  1. We were in that room on Oasis last spring! It was a great location. We never heard any noise from the elevators or the stairwell. And we loved being so close to the stairs and elevators. We did get confused way too many times about not being on the correct side and having to go up or down a floor, etc. By the end of the week we had it down pat! Lol

  2. FINAL THOUGHTS!

At the close of this review, I thought I’d give our final thoughts on our first cruise.

In a nutshell, it was fantastic. We had an excellent time. We really loved the whole idea of a cruise vacation—having a home base and getting a taste of a few different countries all in one vacation.

We loved the food on this vacation—dinner was truly a highlight of our day. And even if the kids were a little cranky or arguing, once we were at dinner, everyone was happy and chatting and having a grand old time. It didn’t hurt that the food was really good! Not everyone absolutely loved everything, but for the most part, it was great.

Gluten free dining was really easy for Sophie, and we were so happy about that. Not having the main dining room on port days makes it a little hard—we would have preferred that option. But the chefs in Windjammer worked very hard for her and for the most part, it worked out perfectly. Next time, we will definitely order her lunch for the next day with our head waiter on every port day, if we will be on the ship for lunch. It streamlines the whole process.

We wish the shows were better. The ice show was probably our favorite, except that it was SO LOUD. We’d bring ear plugs next time. It was so strange that it was so loud. Our favorite part of the ice show was this artist who drew pictures in sand. The sand was in a big box that he stood behind, and it was projected up on a screen behind him. It was jaw dropping. So cool. The kids would have watched him for an hour if they could. They kept asking if he was going to come back out and do more. He was amazing. Funny that their favorite part of the ice show wasn’t actually ice related, but that’s kids for ya. : ) Actually it was my favorite part too!

Our excursions were really fun, and port days were definitely our favorite. We did not love the sea days. If it was just Steve and me, we’d love every minute of everything. But the sea days got long for the kids. We both agree that we need to ditch the kids sometime! We were way more fun than them haha.

Next time, we will not schedule all our excursions through the ship. They were so crowded, and too short, and not exactly relaxing. We feel confident we can figure out an independent excursion.

Sophie’s favorite excursion was The River Tubing and Adventure Falls in Jamaica. Honestly, even though we didn’t have time at Adventure Falls, I think it was my favorite excursion too. The guys were truly hilarious and entertaining. Jack’s favorite excursion was jet skiing in Labadee. Although we all loved taking the cab into town in Cozumel. And they both loved the shopping in Jamaica. Steve loved all the excursions and can’t pick a favorite. Basically, we had a fantastic time!

Lesson learned—we do not like Spring Break cruises on big ships! We will plan differently next time.

And yes, there will be a next time! We have a cruise scheduled for February on Adventure of the Seas. We are not 100% on this, however. The kids want to go to Universal (for the first time) and Disney (again), however that vacation is more expensive than the cruise! We will decide soon.

Are we now addicted to cruising? I wouldn’t say addicted, but I would take another cruise in a heartbeat.

A big thank you to all of you for reading my review! Thank you for all the nice comments and kind words! I learned so much on cruise critic to prepare me for our first cruise, so thank you for that, too. Until next time....

  3. Steve and Jack went to the family friendly comedy show on our last night. Sophie wasn’t really interested in it, so we stayed in our cabin and watched the only thing on tv—an old rerun of Seventh Heaven! Lol Oh my goodness, there is really no option on tv on Oasis. The kids watched Dora one night before going to bed. Hilarious.

Before the comedy show. It was in Studio B. They said it was pretty good, not fantastic.

This was our view from our balcony that night. I wanted to soak in every possible second of warm ocean air that I could. I knew it was snowing at home!

At dinner, Marvalyne, our waitress, clued us in to debarkation (is that the right word?) morning. We knew we wanted to carry our own luggage off the ship. (The other option is to pack up your stuff and leave your luggage outside your room at night, the porters pick it up, then you get it when you get off the ship.) If we had let the porters get our bags, the assigned time for us to get off the ship was 10:30. Way too late for us to start our drive home from FL. So, since we were carrying our own luggage off, we had from 6:45-7:45 am to get off the ship. As naive as we were, we thought, “simple, we will head down about 7:15 or so, get right off the ship, and start driving!” Marvalyne set us straight.

She was like “You’re going to head down when? And expect to hop right off the ship? Hahahaha” She advised us to get downstairs to the Royal Promenade around 5:30! She said “Mark my words, there will be a line of people and suitcases from the Promenade through the main dining room!”

So, Steve got up at 5:15 and headed downstairs and sure enough, there were about 20 suitcases already lined up! He ran back up, got our bags, and brought them back downstairs to put them in line. You didn’t have to stay with your bags, so he came back upstairs and we got ready for the day and made sure we had everything.

    7aec0c765d712b55f2bb43e8b27923c5.jpg

Here’s how close we were to the front of the line.

    be0ac17856a08670679f3be1837cb917.jpg

Here’s the line of bags behind us. These were taken at 6 am.

When they started letting people off the ship at 6:45, it literally took minutes. It was effortless. We were in the car (we parked in the garage) by 6:50, and we drove to the nearby Publix to pick up food for the drive home. We were there by the time they opened at 7 am!

TIP! For gluten free people out there, who may have a long drive ahead of them after a cruise, this is what we did. We had snacks left over from the trip. But we picked up a loaf of GF bread, GF deli turkey (applegate farms brand) to make Sophie a couple of sandwiches for the drive. (I had brought mayo packets with me, so I already had those.) We bought water, another kind of chips she likes and some grapes and she was set. We got other food for the rest of us and made it work until dinner time. Then we stopped for dinner in Richmond, VA, and got Sophie Five Guys and we got Panera, all to go. The next day we left so early that we had granola bars in the car for breakfast and we were home in time for her to have lunch at home! (We drove a LONG way the first day—FL to Frederick MD!)

Driving isn’t our first choice because it is so far, but it’s so much cheaper, and honestly, we liked having control of when we left. We knew we could just get going, and not add on a day of “get to the airport, make the flight on time, switch flights, get the bags...” Ugh—driving 23 hours is more palatable to us than that. Lol. I know we are in the minority on that one!

  4. Thank you for everyone’s kind words—I’ve enjoyed writing this review and glad it brought something positive to each of your days.

And now on to our final Sea Day, the last day on Oasis!

I’m afraid there is not much exciting to report on these sea days. It was more of the same.

Still no return to Flow Rider for Jack, unfortunately. He adored it, but as you know, didn’t adore the line. He spent a lot of time rock climbing on this last day. He enjoyed it so much, we have been going to a local place called Rock Ventures since we’ve been home. He’s getting really good! So he was proud to take that away from the cruise with him.

Sophie and I discovered some nice chairs at the back of the ship next to the track. We all ended up there late morning just reading and hanging out. It’s a great spot.

We had a wonderful final lunch in the main dining room. The salad was a good as ever. Sophie got her customary GF shrimp risotto! She could have branched out a little, but didn’t want to. She loved that risotto. TIP! If we had ordered her lunch the night before with our head waiter, she would have had even more GF options for lunch.

We spent the afternoon just walking around the ship, soaking it all in.

Sophie’s favorite store—Kate Spade. She’s a purse and shoes girl. We are in trouble.

The Rising Tide Bar as it’s rising.

Dinner in the main dining room was bittersweet on this last night. We loved our wait staff so much. The dinner tonight, just like every night, was excellent. We really enjoyed everything we ate!

This is Marvalyne, our dear waitress. She is from Jamaica and has three kids and was able to get off the ship in Jamaica to see her family. Our assistant waiter, Clifton, was headed home for two months after the ship docked in Port Canaveral. He was so excited to see his two very young children and his wife. It was wonderful getting to know the staff’s stories. It really opened our children’s eyes—how hard people work on that ship and how much they sacrifice for their families. This vacation was a good lesson for my kids. They really got it. Seeing how some people live in these countries, the struggles they have, and how hard the staff works to give us a good vacation. Sophie felt guilty sometimes and wanted to do more, to help. She still talks about it, three weeks past our trip.

  5. After our blissful dinner at Giovanni’s and a stroll around Central Park, Sophie and I decided to go to the show Come Fly With Me. (I believe this was the name of it—sorry, the days are all blending together, and I swore I would remember what we did every day. The only days that are crystal clear are our port days!)

So, Jack wasn’t interested in any more of these shows. After the ice show, which I forgot to talk about (I’ll do a general show post later), and the diving show, he was done. Sophie agreed to come with me to Come Fly With Me.

I made reservations before the cruise, but somehow it wasn’t showing up on our reservation. So we had to wait in a line outside the theater until 10 min before the show. When we got in there, the place was almost full, but we happened to find two seats! The show was okay—I liked it more than Sophie did. They had talented aerialists and gymnasts who were impressive. It was a little boring though. We weren’t blown away. But it was fun to go out and do something.

Steve and Jack went to Rock Climbing Under the Stars. Jack LOVED this. He loved the rock climbing anyway, but doing it later at night just made it more fun for him.

    8894f335e48b1c403896e7140254eeb4.jpg

Then Steve and Jack went to a comedy/music show that was listed as family friendly.

    7d0749d3d6bae4923d9cd8f46d079eb8.jpg

It was at the comedy club. Jack was excited about the thought of a comedy show. They said it was more music than comedy, but again, they had fun just going out and doing something. There was a family friendly comedy show listed for the next night, so they were looking forward to that, too.

Tomorrow will be my post of our last sea day! (Only one more chance to get my lovely salad at lunch....)

  6. On the water 51–thank you for your kind words! Yes, we reserved shows ahead of time. For the diving show, they did scan sea pass cards as we were going in, so I guess if you didn’t have reservations you couldn’t go in until closer to show time. Although the bench seating in front of us was empty the whole show, so there would have been a place to sit without reservations. The ice show—I forgot to mention that one in my review! It was pretty full, but I think you could have found a couple of seats without reservations. The stage show, I think it was called “Come Fly With Me”? We didn’t have reservations for that one. I thought we did but our best friends Guest Services said we didn’t. I remember making the reservations, but noticed while on the trip it wasn’t listed in our itinerary on the tv. ANYWAY, Sophie and I just went to that one. We luckily got two seats together, but the theater was pretty packed. People without reservations had to wait in a line until 10 minutes before the show beforehand going in.

  7. Oh—another thing! We counted up what we had for dinner. The waiter brought us 5 appetizers, 6 dinners and 5 desserts. For four people. We had a voucher from our travel agent for a complimentary dinner for two at a specialty restaurant. So we only had to pay for the kids. So we got the bill, and it was $20! Twenty? Dollars? That’s it? He charged us only $10 for each kid, but we all ordered from the adult menu! $20 for that feast?! We were shocked, astounded, blown away. Needless to say, he got a VERY good tip.

Here is the Osso Bucco and Risotto for the table. Both were out of this world.

Then it was time for dessert. I ordered Tiramisu, my favorite. Then Jack asked “what do you recommend?” He just grabbed the dessert menu and said “I’LL SURPRISE YOU!”

He brought out a plate of two of the desserts, the chocolate cake and cannoli.

    4fade3e7efb183669b825c3f01a9c54e.jpg

Then he brought out an enormous pan of Tiramisu, like the size of a lasagna pan but with a big handle, and proceeded to scoop out huge portions onto our plates! (Not Sophie’s, of course.) I have no picture because it was so good I ate that Tiramisu in three seconds flat.

Sophie had their one gluten free dessert choice—strawberry panacotta. She loved it!

We were so full after this dinner, we sat and enjoyed some coffee and people watching for awhile. Then we walked around Central Park. Musicians had started playing music, and it was just a really perfect night.

While we were walking around, I snapped a couple pics of the kids. They did not know I was taking their pictures, so these aren’t posed or exaggerated for the camera in the least. This is how they both felt this evening:

Our fabulous dinner on Cozumel day was at Giovanni’s Table. We were worried about straying from the gluten free security of the Main Dining Room, but we didn’t need to. From the second we sat down, our waiter knew exactly what Sophie would need and took care of her like she was his daughter.

We sat outside at Giovanni’s, so the ambiance was fantastic. Just able to look around Central Park, my favorite part of the ship, was really nice. One drawback—seeing an old guy come out onto his Central Park balcony in his underwear!

Our waiter explained the entire menu to us. My husband asked him what he recommended. He said “I’ll surprise you”. I was like “Uh, hold up. There are certain things I want!” So, he surprised Steve, and Jack, Sophie and I ordered. Then he told me I was going to cry because what he was bringing Steve was better than what I ordered! He was funny and polished. Good waiter.

I don’t have pictures of all the food—I don’t know how that happened. I think because we were just in the moment, having a wonderful dinner together. I was practicing my “island time” vibe on for size.

The waiter brought So. Much. Food. He did the appetizers for Jack, Steve and me family style. We had grilled octopus, mussels and caprese salad. That octopus—my lord. It was fantastic. It’s not something I would normally eat, and something Jack wouldn’t normally even LOOK at. We devoured it. Jack also got a Caesar salad. Sophie got the GF pork belly. She let us try it. It was amazing. She was in heaven.

    7babca0e2e559f65452de7f6a19728bd.jpg

Sophie’s pork belly. Gluten free never tasted so good.

For dinner, the waiter surprised Steve with the Osso Bucco. I got linguine w clam sauce and Jack got pasta carbonara. Then he came back with two more plates and put them in the middle of the table. It was another Osso Bucco and a Mushroom Risotto, for us to share! He said to me “I didn’t want you to cry looking at your husband’s dinner, so I brought some for you, too.” Lol! Sophie got grilled prawns and potato purée. The food was out of this world. Best meal I think I’ve ever eaten, actually.

  10. Momofmab—omg I cannot believe guest services did that! The last thing we wanted was a 1:45 excursion. Which is why we chose the 11am. I’m so glad to hear someone got to enjoy Adventure Falls! But so disappointed our day turned out so rushed. If we ever end up back in Jamaica, I will figure out how to spend time at Adventure Falls!

  12. All of a sudden, we heard, “BOAT #3! TIME TO GO!” Can we pretend we aren’t boat #3 and hitch a ride on 1 or 2? It went so quickly. We wanted a couple of more hours. So we reluctantly trudged back to the catamaran.

On the way back to the port, we were inside the catamaran just chilling out, enjoying the ride.

    cf7960e8c6bee11b9994bf92d15fc369.jpg

Well, Jack was kind of enjoying it haha

The drinks started flowing again and they started playing music. We wanted to go up to the outer deck, but the kids didn’t want to. They were getting really good at cramping our middle-aged, adventurous cruising style. We went up to the outer deck without them. We were in Mexico! Opportunity is knocking, kids. Get a grip!

So we went up, took some pics....

    931ef1b1688d0262a1c38d2e44384fa6.jpg

And then the dancing started. Opportunity knocking again! We had a great time dancing with the crew:

    1e101c4c657b93c7eecae16c02ae656c.jpg

The kids pretended they didn’t know us. Steve and I had a fantastic time and made some great memories.

Once back at the pier, we went back to the boat for lunch because it was easiest for Sophie. While we were eating lunch, Steve and I told the kids that after lunch we were all going to change clothes and take a cab into town for some sightseeing and shopping. Jack groaned, and tried to pull his “I want to relax on the balcony listening to my audiobook” routine, but we weren’t having it today. We consented in Haiti, but this was our last port stop, the cruise was coming to an end, and we wanted to see more of Mexico. So that’s exactly what we did!

It was exciting leaving the port and getting out on our own. Before the cruise, I was scared at the thought of doing any type of excursion that wasn’t through the ship. I feel more confident now, and in the future, we will do some excursions on our own.

We got a cab easily right outside the port area. They are there waiting for you.

    c250cb7479db5116ae4c63d3f61ac0e4.jpg

We are in a real cab in Mexico! It’s pathetic how worldly we are not.

We had such a great time exploring the downtown area in Cozumel. We only stayed on the one main street, and we saw a little park/square area, but it was enough for us to feel like we really saw some of the area, a new place, a new perspective.

  13. Day 6 Cozumel!! Sorry for the delay in posts. Laundry, orthodontist appointments and that pesky daily occurrence called making dinner got in the way.

Cozumel Day started by docking while it was still dark, so we got an awesome first view of Mexico all lit up. It was really cool, and we almost got the kids to get out of bed to enjoy it.

    d5c1c0cd365dad0c79b1f23584153745.jpg

Our excursion started at 8 am, so we had to be on the pier by 7:45. When we were looking for our spot, I saw a huge group of people and thought “surely that can’t be for one excursion.” Well, yes it was and SURPRISE! It was for OUR excursion. There were hundreds of people on this Fury Catamaran and Beach Party excursion. Hundreds. When I had read reviews of Fury before the cruise, almost all the reviews were excellent, so I felt confident. I should have paid closer attention to the “okay” reviews that complained about the crowding on the excursion. Lesson learned. (I learned so much on just this one cruise. I guess that’s how it goes—you take a chance with stuff and don’t really know what you need to know until you actually do it. Then you learn for the next cruise!)

While we were standing in line waiting for the catamarans, a dog was brought through our line to sniff bags. I’m assuming he was looking for fruit? Or maybe just food? Not sure about that, but it was amazing to watch him. This was actually our kids’ favorite part of the excursion LOL! The dog sniffed some kind of contraband in a lady’s bag behind us. He stuck his head all the way in her bag then sat down and looked right up at his handler. She gave him a treat and they took the lady out of line and took out whatever it was she wasn’t supposed to be bringing into Mexico! When the dog sniffed everyone else’s bags he just gave them a quick sniff, like he barely acknowledged the bags, but he zeroed in on this lady’s bag big time. It was amazing. I’d like to watch that dog all day, hard at work. So would my kids!

The catamarans finally pulled up, as the group swelled. I guess the reviews that said the excursion was crowded were spot on. But we were in Mexico!! We were still excited. We filled three catamarans. Yikes. We had around 130 people on our catamaran alone.

The crew on this boat was A+. I loved these guys. I wanted to go home with them and meet their families. They were that wonderful.

We got a safety briefing on the ride to the snorkeling site. They explained what we had to do with the life preservers and snorkeling gear. We brought our own gear. Shared snorkeling gear? Yuck. I have sanitation issues.

    62ce2e134da736e1d597411ccf446ba2.jpg

Here we are on the boat with 130 of our new closest friends

Once we got to the snorkeling site, they tried to get us off the boat as orderly and efficiently as possible. They kept saying “every minute you are on this boat is a minute you are not in the water!” Oh geez, people, hurry up! I didn’t expect snorkeling to be stressful!

Once we were in the water, I understood what the reviewers meant by crowded. We spent 45 minutes that felt like 10 being kicked by people’s flippers. I also spent that time trying to keep track of my kids in a swarm of people that all looked exactly alike. It was a little chaotic. We did see a few fish, and it was really cool because snorkeling in general is really cool, and one of my favorite activities. But we were instructed to stay by the white buoy. They never said why, they just kept telling us to stay by the white buoy. So the whole time all I heard was “AMIGOS! THE BUOY! STAY NEAR THE BUOY!” But if you stayed near the buoy, you were packed in a group not able to really snorkel. It was like people soup!

They had a photographer on board who would take your photo underwater. I really wanted one of these photos. You had to be proactive to get your photo done. He wouldn’t necessarily come find you. Your group needed to be together. So I worked hard to get us together, then get his attention. I’m glad I did. It’s a cool photo.

He had fish food that he threw out to attract the fish. When you were just snorkeling, there was not this abundance of fish!

All of a sudden we heard “AMIGOS! BACK TO THE BOAT!” What?! Already?! Sigh.

On the way back in, the same photographer was up on the boat, ready to take pictures of families as they came in. Again, you had to make sure your group was together and you had to make eye contact or wave your arm to make sure he saw you. I worked hard at this! We got a good photo:

Once back on the boat, we were going to head to a beach for a beach party, apparently? The crew started handing out drinks on board. They were so nice and friendly and accommodating. They really wanted you to have a good time.

Once at the beach, we were the first catamaran there. We didn’t realize then that two more full catamarans would be coming. So we thought this would be the extent of the people on the beach. So at that point, it was fantastic. We had our choice of beach chairs, and the inflatable aqua park was empty at that point. There were cigarette butts and bottle caps, etc, in the sand, but whatever—we were in Mexico!

We swam right out to the inflatables in the water. Jack was most looking forward to this part. If I can give you one piece of advice it is this: work out at the gym regularly before you do an excursion that includes an inflatable water park. The water is deep, so you swim out to the things, then pulling yourself up on the platforms and up the rope ladders to get to the slides or the trampoline or whatever obstacle you choose is taxing. It is not easy. I work out at the gym 4-5x a week. I’m in pretty good shape. After two obstacles I was tired! Just that climbing and swimming in the ocean between obstacles—whew!

We found the inflatables to not be in great shape, lots of patching with duct tape, some holes. But that’s to be expected with the amount of use they get!

Once we did a few obstacles, the other two catamarans had pulled in and yowza it was crowded. Hundreds of people descended on the aqua park and the beach and it was like Disney World at Christmastime.

Jack stayed with the aqua park despite the crowds, but Sophie and I decided to try a kayak. We love kayaking. Love it. And ocean kayaking especially. But the area we could kayak in was pretty small. And it was within the same buoys as the aqua park (lots of staying in buoys in this excursion). So again, it wasn’t the relaxing kayaking communing with nature experience we wanted. But Sophie had fun, so I was happy. Then we grabbed a couple floating mats and floated in the sun for awhile. But again, it was in the same area as the aqua park and the kayaking, so the whole time I was floating, trying to relax, all I heard was “OH MY GOD, LEFT! LEFT! DON’T HIT THOSE PEOPLE ON THE MATS!”

We met Steve and Jack back at the chairs. Jack tried out a hammock, and we took a few pics.

Jack was posing us like the ship photographers do! So funny.

  14. After dinner we had the most beautiful night walking on the top deck.

When we got back to the room, our room steward, Michael, had left yet another towel animal. I haven’t mentioned those yet! He left one every night. It was the highlight of the day. Tonight was a mermaid.

Another night we found this guy:

This monkey was our favorite one. We imagined Michael in our room giggling to himself hanging this up. The kids and I are always making up scenarios, little stories about people, imagining what they are thinking. Everyone has a story.

Sorry there wasn’t too much action or humor today. The port days were our highlights. Tomorrow is COZUMEL, so it will be an entertaining post!

The burgers in the MDR were fantastic.

Sophie’s customary gluten free shrimp risotto.

After lunch, Jack stalked Dreamworks characters and climbed the rock wall over and over. And over.

We still don’t know the purpose of this guy, but Jack wanted a picture anyway, of course!

We discovered the Rising Tide bar today. You don’t have to order anything to ride it. We got Jack a Shirley temple just to make it more fun (we didn’t have beverage packages).

We created a monster with this discovery. It was the first of many rides....

Hmmm.....this day is seeming pretty boring! Haha. Maybe our MDR dinner will make it more fun. On this night, the chefs did a parade through the dining room. Everyone was clapping and they were dancing. It was priceless.
