  1. This may sound odd but I usually search for different soft drinks that may not be normally available in the US. For instance, flavors of Fanta that may be only available in foreign markets. Sometimes I've brought them home or tried them back in my cabin as an after dinner treat. I'll be disappointed if I get turned away when coming back aboard with what I constitute as a souvenir. If push comes to shove I wonder if they'll let me "check" a bottle of soda like they would a duty free bottle of alcohol.

A few years ago while cruising I picked up a few bottles of Coca-Cola Life six months before it was available in the states. Held my own little "Pepsi Challenge" back in the cabin between regular Mexican Coke and Coca-Cola Life.

  2. NCL is the "Rodney Dangerfield" of cruise lines.

In what way? "No respect, no respect at all" or dead?

My wife and I are cruising with my parents (both currently 61 years old) in February 2016 on the Caribbean Princess. Princess is their preferred line but they do travel on other lines occasionally. They really swear by Princess, it will be our first cruise with Princess since it's usually out of our price range.

  3. What's odd is when we booked on the Breakaway (departing 10/09/16) back in February the NCL agent I dealt with specifically said he was placing us in a cabin that would have a great view of fireworks. Very odd that he was selling us on the cabin location with a perk that was no longer being offered at the time of booking, far less eight months down the line.

  4. To piggyback off the laundry question, does anyone know what temperature water the clothes are washed in? I have always been apprehensive to use the laundry services, in fear that my cold wash items (95% of my wardrobe ends up requiring cold wash) will be washed hot, and then shrink. Any insight is greatly appreciated!

I have no idea but I'd like to assume that laundry "experts" would wash clothes at the correct temperature. Otherwise I think there would be numerous threads here about the NCL laundry ruining their clothes, vacation and entire lives due to NCL's "penny pinching" lol.

  5. Is the general consensus that the $20 laundry deal is on Wednesday?

We're leaving for NYC by car on Thursday (in October), arriving in NYC on Friday and departing on the Breakaway on Sunday. My wife and I would like to pack lightly and use our rolling carry-on luggage instead of our large LL Bean duffel bags that we usually cruise with since we're going to have to haul them around NYC. I believe our hotel in NYC has a laundry room so we could do a bit of laundry on Saturday night (like all the cool young adults do) and then do the laundry bag deal on Wednesday. I think that would get us through okay.

    Thoughts?

  6. Going on The Spirit grand med cruise in November. Can anyone tell me if they will have the NFL games on? Would like to watch some NFL while on board.

Hoping to catch a little college and NFL action but I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Also, the US election will be taking place, surely they will have the news on that?

Why? Why? Why? I'm already trying to figure out how I can stay in Bermuda instead of coming back to the US.

  7. I avoid Margaritaville while I'm on land due to my dislike of Buffett in general so I'd be unlikely to visit them for free on a cruise, even less likely if there is a fee. We have the Drink Package included on our Breakaway cruise in October, the first week MV is open I believe, so we may get a drink but I won't eat there.

When I was a kid (teenager) I think a RC cruise we were on had a Johnny Rockets on board. I ate there a few time but I can't recall if there was a fee. I imagine if there was my Dad wouldn't have wanted me going but I thought that was a decent idea. Maybe I'm bias since I enjoyed Johnny Rockets so much as a kid and have such disdain for Buffet as an adult. I'd prefer restaurants of that class be included in the price of the cruise but I understand why they want to nickel and dime you.

In the end I wouldn't eat at MV if it was free or not. It doesn't really affect my cruising experience except for the fact that the former restaurant that I might have visited is gone.

  8. Other than Fox News, MSNBC, a European sports channel and a movie channel there was nothing else. You are not going to get to see your USA pro or college sports. Licensing fees for satellite too expensive.

Not that I'll lose too much sleep over it but it sounds like NCL is pretty far behind some of the other lines as far as TV offerings. With that said, I'm not sure if that's actually a bad thing. If you're spending that much time in your room watching TV why are you cruising anyway?

If you can't get it in the room, you can't get it in the bar. I don't know about college, but they had NFL games. I would imagine they would have college games, but it would be at the mercy of what is fed to the ship. You'll probably get a game, but not necessarily the game you want.

Both Carnival and RC offered local channels out of Florida (even when we departed from San Juan). I've watched a bit of college football in my cabin and in the "sports bar" on board, again Carnival and RC. I'm somewhat surprised to hear that NCL doesn't have a similar arrangement but I guess I'll have to be patient and see what's offered on board when we get there.

Hopefully the Buckeyes will take care of the Badgers and I'll be able to enjoy it on the DVR when I get home.

  9. Good write up. My wife and I are sailing on the Breakaway in 40 days.

Not that we watch a ton of TV while cruising do you recall the channel lineup on the Breakaway? I like watching TV before bed and we're also going to be gone during the middle of the college football season. I'm a little "worried" about missing a specific game. If we can't watch it in the room hopefully one of the bars will carry it.

  10. When reading reviews I always take a couple things into account.

    1. How many other reviews has this person written? If the review your reading is their only review you may want to discount it somewhat if not entirely. Look for reviews from cruisers that have written multiple reviews. You may not agree with everything they write but it shows they have some perspective about cruising in general.

    2. Is it a one star or five star review? Way too many people speak in hyperbole. Many one star reviews focus in one aspect of their cruise that ruined the entire experience. Conversely, far too many five star reviews remind me of asking a child what their favorite movie is... usually the last one they saw because, "it's the best thing ever!" Stick to reading the two, three and four star reviews; you're much more likely to get a realistic opinion.
