    Memoak,

I totally agree with you. I think FREE is a great price. 😳

As Foghorn Leghorn once said "View total Eclipse free? That's the way I like 'em, totally free!"

You do know that you are not supposed to leave the balcony door open as it messes up the air conditioning for all the cabins near you.

In answer to the question posted by the OP, you could always tell your Mom that you have a prior engagement and are not coming.  She may not like it but her offer off an inside is hardly a reasonable offer.

    DON

Wow! I mean Wow! You think a free offer for an inside cabin is NOT a reasonable offer? Considering the remarks you've made about some of my past posts, I certainly wonder a bit about you!

My mom offered to pay for our trip in the summer of 2021.  She and my three daughters are going to share a mini suite, and my husband and I will be in an inside cabin.  I haven't been in an inside cabin in 15+ years.  I don't normally spend a lot of time in my cabin as it is, but I will miss seeing the sun.  Anyone have any helpful tips to get me more excited about an inside cabin?  I've already put in my Amazon cart those goofy porthole stickers...

I would think that considering the fact she's willing to pay for your trip, you'd show a tad more gratitude! If you don't like it, you certainly can choose to pay for your own cabin & feel free to upgrade it yourself.

  4. My spouse & I will be on the Star Princess on Jan.28 for a 15 night Hawaii cruise. We were originally booked on a Oceania cruise on the Riviera, but Richard wanted something different. Myself well, I'll miss the great food & ambience, but oh well! Wondering if anyone else is on that cruise. If you've been on this ship any details would be great. We did one Princess trip on the Regal in 2016. The first week was really trashy due to Super bowl Week.

Never saw so many drunk pax! The second week, most of these pax were gone & the second leg(Back to back cruise)were what I normally see on a cruise.

Is anyone going on this 12 day cruise on the Riviera?

    Jim & Terry

Well, we were! Until... my spouse Richard got an e-mail promotion from Princess. So now we're going to Hawaii Jan.28 for a 15 day cruise. Personally, I've really loved the Riviera & it's food. You will note that the pax are really quite elderly compared to any we've seen on other lines, but the food & ambience I love. I told Richard if the food was not good to ***** at the mirror! The LGBT meetings are pretty few & far between. Setting it for 7:30 last Jan. was totally dumb, as we all were at dinner. There were a fair amount of gay pax, but unlike the year before(2018)most were pretty low key & kept to themselves. We're all pretty easy to "spot", so you'll have no trouble there. We plan to be back on Riviera in 2021, even if I have to stuff Richard in the suitcase LOL!

Good reasons, Essiesmom ... but as I said before, I don't think anyone would blink if you wore them to a dining venue earlier in the day or Terrace at night.

Lots of women wear slacks of various kinds to the main evening dining venues with a sparkly top or just an ordinarily "nice" top. Some wear pants suits, even today.  (Lots of political ladies wear them even now I have noticed.)  I have long skirts and palazzo pants that I typically wear in a dining venue with a nice but not sparkly top.  I've never been sent home to change.

    Mura

I certainly hope you're not sent home. That's a LONG trip back to the ship LOL!

Sorry to hear you did not "enjoy" the desserts on Princess. Once in a while, when their pistachio bavarois come out in their buffet restaurant, it is quite nice, but I would agree with you the quality of the desserts are nothing compared to Oceania.

If desserts and pastries are important to you, apart from Oceania, Viking Ocean Cruises do sometimes have good quality desserts and pastries.

They have a eatery called Mamsens, their Suksessterte (success cake) Fyrstekake (prince's cake) and waffles, are quite amazing....dare I say , the quality is comparable to those yummy things you find for afternoon tea on Oceania.

For me, Oceania especially on the Riviera and Marina , they have the best specialty restaurants. The cuisine in the speciality restaurants on Viking Ocean, in our view, were not as enjoyable as those on Oceania.

Really enjoyed the Riviera. I pretty much think we'll be back next year.

In April, my Husband and I will be cruising on the Regatta in the South Pacific .  My Sister will be joining us with her daughter and two grandchildren, aged 8 and 10.  They are extremely well behaved (but still kiddos) so I'm not worried about their manners in the dining rooms or shows.  My question is whether you think they will be bored silly?  We plan to bring plenty of activities & games for the sea days and i know they will enjoy the ports and beaches.  I'm assuming they will be the only youngsters aboard.

Though the line does not really cater much for kids..this will be YOUR job! It will be up to you to keep them entertained. In some cases the line may restrict children of a certain age from cruising, so be sure you check this out thoroughly.

We have been on Oceania several times, and Princess once. Sure, the cuisine on Oceania may be somewhat better, but our Princess cruise was not so bad. We remembered, the quality of the food improved towards the end of the cruise. That was quite curious. In the buffet,  the cruise ship buffet had mountain-loads of smoked salmon (dare we say, it was better than in Oceania, where the smoked salmon sometimes looked as if they had been in the fridge/freezer for too long and looked a bit "discoloured" and did not taste that fresh - we had to ask them to be changed) and huge amounts of Super-Duper KIng sized prawns  The only thing which we found strange on Princess (Regal Princess) was the poor quality of their pastry - both for savoury and sweet dishes - they tasted like cardboard! The cakes, pastries and desserts on Oceania were definitely superior, but then, we did not pile on so many calories on Princess as we did on Oceania !!!  Dare we say, we found the shows on our Princess cruise was actually BETTER than on any of our Oceania cruises.

So, there are many things which Oceania does better , or very well, but Princess is not that bad. You will enjoy the cruise. Besides, your hubby will be happy because the $$$$ money he would have saved on a Princess cruise!!!

PS: We have been on  8 cruise lines/companies. On almost every cruise with different cruise lines, they were of varying degrees of quality, but we never actually starved or felt the food wanting. The only exception perhaps was on the P&O Ventura, when one of us actually LOST WEIGHT after the cruise because the food was that poor. (These days, whenever we read on the CruiseCritics.com board under P&O and someone described themselves as "foodies", it made us grinned !!!)

We're doing a Club Balcony. So we're really saving very little money. The pastry/desserts on Princess is bought from the likes from Sysco/US Foods. We thought the desserts to be really poor on Princess, exception were the Norman Love desserts. He forced them to use decent ingredients, in order for his name to be attached.

    A fire would be scary!

The OP, started this thread titled "UNFORTUNATE SWITCH TO PRINCESS", in the OCEANIA FORUM, and that is why members are discussing the 3 sister Princess ships: STAR, GRAND & GOLDEN.

Yeah. What happened? I started it as a lament of having to switch to Princess(my spouse's choice)I totally know the differences between the lines. A cruise is what you make of it, but overall I know the Star will in no way come close to the ambience & style of the Riviera. There's always the next time, however!

Why get an Oceania Cruise Connoisseur agent to book your cruise for you?

    https://www.oceaniacruises.com/find-agent/

In all probability you'll get free gratuities and/or OBC. And have someone to negotiate for you for upsells if you decide later to get one. There are so many benefits to having an O TA working for you.

    Call Monday if you're interested.

    You'll LOVE Oceania btw.

We did that on our first O trip. It worked fine, but did it with our TA the second trip & he found a fair amount of "perks" that were not offered by the O agent. We prefer to use our TA from now on.

My friend just texted me from Copenhagen she forgot her meds here at home..anybody have a great idea how she can replace them..I checked and in Denmark you need a prescription

    unlike Spain

Obviously the number one thing NOT to forget! If she's cruising her Dr. can fax the ship's medical facility the info. they need to refill the scripts. If she's traveling independently of a cruise, basically the same thing can be done.

One should always remove their hat when dining anyway, even if you're at a McDonald's....   It's just common courtesy.

Oh I wear it in Micky D's. Have to keep the flies of some how. Normally that would be a joke, but a few times it was the case!

How many formal nights on a 10 day cruise?

What percentage of people dress formal?

About 3 formal nights. We only wore tuxes on Cunard. On Oceania, we wore sport coats & no ties. We'll bring a few ties & perhaps a vest or 2 on our Hawaiian trip.

just another biased thread on what to wear ... hopefully this one too will be deleted as ab-so-lute-ly nothing new will come out of this ... only the same ole tired answers by the same posters with their same agendas as to what they want to see on THEIR cruise ... sorry

Yup & yours is one of the oldest!

Yep!  Due to the botched refurb, we didn’t have a full stage show on the Coral until late in the second week of the cruise.  The other beautiful club/show room at the stern was hardly used at all at night.  We’ve cruised on other small upscale ships (Azamara, Regent) with limited entertainment, so we’ll set our expectations appropriately. 😀

If you like a truly relaxing cruise, I think you'll be most pleased. I'm basing this on our experiences on the Riviera. I really can't comment on the smaller ships, as we've not been on those. Frequently, if we have a great experience on a ship, we'll stick with that ship for a while. Pretty much why we did the QM2 for 6 cruises.

We did one cruise on Princess, the Coral through the Panama Canal.  Got a great deal, but would agree a standard balcony is worth no more than $75-100 pp/pn.  Beautifully designed ship, but in bad shape after a major dry dock (much rehab not completed...continued during the cruise with many contract workers).  Food not memorable, but great staff in all cases.  Not as a refined experience as compared to HAL or Cunard.  Looking forward to our first Oceania Cruises in February.

Obviously you notice the price difference. You'll see that in the food quality. We've been on the Riviera. Entertainment's not so hot. I think because the budget goes to food quality.

over the top , perhaps an old fashion word

think, going to dinner on a viking ship wearing an old fashion smoking jacket, tux pants, silk slippers and a silk top hat

folks loved it as they did him and when they found out he could really sing  he was being invited to parties all over the US when we got home

Sorry for the late response! Sounds like he's a lot of fun to be around.

It is nice that on Oceania  you can dress nicely or  in ballgowns/Tuxes  it you want 😎

Seen a few gowns, but only one night did I see a tux. Never saw any tuxes after that.

The Star Princess cannot be compared to one of the newer ships (Regal/Royal 2013-I believe). I will not sail on her again. I often take an aft balcony and this past Feb. found it much noisier back there. Another thing are the problems with the toilets last cruise. The cabin steward did an excellent job, however in the MDR, we were not happy with the service. Sabatini's was excellent, however, the Crown Grill was not this time. We ran in to restaurant staff who were there to socialize with each other. Passenger service was the worse I've ever seen.

Now, it was one of my fav cruises because we did get to the Falkland Islands to see the penguins.

You sure you were on Star Princess?? There is no Crown Grill. It's called Sterling Steak house.

  21. We did 1 cruise on Princess in 2016 on the Regal. A very nice ship. The food was quite good. The buffet was the best we ever saw on any ship. The trip was a 14 day B2B. The first week was Superbowl week & I hate to say, but it was a trailer trash jamboree that first week. tons of drunken ill behaved pax mixed with regular pax. Formal nights were very interesting that first week. The second week about 80% of the pax changed & it was much nicer! We're fine with the formal nights. We usually brought sport coats on the Riviera. We'll do that on the Star, along with a few ties. Pricewise our Star trip is only about $500 less overall.

We are foodies & I've explained to Richard the food will be decent, but not to expect the quality of even the Regal. We will try the Chef's dinner & perhaps the ?? Ultimate balcony dinner?(not sure that's the correct name) The ambience of that should be nice. It's true, a cruise is what you make of it. Personally, I intend to make full use of the Sanctuary on sea days. I really enjoyed them on the Regal.

In the evening I wear Dockers or something similar and a collared shirt, usually a camp shirt / madras or something similar, always short sleeves.  A pair of casual loafers and I'm all set.  For formal nights I swap out the short sleeve for long and call it good enough.

For lunch it's nearly always a polo / shorts / reef sandals.  That's my daytime basic attire whether at home or on ship.

I've only run afoul of the dining room police once, when I wore a ball cap in for lunch and was asked to remove it.  I'm not sure the windblown mop I exposed by doing so was any sort of upgrade, but I complied without complaint nonetheless.

Oh, and I've been told repeatedly that shorts are permitted (not encouraged but permitted) first night / last night to accommodate those who may not have received their luggage / have already packed their luggage. I'll be testing this myself in a couple weeks on Royal. . .

Yeah, do leave the ball cap in the room. Looks crappy when dining out, or at least remove it once you're inside.
