I know this was written in 2015, but am hoping maybe you will see this..

Could you please share with me if you can get to the Fort in San Juan via wheelchair? I know there are some steps and gravel and uneven grass land, but just wondering if you can get to it to at least see it? Is it doable to go through Old Town as well with a wheelchair? I am trying to decide if we want to include San Juan for a port on our next cruise. My daughter is in a custom wheelchair, manual mode so I push her. We can't get through a lot, but just can't figure out this port. I have seen pics of the fort and the grounds look doable (just not the stairs). Oh and is the trolley w/c accessible there?

Thank you so much. Happy Cruising!

We went to the fort you see on the way into the port (I forget the name) the trolleys are handicapped accessible but we waited for a while and they were all too full. You can push to the fort, San Juan is hilly so they way up is a struggle, best way is to head to the Red Door in the wall and go thru it an keep left all the way up to the fort. Most of the fort you can get around but there are some really steep ramps, Greats views. In town on the way back there are some nice shops but beware of where the curb cut-outs are and if not they are extremely high, I bet 10-12 inches in some spots and they sidewalks can narrow and they place street sign posts so half way down and you cannot pass by.... Good Luck

Sounds like you spend winters in Florida?    (New Jersey location?)      You have some additional limits you have placed.    3 ports ARE common for 7 day Caribbean cruises out of Florida.   There are many other locations   and longer cruises to also select.  With your claim-  I'd suggest you be a LOT more open to other Cruise lines.    There are some excellent 4 port itineraries on Carnival.   And before you dismiss other lines,  due to what YOU'VE assumed,   you might want to consider looking further.   I find far more similarities than differences between the lines.

Thanks, I stick to what I know, and I know what I  have tried and what works, nothing worse than going on a vacation and being confined or peoples definition of handicapped accessible. Yes I have gone out of NYC, but one to many times getting our butts kicked off Cape Hatteras, so we switched to driving to Florida. Done Bermuda, western and the eastern a few times. Just looking for different ports to be added in and not being stuck on the ship for days. Looked into Celebrity, Carnival but the reviews are not that good for a HC person. Just take a look to see what HC rooms are available and their location. Thanks again I am done

I haven't noticed this with NCL.  Other than the long haul down from NY to the Caribbean and anything to Bermuda, I can't think of any 7-day cruises I've ever seen with fewer than 4 ports.  Examples please.

Just look out of Miami in February , pretty much all of the cruises are 3 ports

I just have looked into NCl and RCCl because I feel they are about equal

I should have added that I do not fly, i drive to all the departure ports and require a HC room which you have to book at least 12-15 months in advance and the NCl & RCCl ships have been accommodating. Tender ports do not work, so it limits my options

    Thanks fore the replys

  4. Trying to figure out my next cruise and are very disappointed with the options available

I can remember when we first started cruising you would get at least 4 ports on a 7 day cruise

Now they give you the same 3 ports on the newer ships (because they can)

Even on the 10+ day cruises you get way to many sea days  and the hours they spend on some of the islands, not even worth getting off

I have even looked at RCL and it is the same

    Not sure what to do

  5. I am a full time wheelchair user and also use a rigid chair, I had to look up the "Freewheel" I don't think I would want to increase the length of the chair with one of those and increase your turning radius, especially on a ship. I think I would be taking people out left and right

  6. Was on the Escape in February, had a rear view HC cabin, great room but as it has been said before, narrow hallways and carts in the way all the time, not to mention people leaving trays in the hallways. it is best to have some one run as a blocker. Yes the doors are automatic which is good and bad, when they close it could be at a bad time.Rooms are well laid out . I agree there nee eds to be another set of elevators to make them easier to get too. Crew are very helpful, Have a great cruise

  7. As soon as the Epic came out and with that big top hat and the wavy rooms, I said I would never book a cruise on it

But I am looking for a cruise in 2012 doing the south Caribbean and she has great itineraries, but the handicapped room s scare me

I am in a wheelchair full time and have to plan out every step of the way, I have been on the Dawn, Gem, Getaway and the Escape and all of those have worked for me. Lately I have been booking Aft rooms which are great but they book fast.

From what I tell from photos and videos it looks like the bathroom with the toilet and shower are in a separate room with the sink in the hall (WHY)

I also don't like to fly, I have done it once and it was not a pleasant experience, but I am working on that

    Any information will be helpful

I will post this on the handicapped forum, but this gets more attention

    Thanks

  8. Disembarking in NYC has always been a hassle

I too believe the ship just wants you off to start on the new batch of passengers

The color system does not work because it relies on the people to do what they are told

Come on people, this is the northeast, we breed some really rude people, if there line people will cut in or just get on the line no matter what color you have. Then comes the yelling and hand waving

That is why I cruise out of Florida now, a different atmosphere

Also I take my bags and get on line at 6:30, start disembarkation around 7:15-30 in the car at 8

  9. I priced up switching to a haven room from a aft balcony, crazy price difference.

Being that I need a handicapped room you cannot do the bidding process because you cannot be guaranteed a handicapped room and you could lose your room as it goes back into the pool. Also all of the handicapped Haven room have tiny balconies, I doubt my chair will fit, compared to a aft mini suite or regular aft balcony.

Could I afford it? that is nobodies business

I think it is funny how people lead off with how many cruises you have taken, how much money you make or spend

what a great deal you got

I like the people who have or done all that , and i will never know

    Just my opinion

  10. Though there's a Tender with roll-on capabilities permanently docked at Great Stirrup Cay , it's at the Captain's discretion if passengers using any type of mobility equipment will be allowed to board. That decision is generally based on weather and sea conditions. Additionally though in the morning conditions may be favorable to allow passengers with mobility equipment to board the Captain has advance reports for later in the day that may be of a safety concern for the return which would prohibit boarding. It varies with each cruise and the passenger won't know for certain if they'll be allowed to tender until the actual port day.

They said I could get off onto the tender (top deck) but no way to get down from there

    It was a bit disappointing

And we did not even stop at Grand Cayman due to the port was closed to tendering

So we had a few more sea days than we had planned
