  1. It goes both ways. We are currently on a cruise with a large woman on a travel scoot who parks herself in the middle of the elevator so no one else can get on. She’s giving all of us with mobility issues a bad name

Sent from my iPad using Forums

I park as far as I can against the wall, even had a few ladies sit on my lap, it's all good

  2. I do not think they need a handicapped elevator, people just need to use common sense

Being a full time wheelchair user, I have had my share of people who would not give me an inch to get by or fit

On many occasion my wife tells people waiting, that the stairs work fine and my husband would love to use the stairs

We have cruised mostly out of New York and our last cruise was out of Miami, and the people who boarded in Miami were so accommodating and some left the elevator and took the stairs so I could get on. I always tell people if I run over your foot

    it will ruin your cruise

  3. Got off the phone last night with my PCC and was trying to see if I could upgrade my room to a mini-suite, if they would budge on the price, but no. I asked him if many people were canceling due to all the changes in cruise ports and he said it has been positive response to all the changes

I for one am interested in going to new places but my original cruise had no tender ports and now I have 2

Being in a wheelchair that might mean I have 2 less ports to get off. But since they added another port on my cruise I guess it is a wash

    What are you thoughts?

  4. I have a deposit on a Cruise in January and suppose to go to St Thomas & Tortola & Nassau

I am going to closely watch these boards before I make my final payment to see where the cruises go

I have been to St Thomas and Tortola before many times and for me seeing the Palm trees and different vegetation is what I enjoy on a cruise

I do not want to go and see it all ruined, also I am a full time wheelchair user and cannot tender, so that problem could happen

An to go just to give them money, does not work for me

  5. As stated previously my complaint against Norwegian is based on previous cruises with Princess. There was no comparison in service provided. Princess has always been proactive, that's just common courtesy!,!

Being a full time wheelchair user and have been on a few NCL cruises, I have always been asked if I needed help, I only have asked for help if the ramp is a bit steep getting back on, getting off is no problem, wheelie the whole way down. The y follow me around the buffet asking if I need help.

I think if you are nice, smile and be respectful you will get help no matter where you are

  6. One of the best ways to learn is to take advise from those who know.

Not everyone knows that wine can be checked and the corkage fee paid in a much easier way than putting the wine in a suitcase and being called to retrieve it. Someone giving advise of an easier way is actually doing a good thing.

Not everyone knows that bottled water (even water purchased on the ship) cannot be brought back onto the ship. Someone stating the policy is actually helping to prevent problems and confusion in the future. Not just for the OP but for everyone reading the thread.

Not everyone knows that reservations can be made for most restaurants at dinner. Someone stating that reservations can be made, when, and how to make them, etc. is actually trying to help.

Not everyone knows that the concierge usually has VIBE passes. Haven guests who cannot take advantage of priority boarding might appreciate the information.

Why some people take that information as some form of insult....I have no idea.

Nobody is being insulted or talked down to because they don't know something. The people who are unaware (whether the OP or a lurker) should be happy to receive the correct information.

you just cant stop can you

  7. Did it ever occur to you that the information that is being provided is meant to help people avoid problems or avoid confusion on their next cruise?

Looking back I see you do this a lot

I agree that doing research before you cruise is a good idea, but the OP just gave a review, and people reply about all the things they should have known.

You live and learn, but some people all want to be teachers

  8. Pembroke Pines? That's kind of random, lol. Try staying on Hollywood Beach if you would like something interesting and walk able. Lots of options in the $200 range.

Yup, the last time I got frustrated looking at all the hotels and booked that out of the way but not far from the port

    But not much around there

i will check out the hotels suggested

    Thanks

  9. I am sailing out of Miami at the end of January and looking for a descent hotel near the port but with stuff to do around the hotel within walking distance. A quick look at Expedia has many offers but some with crazy pricing.Last year we stayed in Pembroke Pines and that cost around $220 a night. I do not need transportation as we are driving down. Breakfast included would be nice.

I could have searched the forum but I am looking for recent visits

  10. I have been on one RCL cruise and 6 with NCL and I believe they are about equal. New larger ships being better

Make sure there are no tender ports

And since transfers could be an issue getting a wheelchair accessible tour can be really expensive

You may want to look into ports that have a lot to do at the port

    Hope this helps

  11. I have been a paraplegic for 26 years and have been on 6 cruises the last one on the Getaway going to Roatan, Cost Maya,Harvest Caye and Cozumel. The ship is very accessible, I did a tour in Roatan thru Daniel Johnson , they took the chair apart and were very helpful. The other island had shops near the port. I use a manual rigid chair and I push where ever I go.

    if you have any questions

    Ask away

  12. We went with Daniel Johnson tour last February, we were joined by another couple who were docked at Mahogany Bay. We did the island tour, some of the most pot hole roads I have ever seen. our driver was awe-sum, he fit that mini van in places a Yugo would not fit, they stopped where ever we wanted.. We went to the Sloth hangout last which was cool but it does not take long and the other couple did the snorkeling so we had to drive around until they came back (did not like that) and was worried about getting to the ship on time. We made it back with 1 hr to spare. For the money you could not beat a full day tour for $30 per person

  13. I am a full time wheelchair user and have been on NCl & RCCl the most with NCL.

The ships are well laid out but they all have some spots that are hard or impossible to get to, You have to be patient with the elevators as it can be difficult to get on one. My last cruise was out of Miami (normally we go out of NYC) the people could have not been nicer as to give up their spot on the elevator to give me room. I tell them I would love to take the stairs but that would be a one way trip down. Make sure you get a HC room and you have to book early as they go fast and try to pick ports without tendering.

    Hope this helps

  14. While docked at Harvest Caye is it possible to leave this area and go to another portion of the island that isn't so touristy and has some authentic local flavor? It seems everyone posts about Harvest Caye like it's the only place to go there. Is that indeed the case?

The whole island was transformed by NCL, it was built by the cruise line for their passengers, it is a beautiful island, The only local flavor will be the people who work there. Had a great time there

  15. Was on the Getaway in February and did self disembark . They said this would start at 7:45, we got up at 5:00 got ready and were on line by 6:30 we were 15th in line, Doors opened at 7:30 and we were driving out of the terminal by 8:00. That is the way to do it, Too many people, who cut lines, disregard what color they are and think the world revolves around them. Just my 2 cents

  16. I was on the Getaway on the Feb 5 Sailing and had a totally different take on the Getaway. I saw my room steward 4-5 times a day, he was very nice and went above and beyond in helping with our needs. We ate a lot in the Garden Cafe, never had a bad meal, and the Italian restaurant, which was great and we were served in a timely manner. O Sheens a few times good food too. You need to figure out the flow of people and where to avoid at certain times, same thing for all events on the ship. This is the same for all the ships we have been on. You are not alone on the ship .

  17. It depends on where your ship docks. I was on the NCL Getaway in February and there is some shops but not much else at the port. I arranged with Daniel Johnson Sloth and Monkey hangout (check on FB) a tour of the island and a stop to see his animals. I use a manual chair and they went above and beyond to help me & my wife. They helped to disassemble my manual chair and put it in the back of a minivan and I was able to transfer to the front seat. Very reasonable priced and they would alter the tour to whatever we wanted

  18. I am a full time wheelchair user who has been on 6 cruises while in a chair. I just returned last month from the western cruise on the Getaway. Great ship but was disappointed that one deck is not accessible unless you want to find the right person to get you on a chair lift (I do not like being confined with having to ask) i agree they do not have any or little accessible excursions thru ugh the ship, or it is accessible if you can climb a few steps, which will work for some people but not someone who has not walked in 25 years. You have to figure out what works best for you and your group. In Roatan we hired a tour with Daniel Johnson which included a tour of the island and a stop at his Sloth and Monkey Hangout. They did everything possible to help me transfer and to put my chair (in pieces) in the back and you get to hug a sloth. Harvest Caye is a great island that is easy to navigate and they have beach chairs for free to use. Costa Maya is a shopping site but I found it kind of fun the same for Cozumel unless you feel adventurous and find a taxi that will accommodate you and see the island. It takes a little planning and things do go wrong, Make the best of the situation... your on vacation
