  1. Also do you only pay upgrade on the first 2 people? (we have 2 adults and 1 child) I have no idea how any of this works.

Yup, you bid 'per person', but if you have more than two people in the cabin, only the first two are charged. Similarly, if you have less than two people per cabin, they charge you for two regardless.

Not sure why they don't just simplify things and make it a 'per cabin' charge, since that's what it is already.

Probably because smaller numbers look better.

  2. Hey folks:

My fiance and I are going on the Pearl July 16th. We're both avid climbers - reasonably good, but not great. (We climb 5.10s most of the time).

Does anybody know what the difficulty rating is for the walls? Are there going to be any that will challenge us, or are they all designed to be easy climbs? We're thinking of bringing our climbing shoes, especially if there's a challenging wall.

    Thanks!

  3. Hey folks:

Not sure if this is the right forum, since I'm not Gay or Lesbian, but I'm very very queer.

Just wondering what the mindset is of most gay and lesbians cruisers is (especially if there's queer social activities) around people who are queer, but not as visibly so.

I'm a nonbinary transperson. My partner is a homoflexible woman. I'm definitely on the femme side of things, but often get misinterpreted as male because of my athletic physique. Queer community is very important to us.

Maybe I'm overworrying, but what have your experiences with the majority of queer cruiser been? Are they open to the alphabet soup beyond LG, or is it like the forum title and do they tend to exclude those who aren't visibly and obviously gay or lesbian?

    Thanks!

  4. You are such a saint! I am on this sailing for 2018. Getting married in Juneau! One thing I can't seem to find is a recent room service menu. We are cruising a mini suite but would love to have breakfast on our balcony on Glacier Bay, even if it costs a little extra. I've seen the newer ones posted for the away class ships, but like most things, haven't heard if Pearl is still using the old ones. :D Many thanks in advance!!! Enjoy your cruise!

Are you actually getting married while on the port-of-call? That's awesome. Mazel-tov!!!

  5. Out of almost 30 cruises, I've never needed any of the above anyway and it's free coverage. If I had to "get out of a cruise ship" I assume the only reason would be for a medical emergency which we're more than covered for. Also, most of our cruises aren't over $1500pp. Not sure why I'd pay for extra coverage I don't need.

Yup, if it's not something you think you need, then it's probably not the product for you.

My parents are in their 70s. I can imagine a lot of reasons I'd need to get back to Toronto in a hurry that aren't me being sick - I like knowing I'm covered for that.

    To each their own, really.

  6. We use our TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite credit card.

It offers $1 Million medical, Trip Cancellation ($1500 pp), Trip Interruption ($5000 pp), Flight/Trip Delay ($500), Delayed/Lost Baggage ($1000), Travel Accident ($500,000) and Auto Rental Collision/Loss Damage insurance, among other perks.

We've only had to use it once in Florida and it covered a 3 hour emergency visit in Sarasota for $9,000 USD! I wouldn't leave the country for a day now without it!

Yikes! I'd definitely be getting supplemental coverage if that's all I had. My trip is definitely costing more than $1500pp, and trip interruption can easily reach into the 5 figures if you need to get out of a ship or port fast.

My coverage with Manulife (through Flight Centre) has unlimited trip interruption, $5mil medical (which really isn't that needed) and coverage for the full cost of my trip. =)

  7. Tournaments are $80 buyin with rebuys and add on. Top 3 are paid. Deals are permitted.

$100 touraments are winner take all, rebuys and add ons. If total prize pool hits $2,100 (after NCL's 25% cut)

10% rake, and 25% cut on tourneys? Yeesh. That's madness.

  8. Even though we had the UBP, we brought and paid the corkage on at least 6 bottles of wine for a 10 day cruise. The wine list on the ship doesn't "float my boat" and I'm in the industry so I get screaming discounts on awesome wines. Paying $90 in corkage fees is worth it to me to have the wines I like with dinner.

This exactly. (as an aside, what do you do in the industry? I spent about 15 years in various parts of it). Going on a seven night cruise, and thinking of bringing at least three bottles, maybe four. Some vintage champers, a Burgundy from the 90s, and probably some Napa cab. Especially if I can turn the bottles in and have them served to me anywhere on the ship, $15 bucks a bottle is a steal. I pay more than that at most restaurants.

  9. If you can't tell if you're walking toward the front or back of the ship, just look down at the carpet and look at the direction the fish are swimming.

Keep watch for the single red fish swimming upstream -- that's the rebellious fish, which also is the name of a great adult beverage on NCL!

    Which direction do they swim???

  10. Hey Folks! First time cruiser here (July 16th NCL Pearl; its our honeymoon). I'm wondering what people are generally like in the friendliness department on cruises?

I figure a cruise is kinda halfway between a long train journey and an all-inclusive resort, yes? (I've done both. If you've never taken The Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver, do it now). On the train, I quickly made a small group of 'train friends' who I still keep in touch with to this day. At all-inclusives people tend to be much more 'coupley' and stick to their own people who they came with.

What's it like on cruises (and NCL specifically)? Do people tend to stick to themselves, or is there lots of genuine interaction?
