  1. Question,

Did you have any additional health screening due to the Coronavirus?

When I checked my cruise manger last night it had a window saying additional health screening would be done before boarding. Also if you had traveled from or through mainland China in the last 14 days prior to arriving at the port you would not be allowed to board the ship. Some exceptions to the travel ban where also noted.  You had to acknowledge reading the info before you could go to your cruise information.

DD and I will be boarding this ship on the 6th.

  2. Not sure if they are allowed.

We just hang a few car air fresheners in the cabin. One in the restroom and the other in the main cabin area. Nothing to plug in and easy to pack.

Powerful 7.7 earthquake strikes in Caribbean between Cuba and Jamaica

    DOYLE RICE | USA TODAY
    Updated 18 minutes ago

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake has been reported in the Caribbean Sea between Jamaica and Cuba, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The center of the quake was located about 73 miles northwest of Lucea, Jamaica. It was about 6 miles deep.

It’s not immediately clear if there is any damage or injuries. However, the earthquake caused very strong to severe shaking in portions of far western Jamaica, capable of moderate to heavy damage, the USGS said.

It also said moderate shaking was felt on Grand Cayman Island, while light shaking was reported on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

The quake was also felt as far away as south Florida, according to posts on social media. Buildings were being evacuated in Miami due to the quake.

This is the fourth magnitude 7 or greater quake in the Caribbean since 2000, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Jesse Ferrell.

The quake appears to be on a fault boundary between the North American and Caribbean plates, according to seismologist Lucy Jones.

  4. Thank you for the information.  I know that the cruise is a time to relax but the DW will have an more enjoyable time knowing that she may be able to watch awards at the MUTS or in the cabin. I know for some the awards are not their thing. I'm in that boat with them.

  5. The DW is a big time movie buff and enjoys watching the Academy Awards broadcast very much. We will be on the return leg of our cruise on Sunday 02/09/20 (West Coast Getaway on the Royal) when this will be broadcast. I wanted to ask everyone in the peanut gallery if this could be seen on one of the channels of the cabin TV? ABC will have the awards ceremony this year. I know that I will be setting up the DVR to record this and the preshow before we leave home for the cruise. Just trying to get an idea of what plans I need to make for the evening.

  6. Sad to hear about the wind issues. The DW and I were on this same cruise last year and it rained all day while anchored  off of Monterey. We didn't go ashore but spent a good part of the day in the steam rooms and lounging around the ship. A small downer for my birthday but the rest of that cruise was great.  Enjoy San Diego.

  7. "And sometimes the cigar smokers complain there is hardly any room for them because of the number of cigarette smokers in there."

When I did my post cruise questioner with Princess that was my only complaint I wrote about with the cigarette smokers in the Cigar lounge. (nothing against them but they have more areas to light up)

Sometimes I would have one of my smaller cigars in the smoking area on the starboard side at the back on the Promenade deck 7. This is out side the Vista Lounge. Never had anyone say anything including the many crew members who came out to have a smoke.

  8. I will be having my first anniversary on July 1st being retired.

I was a Fleet Maintenance Supervisor/Certified Fire Equipment Mechanic for 36 + years when I was informed that the shop operations are to be contracted out and the shop rented to the contractor (who has a lousy track record for doing repairs correctly). They wanted me to oversee the contactor (baby sit) and put my mechanics in other job assignments.

I gave a six week notice a few days later and took four weeks off because I had to much time saved on the books (use it of lose it) and only came back for the last three days. Just enough time to clear my office and computer.

Since retiring I have done three cruises, two with the DW and one solo.

Being I have kept my Fire Equipment Mechanic certificate current I do plan on going back to work as a P/T mechanic, but on my terms.

  9. We has always brought our own body soap, shampoo, and conditioner. This includes the one time we did a suite. Never did like them when I used them.

As for the little round bar of hand soap that seems to have a mind of its own after gets wet. We replace it with a small bottle of foaming pump soap ($1 at Walmart). Easy to use and no mess. I inform the cabin steward that we wont need any replacments.

  10. We just did a cruise on the Ruby 3/10/18 - 3/17/18 and they did not have any BOGO happy hour. Didn't matter being we had the "Sip and Sail". I did hear a few people on our Roll Call group complain about it when we got together.

  11. This could also be the start of not allowing you to bring any drinks when boarding? No water, soda, juices, etc. like some of the other cruise lines? You have to purchase the PBP, S&MP, or each drink by itself. Hope it is just a price change.

  12. I ordered and paid for a flat of water yesterday afternoon and it shows on my onboard reservations.:D Could be they are saying that you have to order PBP now but could be a price change coming? They took the PBP off for awhile back in late Oct when they made the changes and increased the price and then brought it back on the website.

  13. We have friends in Ft. L who drive us to port and we like to do BVE with them. I think they don't book them till 90 or 100 days out, and if you phone before that you get told there is not one on that date. As always, the reps are often unaware!

According to Princess it can be booked 120 days before sailing. I'm not sure why they said the Ruby was not doing it on the first call but now they are? Our daughter has been on one cruise with us on the Crown. Being she is driving us to the port like your friends do we wanted to do the same thing and have her along with the BVE. Makes more of an event than just dropping us off and driving home.

This is from a Princess site for travel agents:

"How do clients make a reservation?

Clients are encouraged to book through their Travel Agent or by calling 1-800-PRINCESS. Travel Agents can in turn also call 1-800-PRINCESS directly to make their reservation. Reservations for The Bon Voyage Experience are not available to be booked online at this time. The reservation fee is non-refundable and the reservation can be made beginning 120 days before the cruise and up to six days before the sailing date. Once registered, guests will be able to input their required security information through the Princess’ Cruise Personalizer."

  14. I had my TA contact Princess back in December to set up a BVE for our daughter on our up coming cruise in March. She is dropping my DW and I off at the port and wanted to see the Ruby and have lunch with us. My TA was informed by Princess that the Ruby was not going to do any BVE's on that departure date.

I had my TA check today to see if anything has changed and now she is set up to do the BVE with us. It is worth checking again being things can change.

  15. "Are the 16oz budweisers cans screw caps or the caps that need a bottle opener ?"

The 16 oz. Buds I have purchased (bucket of beers) have all required a bottle opener. They have not been screw caps. Also I have brought my own bottle opener being the one supplied by food service was worn out and just junk. I never got one that was worth using.

  16. I found the Promenade deck to be in the sun all the time unless it is blocked by the ship. It was not used much on the cruise I did back in Nov. The Horizon Terrace on deck 16 at the rear of the ship is a nice area to relax and read. It has shade and you can get a table next to the rail to look out from. I found that is was not that busy.
