get it poured from those bottles before you could stop them, or you wouldn't even realize and that is what you would be given. This happened to me a couple of times when I asked for water like you would at any restaurant, and I had seen other CC posts around then where it happened to other cruisers--you don't realize until you get handed a bill. Hopefully it's stopped now.

Well you did use the word unrelenting. And I don’t know what to say about your water experience. If you see someone pouring water out of a bottle just say no thanks, Tap is fine. Although I cannot say that has ever happened to me. My only thought is that the waiter actually thought that’s what you wanted. Can’t imagine them trying to be that sneaky.

  10. Thanks Keith!

So if I have a SDP (Specialty Dining Package?), which specialty restaurants (on the Pearl in particular) does that apply to and what $ does it cover.

Sorry to sound so dumb but this is our first NCL cruise; have only done Princess and HAL before.

(And, I must say, NCL sounds particularly complicated and nickel-and-dimey. :-( )

I think you will realize it’s not nickel and dimey at all. Most if not all that you pay for is only if you want to. And I think you will find the overall cost you spend will be similar if not cheaper than other lines.

  11. This is a cynical point of view, but my experience with cruising is that the cruise fare really just buy you a ticket to a money grab/high pressure sales scenario. No, you don't HAVE to spend another penny, other than DSC (prepaid) and other appropriate tips for Haven people - but outside your suite, the pressure to spend is unrelenting. Spa treatments are the spa tech pushing other products & services; there are art auctions and extra-cost opportunities galore, booze is pushed hard (although with UBP that pressure is gone). There's even the "water scam" - ask for water and if you aren't careful they'll silently give you "for-cost" water out of a bottle. And of course, almost every extra-cost item has that 20% "tip" surcharge. Waiting for the gift shop to add tips :>

I have never been pressured to buy anything I didn’t want. Me or my wife never approached about the spa. Ask for water all the time, never given a bottle. But even if that happens why would I give them my card to charge me? I would just say no thanks i would like tap please. Art auctions being a money grab/sales pressure? Come on! Bottom line, I feel like we cruise on different lines cause I’ve never experienced any of this.

  12. shuttle. I would not take Uber ever since they are not regulated. Super Shuttle will do a good job.

Nothing wrong with Uber or Lyft and vehicles usually much nicer and drivers usually nicer too.

  13. It’s all simple economics supply and demand. If there are more people that want to ride the go carts than they can handle, the obvious thing is to increase the price. It’s not rocket science.

Besides $10 is not that expensive. We have a go kart track near my house that charges $20 a race. Plus an$8 yearly license fee.

  14. Well, I would share the 100$ OBC. So still 50$ perk for the buyer. [emoji3]

Well there you go! Somebody hook this person up! Lol. I will be on the Bliss in 2 weeks. So if you haven’t been able to procure one before then, I will certainly help you out.

  15. If you prepaid and have credit card statement proving it then I can’t see how there is anyway they can argue with you. Worse come to worse you can dispute it with your credit card company.

  16. You are right, it's just called Cruise Next, but they do differente between 'regalur' and Haven cabins.

And there is a perk for the one who is buying the Cruise Next. If you buy a Haven Cruise Next for 500$, you get 100$ obc for your current trip. And you can transfer the Cruise Next to any other account. That's what I'm looking for. See here:

    https://www.ncl.com/de/en/cruisenext

The OBC is not a perk. It just lowers the cost of the certificate. So you wind up with a cert worth $500 that you paid $409 for. Now...... if you are saying that you will give someone $500 for a $500 certificate then yes the person buying it for you would be receiving a $100 perk. However most of the times when people sell the certificates here they are only getting what they actually paid for them. Otherwise people would buy and sell them like crazy.

  17. I just learned that everyone can buy a Haven Cruise Next award. I would really appreciate if you could buy one for me when you are on the Breakaway next week. I think there is also some perk for you.

    Would that work for you?

Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk

I think you are confusing people by using the word award. As far as I know it is just called Cruise Next (Previously called Future Cruise Certificates).

Additionally there would be no perk for the person buying it unless they would be charging you more than what they paid.

  18. Hotels are non-smoking. They should make cruise ships non-smoking.

Planes are non-smoking. They should make cruise ships non-smoking.

Office buildings are non-smoking. They should make cruise ships non-smoking.

Restaurants are non-smoking. They should make cruise ships non-smoking.

This logic does not transfer. For one there are still hotels and bars etc that allow smoking inside. Additionally there are plenty of restaurants that allow smoking outside and that’s exactly where the smoking areas are on the ships.

  19. The same thing happened to me on the Dawn and on the Jewel. I went to the Martini tasting and really liked one of the martinis and tried to order one later. They said "those are not available. Order one off the menu".

Of course they knew how to make them because they made them for the tasting an hour earlier. And I find it hard to believe they had just enough ingredients for the people who showed up for the martini tasting and none left over to serve you later.

Why would any bar make a delicious drink to get you hooked on and then not sell it again? Very dumb management decision!

Because they want you to pay for the tasting and not get it free with the UBP.

However if you know what the ingredients are just tell the bartender how you want it made and tip well and I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t make it for you.

  20. OP said she wasn't unhappy. If I paid a certain amount, then found that a better room was going for that same amount, I'd be unhappy. OP's only comment was that she thought it was silly to call it a compensation. I happen to agree. Yes, they were under no obligation to upgrade her, but if there were rooms available, and she had paid that amount, why shouldn't they? That's what's called customer service and helps to ensure return customers. The better word may have been accommodation. But I think her point was that she didn't see it as a compensation, since she had paid what was the going price for that upgraded room. Let the flamers reply, lol.

No flame here. Just wondering if you read my post? I agree that the customer service aspect says that they should upgrade her however the reason they lowered the prices was to entice new people to book, not to upgrade everyone who notices the cheaper prices. Good for NCL agreeing to upgrade her but I see no problem for them calling it compensation. And yes, I do know the dictionary definition.
