  1. No need to get a taxi into Corfu town from the dock. It's an easy walk. We waited and got the bus in but walked back along the front it was an easy flat walk. On the way in the bus dropped us at the little park on the front close to the New Fort. From there you crossed the road and you join the maze of little streets full of shops. Walk through to the Liston and across the park and road is the Old Fort really worth a visit good views from the top. New fort is in a dangerous state of repair and was closed last summer when we visited the island.

  2. We have these port stops on our cruise on Discovery 2 in July this year. Marella have added smaller ports to this cruise an earlier one uses Naples instead of Salerno. We have booked the full Pompeii & Herculaneum with the ship so more expensive but as a chance to visit here swayed the whole cruise so bit the bullet. Saint Raphael is a tender stop. Normally organised excursions from the ship are first to depart the tenders are then open to independent travellers. We are having a lazy day here. We've been to Monte Carlo and St Tropez doesn't hold any interest I'm afraid so can't help with that one.

Our first cruise we did Florence and Pisa in one and saw the main sights but all from the outside. Outside the Duomo crowds build up and it was like it all day high season it will be crowded so that adds to time pressure on a visit. They do a Florence on your own that may be ok for you . I don't know how much local transport will be around in Marina Di Carrara it looks a more industrial port.

One point for you it is a very port intensive cruise. Are you on board 14 days if so only 2 sea days it can be a lot to take in so factor that in as well.

  3. We had 6533 on Discovery 2 last year......same deck plan layout. Our two teenagers had the inside room and it was good. Two singles for them....or pushed together for couples. There was a small sofa a small table dressing table and chair and a decent bathroom....apart from clingy shower curtain! They had no noise at all we had a balcony opposite them and it was a great position on the ship. Just down the hall was the coffee port and the atrium with main lifts and forward of the rooms the stairs and more lifts. Very quiet and we are back on board this year in the same rooms as they were ideal. Last year Greece and Adriatic this year Western Mediterranean for 14 days.......can't wait.

  4. I am asthmatic but have not suffered from smokers whilst on board . They have their own area and its easy for me to avoid. However vaping is something else. I really get a reaction and it brings on an attack fairly quickly. Last year whilst on a sea day a woman sat on the side of the pool vaping I was sitting two rows back and that was it. Me rolling around gasping for breath and no I'm not being dramatic asthma kills and through one very violent attack I've been close. The crew were brilliant and the on board doctor. The fellow passenger to give her some credit was mortified the her " harmless little vice" could affect others that way. I don't think a non smoking cruise would work, alcohol can be bad for your health will we see a dry/ tea total ship I don't think so. People just need to think a little more instead of me me me. My holiday.....I paid for....we are there to kick back and relax and see the world.....we are all in the same boat....pardon the pun.

  5. We tend to stick to the MDR whilst on board. Think of it as going out for a meal at home we wouldn't dream of rolling up in shorts and t shirt ........save that for KFC or the like. Football shirts are a no as well even our local pub has some dress rules. I've got 2 teenage boys who enjoy cruising and they always dress smart.

Last year my then 18 year old was not impressed with the behaviour of an older "gentleman" who kept clicking his fingers and then whistling to try to get served at the bar. He then shouted at the bar men who were really busy serving "oi over here". My son got up walked over and said as he's been told to be polite to his elders he'd just ask him to stop showing himself up and wait his turn because everyone was fed up with his attitude. Old boy must have been a bit shocked but it worked. This was on day 3 the rest of the 2 weeks he was like a church mouse.

  6. Hi...... also off in the summer and we prebooked a balcony and an inside opposite on deck 6. Teenaged sons in inside cabin. We picked cabin numbers before booking in store to check availability and paid the supplement. We also chose to pre book the seats on the plane as we have been split up on a flight before. However have never been charged for this room set up in a hotel they take it for granted that you want rooms together. Same with seats I'm booking a package so why do I have to pay to sit with my family.............last time it happened boys were 6&10......... and a 5 hour flight not fun.

  7. OP.  We are still newbies at cruising as we are off on number 4 this year. We did the Adriatic last year you will love it. We've sailed once on Crown Princess out of Southampton and Marella Discovery 1&2. Loved them all. Crown is double the size of the Discoveries but service and on board standards had no faults on either line. Get the guide books out and start planning those port visits.

  8. Hi. Discovery does not have a self service laundry. You can send a bag to be cleaned..carrier bag sized I think it was about £15. We didn't use the service however. We enjoyed the main dining room over the buffet for the evening meal but found gallery 47 a little repetitive as no real change in menu over our week on board. We did a week cruise and stay but have to say our last two cruises have been two weeks.......we love waking up somewhere new each day.

  9. From the port of Gruz to old town Pile Gate they advertise €13 for a taxi. For €50 you can hire a taxi for an hour sight seeing drive across the bridge and back and then up Mount Srd. They will then drop up at Pile Gate. For the cable car and the walls they only take Kuna or credit/ debit cards. Some stores show prices as Kuna and Euro but only take kuna. The euro is to give you a price guide.in Montenegro the official currency is Euro so no problem.

  10. We had standard balcony and an inside on our cruise and neither had a fridge. I think it would be the deluxe rooms and the suites that have them . When we did a deluxe on Dis 1 in 2016 we had a fridge. You might be able to request one if you need to keep medication but you'd have to ask Tui direct for an answer to that one.

  11. Hi we also did two weeks on D2 returned 10 Aug. Our first cruise was a week western med from Palma Majorca in 2016 we did a cruise and stay as we thought the itinerary was port intensive and would need to unwind for a week. Our hotel was AI and a good choice loads of activities/sports for our two teenage boys but they decided the ship was better and could we do two weeks on board!

Go onto their website and do a mock booking.... pick itinerary and after selecting ship detail s it will offer hotel options not all AI normally choice from self catering through half full board and up. Depends which is highest priority the itinerary or the hotel the choice really is yours.

  12. Hi. Various taxis are lined up outside right where the gang way from the ship is. No hard sell or approach we walked over and one of the drivers greeted us. They advertise the cost in Euros. €13 to Pile Gate €50 for the hour drive. He said we could pay Euro or Kuna we had changed money before leaving and got a better rate than on the ship. Cost in Kuna was about 370. Our driver was great so well worth it. We had the views without the cable car waiting.

  13. Hello...... just a little note to say thank you Dubrovniktravellady for all of your help on this thread. We have just returned and would like to say what a fantastic day we spent in Dubrovnik.

Our ship docked in Gruz and we did the taxi tour. We were driven over the bridge to a photo stop and then we travelled up Mt Srd we stopped a couple of times to see the view and I can honestly say it was breathtaking. Our driver was very good and gave lots of detail on the area. The road up and down is single track and can be a bit hairy if you meet cars or a lorry coming the opposite way. He dropped us at Pile gate and we purchased the tickets and joined the climb around the wall. Even early it was hot take lots of water and a hat but this is not to be missed.

We are looking at returning to spend a little longer as we found Croatia to be a beautiful country I can understand the desire to live here. We also visited Split and enjoyed our time there as well.
