Crazy? Really? I'd say 99% of people who book a cruise don't give a seconds thought as to which sport will be shown.
I say this as a sports fan. On The Escape last year they switched off the Wimbledon Tennis final after 3/4 of the match, I simply ordered another cocktail and got in the hot tub.
Then they failed to show the European Championship final (the 3rd biggest match in world football). I laughed it off and got drunk with a few Ozzie blokes who had turned up to watch it too.

Yes, to me it's crazy. Maybe only 40 people on a cruise ship during Thanksgiving week care about football.. I'd think the percentage would be much higher.. either way, I didn't realize this before I booked the cruise.
So now I just need to make up my mind on what we will do.
I'm not offended by people who don't care about football..not sure why people here are getting so upset about the people who do.
Hope you're having a wonderful weekend! :)

If college football atters, then don't cruise between September 1 and January 7th. Simple solution.
Not exactly true, some lines do show the games. I posted a thread asking where I can watch it with a child, not even realizing that the games wouldn't be on at all.
I'm now trying to decided if we are going to flip flop our weeks..we are cruising the week of Thanksgiving and Disney World the week after.

This is obviously important to you, but it's highly doubtful that it is to many others. These posts show up periodically and often devolve into arguments about how stupid soccer is and how boring it is. Probably best to plan your cruise schedule around your football-watching requirements.

I happen to like soccer. Didn't realize that there was a rule about not posting on a 6 month old thread - one that is talking about the same weekend I am concerned with.
The games are shown on DCL that weekend, so this was a bit of a shock to me.
Last year I traveled the same weekend.. more than a "few people" traveling also cared about the game. It was a great day.

I just posted a thread about the same weekend for 2017. I'm specifically interested in the OSU vs Michigan game.
Was told the game won't be shown, so googled the subject to see other comments, and this thread came up.
Crazy that they don't show the games.

We were on the Epic last December when all of the conference championship games were played. None of them were shown. They did show a couple of NFL games on Sunday afternoon as well as all of the NFL night games that week

I have never seen a non-bowl college game on a ship, and even not most of them. The sat providers typically don't make deals with the conferences for content, too expensive. Unless ESPN Intl carries it, that would most likely be a no.Plus, with the sheer number of college games it becomes very hard to please everybody, you start getting the 'why didn't you show MY team' to guest services.
Thank you. That's exactly what I needed to know.
Thank you for this!

I guess my dry humor went over the head of many! I'll try to make it more obvious in the future. :)
As far as the title I was thinking he wanted a place to play football on board with his kid, after all they do have a place for basketball so...
Ha ha. I knew it was sarcasm. No worries :)

This may just be the strangest thread title ever. :DI agree' date=' I had to click on it just to see. Thought they might throw the child around instead of a football. :D[/quote']
Lol. Sorry.
There were many, many people upset. The game was in Miami that year and we embarked in Miami. Most people assumed they'd show the game in the sports bar, but they didn't carry it. We learned that if there is something important to us, we need to check to see if it's available to watch on board or change our plans. You can always check scores on the internet, but not the same thing I know.I'm sure!! So sorry that happened to you.
Last year I talked to a few Disney World reps and the resort we were staying at before we arrived. The hotel couldn't guarantee that the game would be shown at the pool bars..so we rented a cabana 3 months in advance, to make sure we would be able to watch the game. Turns out, they did show it at the bar..but I'm still glad we had our own space just in case the crowd wanted to change it.
It might sound odd to some, but we love our sports, and take that into consideration when traveling.
We were on the Escape Thanksgiving week 2015 and they showed all 3 games on the jumbo screen at the pool with audio thru the speakers on Thursday. Great way to spend the holiday [emoji4].Sent from my iPhone using Forums
What about on Saturday? Did they show the NCAA games anywhere?
On that cruise they are likely to have ESPN International/Satellite , which is a very different channel than US ESPN.Live sports are typically purchased separately from the broadcast channels as well, and for that to happen the satellite carrier has to license them.
It's likely they will have one or two of the NFL games, but which ones who knows. College football is far less likely unless the satellite carrier already has it.
The key here is NEVER depend on a specific event being available on any given cruise.
This is what I'm wondering. I called NCL and they sounded surprised at my question.
Has anyone watched a NCAA game on a NCL cruise?

Kind of fitting hat someone who likes kickball would also like college football. The two lamest non-sports on the planet. :D
Not everyone can have good taste in sports.. best of luck with your preferred form of entertainment;)
O'Sheehan'sThat sucks. We watched the World Series on the Escape Transatlantic the year before. We also watched our favorite team play Monday night football that same cruise.

Thank you!
No guarantee of exactly which games NCL will show, but they definitely do have football games during the season shown on TVs throughout the ship. You'll be able to watch in your cabin but some of the bigger games are shown on the big screen in the Atrium. Check your Freestyle for what/when/where.Tracy
I was so upset after reading the posts yesterday.. so glad to read this info today!

We're on the Getaway that week too. We've taken cruises over the Thanksgiving week for since the early 2000's. The past few years with NCL. If it's NFL football you're referring to you can expect to see Sunday & Monday night games and Thanksgiving Day games.
We have never missed NFL football during the week of Thanksgiving on Disney, Royal, Princess, Carnival or NCL and except to enjoy the games this year on the Getaway.
College football.. but this is positive news!

And don't count on watching the World Series either, even out of NYC or in the Caribbean. Last year on Gem out of San Juan there were no games, evidently NCL not willing to pay the premium required to show it on tv
Wow. Are they not even available on the tvs in the cabin?
-
Note that their games are limited to those carried by their satellite provider. It's unlikely any non-playoff NFL or College games will be an option on the European carriers or at least not at a price NCL will be willing to pay. If they do carry some, they will pick 1 or 2 of the weeks offerings max.
NCL doesn't have ESPN?

Your chances are slim to none. We sailed twice last year during football season. All the screens were tuned to European soccer, or discussions of European soccer, or replays of European soccer (see a pattern here?)

Lol. I love soccer, but not when OSU football is on.

We sailed during the Superbowl a few years ago. Not only did they not show it anywhere, it wasn't even available on their television channels. If you really, really care about watching something, either record it and watch it when you get home or change your cruise. Don't count on their showing the game. :(
Wow! That's unbelievable!!!! Was there a lot of upset people as a result?
Maybe I should have stuck with DCL that week.lol
Ugh, this is bad news. I planned an entire day at Disney World around that game last year. I have never missed it.
Our cruise is Thanksgiving week, but the following week we will be in WDW, so won't even be home til 12/3.. recording it wouldn't help at that point. No way I could go that long without knowing the outcome.

Our favorite team has their biggest game of the year on 11/25. Is there an appropriate place where my 7 year old can watch it with me?

All of my cruises have been memorable in their own way but this one sticks out. On a whim, I called NCL CAS to see if I could get a free one night cruise on the NCL Gem on December 21, 2007. They offered my DW and I and inside cabin for free with port charges of about $99.00. We had heard how fun and crazy those one nighters can be out of NYC and since we both worked in the city we could just grab a cab over after work and be on the ship for a fun night on the seas. So now the plot thickens!! We get to check in and the agent at the desk says they have given my cabin away. All of this even after I paid and had a confirmation. After about a half hour of complaining and negotiating a manager from NCL approached and apologized and said the best they could do was give us another cabin and it would be at no additional charge. I said fine and was just happy to get on board. They handed us our room keys and told us we would be in a forward facing penthouse suite and they we sorry for the inconvenience. Hell Yeah I'll take that!!!!!!!!!! So we skip on board or was it floating, over the luck we just had and we notice signs posted all over for AMEX card holders that this was a special cruise sponsored by AMEX for its priviledged card holders???????????? Well, as it turns out tonight's Celebrity chef cooking for this cruise is none other than Bobby Flay!!!! WOW this is gonna be great!! OK so we continue to our cabin and OMG it is amazing? Our first time in a suite. On the bed is a special booklet for tonight's activities with two VIP tickets to tonight's concert. HUH????? Well, as I read further tonight's special guest performance was by Grammy Award winning performed John Legend. This can't be true??? All I can say is that besides the fantastic meal prepared by Bobby and the NCL chefs as well as the unbelievable performance by John Legend in such a small private theater it was hands down one of the best cruises anyone will ever imagine and surely my DW and I will never forget as we got to meet both of the celebrities on board and chat with them. They were both so nice and down to earth and Bobby even gave us one of his signed books for free.
I smiled thru this entire post. How wonderful for you!!!

I have a comped balcony-I bid on a few haven rooms.
I paid a $200 per person fee to upgrade from comped balcony to a B1- not included in my comps.
If I bid on a Haven cabin, then is my price the $400+$bid for the cabin? Or will the bid replace the $400?

Yes, you are allowed to bid and upgrade CAS reservations.
If you bid, you pay double as a solo.
If you do your upgrade through CAS, you pay 1x the upgrade price.
Ok thanks!

As I noted in my post above, I've done UPSELLS from my solo CAS comp many times. The per person "bid" is doubled.
This is not the same thing as UPGRADING via CAS.
For example, on my recent March cruise, I called CAS for a price to upgrade to a suite from my mini-suite comp. I was given an UPGRADE price of $3000. However, a few days later I was given an offer from NCL (NOT from CAS) to UPSELL to the same suite for $750 per person. I accepted the offer and was charged $1500.
Much better deal than CAS! :)
Wow that's great! So did you call NCL, or did you receive a call?

I paid a flat fee to upgrade to an aft balcony from my comped balcony room.. are CAS cruisers allowed to bid for an upgrade to a suite? Has anyone been successful in doing so?

The balcony cabins that sleep 4 have two twin beds, a sofa, an a bed that comes down from the ceiling. You can find these cabins on NCLs deck plans.

I'm in an aft balcony on the Getaway.. will my cabin have one? I didn't see it listed.

From one Disneygirl to another... we are doing the Epic in November. We will be in Epcot one day prior to the trip bc of the proximity to Orlando(and it's our happy place). We have done the Getaway twice and our kids and our friends kids loved it..we just wanted to try a different ship and this itinerary worked for us as we have done the one the Getaway is doing that week. I don't think you can go wrong with either. Our kids are excited about the "toilet bowl" slide but sad there is no ropes course. But there is plenty to keep them busy so I wouldn't stress if he goes to the kids club he will meet other kids and have a blast!!;)
Thanks everyone for your input! I went ahead and switched to the Getaway. I just think there are more activities for us to do together on that ship. I'll just have to make the drive to Orlando from Miami afterwards.
I'll probably just buy one way tickets to Fort Lauderdale and then one way tickets back from MCO. I'll figure out how to make it work!

Itinerary is-
Epic- Great Stirrup Cay
Tortola
St. Thomas.
Getaway-
Roatan
Harvest Caye
Cozumel
Costa Maya
I have not been to any of NCL's private islands.. is one "better" than the other?

There's only 3 Port days on the Epic, 4 on the Getaway.. so I just want to be sure that there is enough for myself and a 7 year old to do with an extra Sea day

I have been on both ships and Epic wins hands down in my book. Its not even a close comparison. But Getaway offers good things too. You mentioned the water slide on Epic. The water park on Getaway is far superior to Epic. That is one of the few areas where I think the Getaway is better. The waterpark on Getaway has some amazing fast slides and 2 vertical drop slides that are pretty intense. So if water parks are important to your kids than think about Getaway. Here is why I think Epic is a better ship.
I sailed in the Haven on both ships. The Haven on Epic is so superior to Getaway that is not even worth describing the differences and you may not be sailing in the Haven.
The Epic has a bigger and better spa. Not even a fair comparison.
The Epic has better and bigger areas: Spice H20 has tiered seating and a real swimming pool. Epic has a huge and funky nightclub. Getaway has a very tiny small nightclub that is really an afterthought. I even think the Epic theater is better.
The Epic has a HUGE gym that still may be the largest at sea. The gym on Getaway is not that great.
The Getaway has an awesome waterfront boardwalk that goes around the ship. That is a very nice feature but not enough to sway my decision.
IMPORTANT: Both ships are very similar in so many ways. That was one tiny disappointment with Getaway. It was so similar to Epic and I was preparing for something completely different. I also liked the bigger and full restaurants on Epic. The Asian restaurant is a full restaurant and not just a bar type restaurant.
If I lived in Orlando I would save the money and have the easy commute. The Epic has a great waterpark, its just not as impressive as Getaway. Some hate Epic for its lack of water views. This does not bother me. The Garden Café is better on Epic too. They put the Café in the front of the ship with amazing views.
You will have a great time on either ship. Please keep us posted and come back with a review.
Thank you for this comparison!
I do not live in Orlando, I actually live in Cincinnati.. but Port Canaveral is closer to Disney World and we are doing 5 nights there as well.
We will be in an aft balcony, not the Haven.
The waterpark and ropes course is making me lean towards the Getaway... however, the convenience of Port Canaveral to Orlando, along with your review, are making me think that I should stay put!

Bizarre that people watch big football games while on vacation? In my experience there are a lot of vacationers who do this. It's always a fun time.. wearing your teams gear, high fiving strangers.. just good fun.
I guess I'm just shocked that other people are shocked by the fact that big football weekends are a big deal to some.lol. I didn't realize it was unheard of.
