  1. One item to pack that a lot of people don't think about is a highlighter. It's nice to have one to mark the things in the daily newsletter that interest you. That's my little tip for the day. =)

  2. There is a series of books by Dana Pettrey - first book is called Submerged. It is a Christian suspense/murder series. The religion is pretty light. A friend recommended this series and I enjoyed it more then I thought I would. They take place in Alaska (fiction).

The Kindle version of first book is currently free!

  3. Just loaded up the e reader with the Kate Shugan Investigation series...thanks for the tip [emoji846]

    I hope you like them!

That sounds good. I'm going to go look for those. Thanks!

  4. Which series is that? The only ones I know of featuring Alaska are a couple of mystery series that I can't remember the author of, one featuring a woman named Kate who lives mostly in the backwoods and the other featuring a male police detective in town. (You can tell it's been a while since I've read either, they got too dark for me.)

Both of those are written by Dana Stabenow. I read the Kate Shugak series. Although, one of the most recent Kate books had Liam Campbell show up. :D

  5. when on the cruise, do you worry about leaving amore expensive tablet reader lying on a pool chair? My husband is bringing our old b&w kindle reader along for this reason.....

That's a great idea! If you're going to be away from your chair and stuff, it is definitely safer.

I'm excited because one of my favorite authors who writes a series of books based in Alaska has a new book coming out the day we sail. I already pre-ordered the Kindle book and that will be my primary cruise reading. :)

  6. As far as leaving your extra suitcase with the cruise line, yes, it's safe. They do it all the time and it's no more risky than checking a bag with an airline. That might not be comforting. Since it's not going anywhere, it's actually less risky than the airline.

If you try to get it down to just one suitcase each, you are right, layers are your friend instead of bulky items. Keep in mind that things like jeans can be worn multiple times without being washed. I don't know about HAL, but Princess has self-serve laundry, so it might be worth it to take a couple hours in the middle of the trip and do a load or two.

    Have fun!

  7. I'm sailing on the Ruby on May 6th (basically the same cruise as yours) and I'm taking mine. The pools are usually heated and I plan to swim at least a couple times. Better to take it and never use it, than not and wish you had.

  8. Great idea Joe & most of mine are in mint condition. :D

I talked to my Mom (and cruise buddy) today and mentioned that I didn't think we would get a bag on our cruise. She told me that I could have as many as I wanted from their house. My Elite parents apparently have quite a collection of the blue bags. :D

  9. Pardon me if I don't want to swim in a pool when it's 15 degrees out. /quote]

I'm sure you intended the "15 degrees" as hyperbole, but you will likely find some nice sunny days/hours in July. I don't think it will be as bad as you think. Many people enjoy the open pools on the Alaska cruises.

  10.

Would they close just the visitor center at Mendenhall or all of it? Just curious.

    .

Mendenhall is part of the National Forest Service, so it would be affected. I'm not sure yet if just the visitor center building would be closed or if no one would be able to visit at all. I couldn't get through on the phone, so I sent an email. If I get a reply, I'll share it.

  11. I just got off the phone with Park Headqjuarters, Park Staff and Offices (907) 697-2230 and the representative that I spoke with said the ships will still be able to enter the park, there just won't be any rangers going out on the ships for the interpretative talks.

Thank you! I had tried to call a bit ago and couldn't get through. We are sailing very soon, so it could be an issue for our cruise. Not having the rangers would be a disappointment, but that would be much better than not being able to sail in at all.

  12. You should have service while in port (likely not in Denali or other outlying areas). You should also check HAL's internet packages to get a good deal so you can check in often.
