I'll start with the Princess App.  I've had it on phone for some time and loved the fact it would count down the days to the next cruise but no more.   According to the App (it has been like this for over a week) it will say good evening regardless of the time of day and then show we  have 106 days, 11 hours and 52minutes before the next cruise.   When it got stuck on 111days I thought it must be counting down by weeks but why have it on the App if it is no longer a daily count down.  There were issues with the App last time we were on (failed to order drinkw when we were at the pool) so to see this happen when we aren't on board makes me seriously think of deleting the App.

Now Cruise Critic.  I first started using CC when I was living in Canada.  Now if I want to go to CruiseCritic.com as it says I can and always has done in the past,  it goes to an external page (flightsand packages.com) which is not what I want.  So I am also thinking I will stop using this previously excelllent website.

It appears that the sites think they are improving the experince by doing updates but I have yet to find this the case

Regarding the crusiecritic redirect try clearing the DNS cache on your device and in your router as their local DNS cache may be corrupted. Also clear your browser cache as that may be corrupted. You may also have malware on your device.

I ma not sure why you chose too have two different topics in one post but it is more effective to have one topic per post.

I must say the Princess app sucks. I wish they’d let me book everything from my browser (looking at you dining reservations). I thought the Celebrity app was bad, but the Princess app makes that one look good as it is simply dreadful pre-cruise.  Glitchy, slow, difficult to sign into - I have four Princess cruises booked (two back to back), and it makes me want to cancel. I won’t, but the app is frustrating, to say the least.

There is a web version of the app that has a better interface for booking dining reservations.

I know that I am late to this thread, but is it normal procedure for cruise ships to use tugs in San Francisco harbor?

Yes it is normal for shipping to use tugs in San Francisco area..

There are strong currents and the wind can gust rapidly and with changing direction just in a matter of minutes. In addition as a vessel moves in the bay it can come in and out of wind shadows. (I know of places where there can be no wind but you move a few feet in the water and you suddenly hit a very high wind). The high sides of the large vessels thus act like sails, they need assistance navigating into position to dock.

I looked at the nearest to pier 27 NOAA weather station reports for the time of the incident and the wind was definitely pulsating in a weird pattern,

    It's called a conversation.

NavArch is being lauded as an expert in this thread and then goes on to make statements saying that we have enough information to come to a preliminary conclusion (we don't). I'm simply trying to determine what his preliminary conclusion is, since it was not at all clear from his post.

    Is that okay with you?

I suspect that the investigation will look at the current at the time of the incident and the direction of the wind and wind gusts at the time of the incident. I took a look at the current at that location and the NOAA report of the wind and wind gusts at their nearest weather station at the time  frame of the incident. The combination of current and direction of wind and wind gusts were not favorable. I suspect one of the recommendations of any investigation will be to have instrumentation placed at the terminal to detect wind conditions and provide alerts to shipping in a similar fashion to what is at the airport. On the other hand NOAA may put instrumentation closer to the terminal but that would depend on if they have the budget to fund that.

How Kosher are you? If strict how can you eat off of a plate that probably at some point had shrimp or pork on it? Will you need paper plates and plastic silverware?

I suspect dishes and cutlery going through an industrial washing machine/sterilizer may qualify as kosher but a consultation with a rabbi may be necessary to resolve the issue. this is loosely based on something I was taught many decades ago.

Plastic flatware may or may not be kosher depending on the release material used in the molds.

on the last cruise I wore 'real dress shoes' (years ago) - I started pointing out to my wife how many men were wearing tennis shoes, etc.  She stated she never really noticed - I said 'exactly' -

next cruise - black on black leather tennis shoes, with rubber soles - now have the same style in dark brown also.  Crocs??? are you kidding me - maybe by the pool if you're 12 and under 😉🦄😎

Somewhere buried in the FAQs Princess recommends rubber soled shoes so you actually complied with their recommendation.

As I posted i did think that asking that question on Shabbat was a little strange. I use electronics (obviously) but do keep Kosher. We have a situation where there is a commitment during Passover and the only way I can see to do it is to be on a cruise so I would need three pre-packaged meals every day. If it were any other week cold cereal for breakfast would be fine, as would cold food for lunch. I know Princess has the pre-packaged dinners if preordered in advance.

I have googled the question and there were no definitive answers. I'll call Princess on Monday but don't expect to get much help  so I was hoping someone on here had personal experience. I have a feeling I'll not be able to fulfill this commitment.

I do not know if this email address is still in use but you can try dietaryrequest@princesscruises.com Maybe someone else can confirm if it still in use.

In addition I do not know if they have suitable wine on board. You may have to take your own for services.

  8. For Kosher meals you need to inform Princess prior to your cruise.

Make sure to deal with this well before embarkation day.

    The following is from https://www.princess.com/learn/faq/onboard/dining-and-nightlife/

The TL;DR version would be:  This incident is costing Princess/Carnival several boatloads of money.

Maybe they can just take Ruby over to Mare Island Shipyard and fix her up.  Oh, wait, Mare Island Shipyard doesn't exist anymore.

There are other ship repair yards in San Francisco Bay.

Repairs from this weeks incident aside, what work is being planned to be done in September and what constitutes Major refurbishment? We are considering booking for December and curious what might change or be renovated

Someone on board will have to ask an officer if they can provide details of the upcoming dry dock / wet dock that is scheduled for late September / October. I was told most of the crew were being sent home for the duration.  That is unusual as they are typically used for deep cleaning / fire watch etc..

Normally, only the Captain would be operating the propeller/stern thruster/bow thruster controls on the console .... in this case on the port bridge wing while approaching the berth on the port side. Perhaps the Staff Captain (or other Senior Navigation Officer) could operate the controls at the Captain's discretion, but not likely in this Pier 27 SF docking scenario. As I understand normal bridge procedures, the Pilot would never touch the controls, only give advice to the Captain. The Pilot may be communicating instructions to the tug Captains however.

Have you actually read the law regarding pilotage in San Francisco Bay?  Have you read the "Pilot-Master Exchange Card" for San Francisco Bay ?

The Past Track shown on Marine Traffic is extremely unusual. There were clearly several failed attempts to maneuver the ship into position. Typically this pattern shows the ship moving the bow southerly ahead of Pier 27, then swinging the bow to port as the stern approaches the dock. That track out to the north is completely abnormal for this maneuver.

I wonder what the current direction and velocity was at the time and the wind direction and velocity at the time. Looking at the history at NOAA the winds were gusting and changing directions quite frequently...not ideal for a high sided vessel in a confined space.

Regarding the need for Pilots:  Obviously it's required to have pilots guide the ships into the harbor. In San Francisco bay there are very specific channels that are dredged to make them safe for ships to use. Many people don't realize that the average depth of San Francisco Bay is only 12 to 15 feet. I know that I always thought it was "obviously" much deeper than that. Apparently I was badly mistaken.

It is actually a legal requirement that a licensed San Francisco Bay Bar Pilot is used.

My chart shows that Pier 27 has been dredged to 37 feet while the neighboring pier 23 is 23 feet on its pier 27 facing side.

If the ship isn't going to sail why would they have people go to the pier?  Easier to keep them at the hotel where they are some what comfortable and if need be find them airfare and send them home.

Actually it would be easier to keep them on the ship and if need be issue travel vouchers etc on the ship. If they are no shows at 4 PM it could be claimed that said passengers would have been no shows anyway.

But he assumes overall responsibility for the ship and will most likely pay the price of someone else's mistake.

My understanding is that Bar Pilot is in full command of movements and the captain at that point is under the Bar Pilot.  The San Francisco Bar Pilots are highly trained. It is not expected that the master of a ship that is not permanently in the San Francisco Bay would understand all the weird currents, rocks, shifting sand banks, etc., in the Bay.
